Training 2022 Pre-season

Keays was the best inside mid at NEAFL level for his last two years with us. Ely hasn’t come close to that.

Wasn’t he also leading goal kicker at one point? I swear there was a season there where he absolutely tore it up as a forward.

Obviously depends on how Wilmot progresses but I might have one or two in front of him, if there was an injury.

My starting back 7 is similar, but I went for Payne as bench just over Answerth, as he is versatile enough to play on mid to tall forwards, but suspect throughout the year Answerth, Madden and Prior get games. I am confident in our fringe players that there is some opportunity for rotations depending on opposition match ups each week.
Yeah I feel like playing Payne this year would be a good investment

One of my favourite things from last pre-season was seeing Harry Sharp go from a long term prospect that would need a few years to debuting in round 1. Be interesting to see if anyone makes that sort of leap for round 1, 2022.
Fages did it with Dev too in 2020 (although maybe not as long term prospect as Sharp)
Darcy Wilmot this year?
Lohmann could be fun!

What the vibe on Tom Berry’s prospects this year?

I think Tom may be another guy who will get pushed down the pecking order this year. Unfortunate as he seems a heart and soul type guy. Has shown pace and aggression but really never looked to have the composure at senior level. Rayner comes back in and other guys on the fringe seem to have higher level skills.

I think this years list trimming is going to be tough for a couple of players; and supporters who only wish the best for all players on the list.

I think Tom is another competing for a spot on the wing.

That's what I was thinking, Tunstill could well be Ely's new housemate in which case it would be weird if he wasn't there.
According the West Australian, Kalin Lane is Tunstill's new housemate. So either Ely came because he was free when senior players were not, or he's a strong presence in the rooms, or there's some sort of plan for him.

If fit, Gardner is a certain lock in the back 6.

It was my back 6 and who I would play. Personally I would want only one of Adams or Gardner in the team. 50/50 call for me which but only one I think balances the team out better and would allow us to get the best out of Harris and he is a much bigger weapon than either of them.

How would you like to see us play to better take advantage of this? Bit more like Sydney and hit up blokes on the 45's?

We go long down the line every time I think to cover the fact that we are not fast in transition if the ball is turned over. Lyons and Neale are both issues for us defensively and when the ball is turned over holes quickly appear. Having such a narrow field helps contain this risk but really inhibits our ability to attack with speed and width.

To take better advantage of it going forward we need to spread more and then actually look to use those targets. Further when players receive the ball they need to be encouraged to play on quickly and use their legs rather than slowing it down and going back over the mark which we do a lot now.

It is not very complicated when I say it like that but if we are adding run to the team at some stage we should make actual use of it.

Our kick ins are often so predictable. And our transition out. Really hope they work on this over summer.

For this reason i hope it’s Andrews / Adams / one of Gardiner or Payne. I think Payne getting games would be great but i do think darcy at his best is very good. So my default is Gardiner. Adams’ intercept marking before injury really was exceptional.

Without Birchall we have a great chance to get some more run out of the backline. Rich and Kiddy are locks. Starcevich obviously if not in midfield. I would try him mid

I would favour Answerth as the one absolute lockdown defender.
Rich as the break the lines kicker and the one reading the play and taking uncontested marks.
Kiddy playing reasonably right but a handy kicker as well.
And i would lean towards Madden as the player told to break the lines once we get it. He is absolutely lightning fast. It would add a totally new dimension to our transition from defence and i think we are crying out for it.

I think the list will be trimmed a bit at the end of 2022. It’s unfortunate because we all want to see players develop, but this is a business of winning premierships. Sad to say, but I think Lester and Robbo will play their last season in 2022. Tom Berry May be one that is pushed out with the influx of medium sized runners. I think maybe 3 or 4 others could have pressure on them as well. With the club talking about Ashcroft, Fletcher, and McMillan next year, they are still short of the draft point for all three. I hope the club can be more ruthless in the trade period, and shop some fringe players around for the best gain. With Lachie also uncertain to stay, there may be an opportunity to amass some significant points.

Interesting......I cant see either Adams or Gardner out of the side if both fit and playing good footy. It's a proven fact that Harris plays a better style of footy when Gardner is down there with him. Even Harris has outwardly said that.

Agree with your comment re: Robbo, but Lester seems to have a knack of re-inventing himself back into the 22 season after season. In saying that, would not be surprised if Froggy stays until the end of 2023 at the very least.

Like what McStay did last year, 2022 will be the "making or breaking" for Tom Berry. Hopefully he gets his opportunity early and really gives it his best.

Tom Berry has been very low possession. I thought he showed great promise in the game against Collingwood last year. It was his pace and nimbleness that was his upside that night, and ability to get the ball on the spread. For that reason a wing or HFF role looks his best chance to me. Over the next 2 years there are 2 big roles up for grabs, Robinson and Zorko (coming off a great season but was not great in the finals, and 33 in Feb).
Deb Roberston seems set to be best 22 lock if he continues his improvement.
Ashcroft might well step in next year.
So a big year for Tom Berry to try to make his mark this year.

Pencilling in Payne to any projected back6/7 is very premature imo. Need to see quite a bit more from him before I'm in favour of him playing ahead of Adams or Gardiner. This is nothing to do with his disposal which is not much worse than either of those guys, and is entirely due to the fact that I think his one on one defending needs a lot of work.

I hope Tom has a great year, he has pace, evasive skills, and his tackling is good. He may panic/rush things sometimes but I think that's more a young bloke trying to do as much as he can to impress with limited opportunity. If he was to get a good run in the firsts or even a full competitive year in the 2's, I think we see a good player worth holding on to. It's been hard for the young blokes the last cpl of years with covid and the small amt of games they've been able to get in. Delayed development for sure. Given a cpl of more years he could certainly step into Zorks shoes.

Those that I do see on the way out at the end of the season are CEY, Robbo (retirement), and Lester. Just too many quicker younger players for Lester to compete with. I would certainly offer Froggy a vfl contract, I think his importance to the club culture and youth development is needed around the place. Fullerton is another that needs big improvement to be held on to. A big year for H Smith and he could get overtaken.

I don't think we need to turn over too many players at the end of the year if we're only looking at drafting Ashcroft and Fletcher for sure, then McMillan (I don't know much about) or a tall to round out the draft.

Should Lachie Neale play the 'go home for the missus' card again, that gives us the opportunity to play the trade game to replace or for needs or for points.

Our list is pretty good, I don't think we need to make a fistful of changes, especially with the youth that has missed games and development because of covid. I think they deserve a chance to show what they got.

Well training wasn't at Yeronga this morning unless I was too late. Here now and no sign. Oh well was only a 45 minute drive :(
Cycled past the Gabba around 9am and the Big O was at the lights heading into the Gabba, on the way home at 11.15am Clugga and I think it was Tunstill were at the lights going home, as briz said, last year Wednesday afternoons were at Yeronga, doubt it today though, too wet and the Yeronga club don't like their ground chopped up.

In my opinion i think Payne will be training with the forwards and play that role in the preseason
We are short on KPF and he could step into that role if needed but needs some time to adjust to the role
Would be fairly easy for him to go back and fit into the back six if needed
However not easy going the other way if he stays training as usual with the defense group

Wednesday’s used to be an afternoon session, kicking off between 3pm and 4pm.
