Training 2022 Pre-season

Was talking with mates, but from what I watched Dan McStay very impressive.
Could be a big year for him I am hoping. One of the mates has a son playing for Melbourne and at one point offered “how clean are their hands.”
Yeah I'd really prefer to see us hold him closer to goal a lot more of the time. Yes his ability to cover ground is a real feature of his game, but I think he will be far greater benefit to us if we can play him in more of an Alastair Lynch (late career)/Ben Brown (2021) type role. To me this is a win-win-win:

  1. Gives us better structure forward of centre, and won't require us to be quite as precise as we need to be when we kick to our smalls going inside 50.
  2. Defences will still be tempted to play their best defender on Joe Daniher. If that means their second or even third defender is closest to goal and is charged with organising the defence, well, be my guest.
  3. On the other hand, if they do choose to play their best defender on McStay, well that frees up Daniher and co a wee bit, and as a knock on effect may allow us to hit up our smalls inside 50 more easily.

I remember when I was 'shouted down' ;) a few years ago for saying that I think McStay will turn into a 40+ goal a season forward and last year I thought we finally saw the player he could be, averaging 1.5 a game despite coming back from an injury (thus ruining his pre season) and getting injured in the first game of the finals. With a full pre season behind him, I reckon he'll top 40 this year.
There were plenty on here who were critical of him and called for his demotion, there was a time he had very few friends. I put my hand up I was one. If I said anything back then I apologise. He is very important now linking the forwards to the backs with his mobility.

Methinx, like many I was more disappointed that Dan was not producing to his potential. Methinx, like many, that maturity is helping Dan reach his potential - and he will be a star over the next few seasons.

Methinx, Dan McStay might be hard to hang onto, if he has a really good year.
Teams like Collingwood will come hunting.
Free agent this year.

Dan has been a committed club man since the day he arrived, and a Queenslander for 8 years? when his contract is up. Now that he is an automatic best 22 in a team in genuine contention for at least 3 years, I would be surprised if he moved on.

I am certainly hoping we have banked the money in the cap.

Can't see that being the case given all the reports about our cap for this year
Hope Dan has a great year and is rewarded with solid contract
I guess we make up the cap the usual ways via delisting and possibly trading

The players CBA comes to an end this year so will be interesting to see if the Total Player Payments has an upward trend
From the figures below the Clubs had an overall increase of $265,471 this year
However with covid issues that related to player deals over the past two seasons, not sure where each club is positioned

1. Total Player Payments The Total Player Payments for each AFL Club will be as follows:
2021 : 13,273,522
2022 : 13,538,993

We had Dan at Mayne Tigers for training one night (with Hugh iirc) and some kid in a Hawks guernsey in question time said “why would you want to be in Brisbane, go and play for a proper team.” Dan said without hesitation that he loves it here, loves the club and teammates and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Methinx maturity is helping bigfooty posters reach their potential where they support elite athletes developing their game and bodies/fitness and peaking in their mid to late twenties.

So any word on Zorko's fitness. A poster mentioned he overheard chat on Friday night that he had aggravated an injury?
He certainly seems to have had quite a subdued and interrupted off-season.

Also on Dan McStay and our forward setup...

I thought we looked very good last season during our run prior to Hipwoods injury with Dan playing the CHF role, pushing up the ground. He was an excellent link player and a target coming out of defence. We were also very flexible in that period, being able to vary our targets deep. It meant that depending on matchups and the stage of the game we were able to exploit what we thought was the best target. Sometimes it was Hipwood, another time it was Cameron then Daniher, even McStay. It was hard for the opposition to manage.

I think we will continue that approach this year and adding Rayner and Cocky as mid sized options just makes us even more dangerous.
