Training 2022 Pre-season

The craziest round 1 was when we lost to the Eagles 150-100 or so in Perth and were stoked with ourselves, back patting all around for reaching 100 points. Leppitsch era I think.

Was the game against Fremantle when Browny broke his face and we lost at the death also Round 1? I was on my honeymoon so must have been 2011 (not to big note myself but yep, I impressively remember the year of my marriage).

Yep remember both. We've come so far.

Hayden Ballantyne goal from the pocket, right in front of me from memory.😲

Cam Rayner

For what it's worth, Zac Bailey is already a star so he is off the table in this conversation. As for Rayner, we thought this might have happened in 2021 but we were robbed of seeing his development after he blew his ACL in the pre-season. But once again the Lions have plans to use the former No.1 draft pick as a game-changing midfielder and we're backing Rayner to rise to the occasion. We've seen glimpses of what he can deliver in the forward line, and in the guts, and there is no doubt he will reach All-Australian level at some point … the question is, when? With all the extra running under his belt due to the rehab, it seems he has picked up a yard or two and improved his endurance. 2022 may well be the year he explodes. Jarrod Berry, who will turn 24 in February next year, is another who isn't far away from hitting his prime, and after a breakout year in 2021 (fourth in the club's B&F), no one would be surprised to see Brandon Starcevich in an AA blazer sometime soon. - Cameron Noakes

Would love to see a jump from Dev and Kiddy, and for Nakia to get the confidence in his body to fully showcase his abilities.

Port have really struggled with our big forwards in the past. Think we will rotate big o and fort down there in a 3 pronged attack with Mcstay and Joey . Fees pretty excited to see what Rayner can offer but we shouldn’t expect fireworks after a year out straight away . Hopefully cockatoo can be cherry ripe and him and Rayner can give us that big bodied midfielder we need . Berry also to go to a new level

I think that's a big call for a young man just back from a knee reco. All I would like to see is a more rounded/consistent performance from Cam this year while getting his swagger back after a year away from footy. Same said for the other 2 he mentions as well. Berry just needs to string games together this year while I think Starc needs to consolidate what was a good 2021 and continue his incremental growth in season 2022.

I agree and would love to see Dev & Kiddy step up and become automatic selections each week while Nakia could do anything should he also string a few games together.

2022 is going to be an exciting season for The Lions should we have a little luck with injuries.

Agree in regards to Cam. Have found some of the comments on the Lions board in regards to his development in comparison to other players laughable when the guy did his knee a year ago. From what I’ve seen across the years is that it takes awhile to regain the confidence back in the knee just in regards to playing top flight AFL standard footy. He can do all the training and running he wants but there is nothing like match fit. This implies to Berry as well. He hasn’t had the best few years due to illness and injuries and it would be quite interesting to see how he would progress with a full season under his belt. Starcevich is growing into his body and the game. He’s really only had two years of best 22 football. He can take a lot of confidence from doing that and just show further progress. He had a great season and if he was to again take a step forward even incrementally we would be quite surprised by what he could do IMO. Dev I hold a lot of hope for and he just seems like he has his head screwed on and is a student of the game. Working away to become the best player he could be. Nakia looks ripped and ready and has the confidence in his body. Joey has had a full season and that really has been downplayed and with another full pre-season should have again be more confident in his body.

Even though the season ended the way it did there are a number of positives to take out of it. We have some older players who have been carrying the load you might say and I feel with the younger guys getting that confidence and elevation in their game it’ll make us a very difficult prospect next season. What is it 100 days to go or so?

He’s got the build to put some serious size on.
Seems like very much a development pick, but in a professional system could jump some pretty big gains in a very short period of time.

Definitely. There were a couple of good kids on board at our third pick, but they were mostly HBF or HFF types, which we had already drafted, or a couple of kids similar to our father son kids next year.

I don't have huge expectations for Cam next season or Hippy either. Just getting back on the field, contributing and finishing the season without further injury will be good enough for me. Getting confidence in their body will take time but both are long term players for us and they shouldn't be rushed.

I can see Bailey, Berry, Starcevich, Joey n Cockatoo stepping up. Even Ah Chee can reach another level I think. A bit of body confidence into Gardiner, Adams n Payne is another bonus.

Then there's the young blokes, Dev, Prior, Kiddy, Madden and Tom Berry, they will be fighting to become regulars. There's improvement in all of them.

A full season of vfl into Lane, H Smith, Michael, Sharp, Mcfadyen, B Coleman and Uosis and we should see some good improvement there too.

We run deep next season with depth and potential in most areas. Can't wait for it to start.

Was just reading on the lions site that the club expects to announce some further Vfl signings in the coming weeks with a focus on local/qld players.

Wylie Buzza singed a while ago. Has anyone heard anything, any rumours? Any ideas as to who they would like to see signed? Things are pretty quiet, at least it's something to discuss.

For me I'd like to see a tall defender, got no idea who would fit the bill locally or as a returning queenslander. Ideally for me, around that 24yrs age group with potential to earn a list spot. Any ideas there people?

I guess other players that could get a gig would be Hammelman and Reville. I'd be interested to know what others thought, others that have had a closer eye on the 2nd tier comps. I don't know the budget or how many the club is likely to sign.

Also read that Tom Joyce has been asked to train on with West Coast as a chance to be picked up and fill their last open spot. Really happy about that, hope he goes well. Ballenden signed for a Sanfl team, can't remember off hand who. Any news on Brock Smith?

Gonna be holding my breath every time i will see Cam get the ball and try and twist or turn. Fingers crossed he can just get through and build the confidence this year. No massive expectations this year in my eyes for Cam.

Rich has had an arguably better career post ACL so the odds are probably in Cams favor!

Training at Yeronga again this morning.
Thanks ML, I'm here now, boys starting to arrive, looks like it might rain.
First time I've ever posted on my phone, it's a pain in the arse with small writing and these bloody ads you don't get on a desktop. I'll post a report when I get home.

So true ,there is always a risk.

Gees I need a 5am heads up.

If I had known, I could have done a River loop (instead of doing a Wynnum Manly loop) and stopped by and said g’day to M Malice, and maybe not have got soaked this morning (assuming the rain held off around Indro and the tennis centre this morning).
