Autopsy 2022 Rd 23 Choked again. Season Done.

Yeah my recollection was a bit off. Looking at it again Marchbank got a bit lost but there was too much space afforded to both Ginnivan and Elliot which is crazy considering they are clearly two biggest threats out the back
I really wanted stock to come good but looked at sea, and seems to be carrying a fair bit of extra weight.

Desperately want a huge off-season. It's huge if he becomes a player. Not much to get excited foe from this season regarding his long term outlook though.

Weiters got torn a new one by King on First Crack last night, for his lack of defensive organisation. They showed some footage which accompanied the last Elliot goal, and it was pretty damning on Weiters.
He is a liability in that sort of situation, to slow and lacks agility.
He needs a massive off season.

Don’t think it’s his speed or agility is the issue King was on about.

The footage (please someone link/post it) shows that Weiters is the general and SHOULD have called the wingman to his left back to cover and he drop out the back 20 meters or more.

He needs to watch May from Melbourne play. Controls the defensive set up and stands off the back so he can see the game unfold in front of him and have time to intercept or adjust…

Hamill should know better…

Thought he did a good negating job. Was on the bench for Elliot’s match winner and even his other goal apparently

I may be remember wrong, but I feel like Weiters was always an intercept champion that was never truly blessed with pace. I feel bulking him up into a big key defender has compounded his lack of pace and robbed him slightly of his potential.
Thankfully he is highly talented and intelligent, but I would love to see him shed a few kegs and have an off-season with whatever running coach that made a slow Cripps have what appears to be an explosive first few steps out of stoppages now.

Think a few of the contests and ground balls looked fairly average.

Can't just say he only had one directly kicked on him so was good. Too simplistic in my opinion.

Agree. We need both talls to get on their bike so much more. Will get a few more easy ones on the rebound (when we learn to rebound).

Both Charlie and Harry are meant to be elite runners and we had them touching hip to hip most of the season.

Our forward coach is hopeless.

Would love to bring in some intellectual property from the Eagles or Cats this off-season...

Sure but you raised him in relation to my comment re the match winning goal and lack of accountability on their two most dangerous forwards in that situation inferring Stocker may be at fault. He was on the bench. Can’t say I noticed too many glaring issues with his game yesterday tbh and in fact was impressed by a few moments.

I know, that was my opinion Re his speed and agilty

Well, allowing time to digest I can point out a few positives from the game.

No Kennedy and Walsh - Hopefully those 2 have another good uninteruppted preseason.

Curnow - Getting through the year unscathed.

Marchbank - What a player, if he can get consistency watch out next year.

Young - Last 2-3 weeks look so much better with Weiters back in the side. We found a deadly combo with those 2.

Motlop - Played pretty well in his first year. Should give Kozzi a ring on what he did in his 2nd pre-season to elevate his game.

Saad - What a year he had, class HB.

Docherty - Played so well as a midfielder with no Hewett, Walsh and Kennedy.

Setterfield - You can see the talent when he is allowed to play onball.

Am I disapointed? Yeah. Do we need to abuse our players/clubs on the social? No. Take it on a chin and deal with it and we go again next year.

See you lovely posters in the off-season Bluemours.

This is my major concern. It appears quite a few of our players either lack instinctive football smarts, struggle with decision making under pressure or both. Plenty will say that's a learned skill...I don't necessarily share that point of view. It's true for some, but for many it becomes a millstone that just gets heavier and heavier.

I hope they do learn from this but also wouldn't entirely surprise if this also scars some of them.

Talent/Ability is there. All between the ears for us.

Two weeks in a row we have dead set choked at the end of the game. Vossy needs to try and coach some game awareness into these players over the summer. I could pick out one or two examples, but its the entire group that needs to be taught this.

Hope this really stings over the summer, and the boys come back bigger and better next year

A few have said it but we need to invest in the best sports psychologist going around. I’d also get some experienced players in from other clubs who have had success and still have a year or two of footy in them so they can mentor our guys for a year or 2 (Breust and or Gunston). Also look at the 2022 retiree class and offer someone from a successful program a job as a player development officer (eg McEvoy, Lambert or one of the Josh Kennedys). And whilst the likes of Voss, Hammill, Hansen and Clark have lots of finals experience maybe we need to grab another assistant coach who’s worked in successful teams too (Yze or even Rutten).

The pressure only ramps up from here so we need to learn how to embrace it. In 2023 the pressure to make finals will be on from round 1 with the now demons of our 2022 choke hovering over our year until we are mathematically certain to make it. If we make the finals then the pressure will ramp up another notch. The reality is there are likely a lot more times like yesterday to endure in the coming years. We are closer to Melbourne of 2017 than Melbourne of 2020. IMO realistically we are still 2-3 years away from playing off in a GF.

Marchy was on Ginoven but got caught in no man’s land. He ‘nearly’ pressed up onto Pendles but didn’t. Then had left Ginoven to sneak out the back.

Problem there is he shouldn’t have made the decision to press up without a spare behind him. That wasn’t a choke. Just a total lack of footy for Marchy. Most of our players actually executed well under pressure. LOB can get encouragement from his clean ball handling on the day. That’s been a big lift for him. I noted he didn’t pay the ball on either - took his medicine.

Now he needs to work much harder in the gym than He has. But he’s improved immeasurably this year.

But on them - where were our wings when Charlie got the ball on half forward? Why had they pressed so far up the ground?

LOB needs to hit the scoreboard more as well, got a damaging left peg but he doesnt kick enough goals like an issac smith does

If he had been doing a good job then the fact he was sitting on the bench when both those 2 goals happened is another glaring question
Don’t think there is any question he needs to improve in particular his fitness levels but being benched at the only two moments that Elliot really impacted would more likely indicate he was doing a decent job over anything else.

Not suggesting he had an amazing game but did a job.

Still numb from yesterdays result but lets look on the bright side. We could be in Essendon's position.

Last year we were and essendon were in out position (or better, they made the 8) - a year is a long time in footy, you never know where we might be in 12 months time.

It is a function of the backline not playing a lot of football together. We took Doc out and Newman was injured. Newman is a smart experienced defender.

Williams, Marchy and McG have barely played together this year

Compare that to the Pies backline who have been playing together all year.

Hopefully we will practice close finishes at the end of every session next season.

Also we need to do what ever it takes to get Rocca back at the club to sort out the goal kicking. H and CC have poor goal kicking techniques and need to come up with something that is repeatable.

We blame the young bloke…where were the leaders telling him what needed to be done.

Yeah not keen on blaming this guy or that guy specifically, a poor first quarter didn't help and plenty of poor decisions by numerous players in the last.

Just what I remember from the game:

  • Charlie rushing
  • Cripps trying to take on three instead of a quick handball out (I really wish he'd stop trying to be superman)
  • Durds
  • 6 points kicked
  • couple of "interesting" decisions by Young in critical spots on the ground.
  • One of my favourites; shallow entries into the F50 but only Pies players front and centre from the flying pack for an easy turnover (where was even one of our smalls?)

Confident in saying the team panicked and is not ready to be playing finals and it's largely between the ears at this point. Three of our starting five mids not playing and it was still a very winnable game.

Quite often (but not always) "between the ears" gets fixed with maturity and experience, hopefully this group can get that right next year.

Weitering has a habit of flagging an injury when it occurs, no doubt...
However never seen him not play through or be largely effected on field through adversity...

Does anyone else think Weiterings drop in form, is just a result of him not being the main man...
Since being in the side Young, Marchbank and McGovern have all stood up and taken some of Weiterings possessions...

I know I'm not saying anything new but I am absolutely gutted with the result, that was shattering.

It doesn't and shouldn't come down to umpiring calls/non-calls but the consistency in application of chopping of arms or blocks was so disruptive to our momentum.

The bigger issues for me was

a) our lack of composure in that final 5-10 minutes when Collingwood were coming at us. We just struggled to absorb the momentum that Collingwood threw at us.
b) just some horrendous decision making and general game sense as well. Curnow, who did not have a great game by any means, made two critical errors in my view. The first was not taking the easy 15m kick to Durdin, and the second was letting Quaynor cut back into the corridor. If you're going to corral, do not let the player get goal side of you. There were others in there such as Durdin's horrendous kick inside 50, and McGovern getting sucked into the contest and allowing McCreary get on the outside.

All in all, a disappointing end to the season but we'll come back bigger, stronger, and better next season.
