He did it semi-regularly at the Suns, playing behind the ball in particular as an extra man in defence.

He's definitely capable of it but it's a bit hard for him here when you have big Harry busting up every pack and now Charlie this year. He's playing as a small/medium with us as opposed to the medium/3rd tall he was with the Suns (when forward, which wasn't all that often relative to how much we play him forward)

exactly, he hasnt shown to be a 'marking' option at all at carlton. thanks for agreeing

It will be interesting to see if two weeks is enough time to be considered. I am assuming Hayes knows our processes, he could slot into a role. Thinking Hayes can play alongside a Cotts or Newnes styled player. He is a good natural winger at VFL level, so hopefully that can translate into AFL.

Dont think Hayes plays anytime soon. Maybe get a game towards end of the year.

We aren't taking a ready to go 27 year old and possibly play him toward the end of the year. Don't be surprised to see him in this week as none of Cotts, LOB, Newnes would be considered locks for a wing position

He'll be playing... he got told days in advance he was going to picked up by us so daresay he's already had some comms prior to the MSD of what things to start preparing for... will prob have Weits and Hammil getting him up to speed for the next few days.

Wing spots are well and truly open. It is by far our weakest position on the ground when all our players are fit (given Voss has made it clear that Walsh/Cerra won't play there). As good as the improvement in obrien and cottrell has been neither would get a game in most other top 8 sides. Reckon Hayes is a decent shot for one.

Reckon if Kemp doesn't play this game as a forward, the club really don't rate his forward ability.

Did spend time training there in pre season and VFL games earlier in season.

Carroll and Motlop had poor games vs Collingwood and we clearly needed more height.

It speaks volumes that the MC have chosen to sacrifice Cripps' game in the ruck so that JSOS can spend more time as a tall forward target, rather than simply having JSOS do all the support rucking and have Kemp as a permanent tall forward, with Cripps back in his usual role.

If he was up to it, it would be so much better to simply plug in Kemp for Carroll or Motlop, rather than changing JSOS and Cripps' roles.

I don't think Hayes has played VFL for the last 2 weeks. Hiding him away and training with the AFL squad?

In: Durdin, Kennedy, Martin
Out: Weiters, Newnes, Carroll
Wouldn't mind seeing Hayes in for Cottrell. I love what Cottrell has done this year, but seeing Sidebottom dominate us was just so embarrassing.
Kennedy and Martin are undoubtedly part of our best 22, definitely have to play

Hayes been playing vfl with those guys, and been playing better than them from all reports. I agree, I think he’s close to selection right now.

If we drop Dow we might as well delist the poor guy.
He was OK last week and did enough to keep his spot and have a run of games. I know he's a whipping boy for many here, but he's more than earned his chance.

Kennedy should come back in at HF, has the marking ability and can kick 50. Means we play with 2 smalls instead of 3 in F50.

As I mentioned in the dow thread, I don’t want us shoehorning guys into other positions just to accomodate Dow because he can only do one very limited role.

Kennedy is a significant upgrade of Dow in the middle, so play Kennedy.

Like these changes :thumbsu:

Weitering —> Durdin (self explanatory)

Motlop —> Martin/Philp (we could use Martin's arial presence with Harry still injured, but Philp's last 2 weeks in the VFL have been very good)

Newnes —> Williamson (play him as a winger/forward, has had 3 great games in the VFL in a row)

Dow —> Kennedy (Dow stiff, but it keeps the same midfield dynamic)

Carroll —> Newnes (sub, Newnes provides some versatility)

In: Durdin, Kennedy, Martin
Out: Weiters, Newnes, Carroll
So you want Martin as sub? Someone else needs to come out of that side as Carroll wasn't in the starting 22.

I understand there's also a lot of people here wanting to bring Kennedy in for Newnes (keeping Dow in the side), but I'm guessing you're aware that this means Kennedy would start up forward? Most teams play 4 on-ballers plus a forward-mid (has been Walsh in recent weeks), but you want to play with 6? And no we can't move Cerra/Walsh to the wing because we've already got LOB and Cottrell there. :p

If you are looking to reward performance in the twos, Setterfield or Williamson should be coming in ahead of Martin (who gathered 2 possessions only, after half time)

Weitering -> S. Durdin
Motlop -> Martin
Dow/Newnes -> Kennedy
Carroll (Sub) -> Kemp (Sub)

Dow/Newnes out depends on how they want to structure with Kennedy coming back.

Newnes out means Kennedy, Cripps rotate a bit more forward and Walsh/Cerra a little bit wing to chop LOB and Cottrell out to allow for Dow's mid minutes.
Dow out for Kennedy is fairly like for like and we continue rotating Newnes, LOB and Cottrell through the wings.

Everyone sounds scared in here .. we are 8-3 for a reason and I’m my opinion this team is different to years gone by , we will win 5 plus games and make the finals and then hopefully with less injuries make a tilt for a flag
The reason we are scared is our 1st, 2nd and 3rd team is 8-3.

We are trotting out half a vfl side...AND were still competitive against good sides.

Incredibly impressive but the wheels will fall off before long...until we get our spine back.
