EF Mid Season Draft

B: Stocker Durdin Plowman
HB: Saad Young Docherty
C: Newnes Cripps O'Brien
HF: Martin Silvagni Owies
F: Durdin Curnow Fisher
OB: DeKoning Walsh Cerra
IC: Newman Kennedy Hewett Motlop
SUB: Mirkov

I'd still go Mirkov as sub. I'm not a fan of debuts as Subs but it's about best for the team and best for winning games and I reckon he'd be all for it. It means as soon as we get an injury to a small player DeKoning goes forward and we change it all up because we have an abundance of talls and we can. If DeKoning happens to go down then just our luck.

Reckon Durdin comes straight in to play full back.

Would not be surprised if Hayes name comes up as well for Newnes.
Surprised you have Motlop in.

He didn’t apply much pressure last week. Reckon he needs to go back to vfl like Carroll.

I need to see another big game from Cripps to convince me that he's not playing injured again... Getting slightly concerned.

Could drop any or all of LOB, Cotts or Newnes. Suspect Newnes. I'm kinda liking Cotts this year, even if he didn't have a great game. Just needs to learn that his running ability - both speed and endurance - is a weapon to be utilised. It's one of the many issues with LOB - has no power or speed to break from an opponent, which is pretty essential to the position.

Marchy would have to be a fair chance now. Will be heart in mouth stuff again, like it is for Charlie, like it is for Doc, like it will be for Cunners etc, but looking forward to seeing him out there.

It's an important game for us - we need this and an Eagles win to really shore up our finals. Wouldn't be a concern if not for the injuries. Hopefully we get the team selection right this week - arguably cost us the win last week, which is infuriating.

Cripps sacrificing what he has done this year to take some ruck time for TDK to push forward and create a mismatch. All class

Most confident of a win I’ve been all year. They’re a pathetic side. Their contested ball winning is (Parish aside) non existent. Their pressure is useless.

They’ve got nothing. I’m barely even thinking about this game. My mind is on Richmond.
That is the very mindset that leads to upsets in sport.

My confidence in winning this game just dropped 20% after reading this

Great story... Sam Durdin. 30 years from now:

Tell us a story from your footy playing days Grandpa! Please, Please...

Well, alright. My career started kind of well, I was picked up early and for the first year or so, I thought I'd be playing for many years in the AFL. It seems to come to you easy when you're young, but life throws up some curve balls. Then...
(Sam, stares into the distance and his eyes become glassy)

What Pa Pa what?

Well, things happen and before I knew it I was playing in front of 3000 people at Glenelg Oval in Black and Gold.

Ughh... sounds rough pa pa.

It was, it was.

So...

Hmmm, sorry, where was I... I got a call from a bloke called Nick, who said he was from the Carlton Football Club. He said 10 days from now you will play in front of 80,000 people. I told him BULLSHIT and hung up.

Grandpa!

Sorry little one...
But then, as luck would have it I was on a flight to Melbourne to meet my new team-mates at Princes Park real quick, I played that very week!

Is that the game you made drug cheats cry?

Oh, little fella, they tried every trick in the book but try as they might, they just couldnt catch us.

So you got to sing the famous song... da da da da da...

I did, I did, and not for the last time either.

Night, boys and girls...

Post of the year. Love it. Maybe 40 years from now. 30 from now makes him 57? 2 years older than me. I don't wanna be a grandpa....yet.😂

Based on stats?

Stats, positioning, but most of our smalls were poor in this area

Based on the 'vibe' as stats don't illustrate that point, nor does the game. IMO - Motlop will not play against Essendon. Durdin and Fisher will not be dropped.

A number of players could be rotated out, but never suggested it would be Durdin or Fisher

Durdin attacks play like a missile. And in terms of physicality and intent don’t think we can fault him. Whilst I don’t recall specifically against filth he often chases and tackles.

Fisher is good sometimes but he can also be a bit selective in terms of his intent to attack ball/player. I think he’s getting better but he did have a poor/quite game against filth.

Motlop is a bit raw atm having now only played 3 games so a bit unfair to expect him to play like a bull in a china shop. However there is no reason to not chase with intent and apply pressure that way. He was giving up chase way too easily.

As Arrow said, if you’re picking a 27 year old in Hayes you’re picking him to play. And unless Durds stinks it up on the track, he’s sure to get a game as well.

For me it’s

In: Durdin, Hayes, Kennedy, Martin

Out: Weitering, Motts, Cotts, Newnes (with one of Cotts or Newnes as the super-sub).

I’d give Dow another week. He and Kennedy can rotate through the forward line and midfield. Both provide a different look.

I’d be tempted to bring in Marchbank for Plow or Stock, but I’d actually like to see him complete a VFL game.

If you are bringing in Durdin (which i think we will) as the tall back then you can afford to give marchbank more time. Plowman has been ok since coming back in and stocker has ben serviceable.

I don't get why so many are dropping Motlop?
He's kicked a goal every game and could've had 4-5 against Swans. Deserves another week.

Because he has a very bad habit and he needs to go work on that at a lower level.

Kicking a goal means little if the opposition keep running away from him due to lack of pressure and chase. Which in turn leads to shots on goal up the other end.

The #1 problem Voss has is plugging the TDK hole - when he rucks there is only Charlie as a dangerous marking target for any CBB win. When he is forward providing a second target - we lose Cripps into a faux ruck and the #1 extraction machine which means the odds of a CBB win diminish significantly.

The lack of back-up genuine ruck means that Carlton's most effective weapon - CBB win to marking forward and quick goals is no longer available or more easily defended against.

This is why the games have been a struggle since Pittonet got injured and since McKay has been absent.

The #2 problem Voss now has is Weitering going down for the next 5 -6 games.

If CBB becomes more even - the opposition has the straight kick to a marking tall strategy opened up for them and Weitering is by far the most effective intercepting spoiler and reader of the game and Carlton loses its defending 'general' and organiser...

So Carlton is diminished at both ends of the ground.

This is backs to the wall stuff - a bit of a downer as far as what could have been this season - but also a fantastic opportunity for Voss to really get a handle on which players can step up to cover for the injury induced mess and which players are just what they are.

I don't like Cripps playing ruck in CBB - not one bit. This has to be fixed/changed.

The 'odds' of having all of McDonald/Pittonet/McGovern/McKay/Weitering all out injured at the same time ....as they say - luck is a fortune. Fortunately, Voss is a coach who doesn't concede. I don't think he is giving players a 'leave' pass - all strength to him.

Will be fascinating to see whether Durdin is played first game up or not and would love to know what the thinking is behind elevating Hayes- the pressure must be on a few existing listed players - big time.

Deadset I would bring Mirkov in strengthen the CBB area
Releases the pressure valve on so many other areas, which are explained above
So many people saying "he's not ready", heck - how many times did we see Pittonet put in a sub-10 possession game last year? Bring Mirkov in with a mandate to neutralise or win tap work and provide a body around the ground.
