i believe our f50 tackles are quite low though aren't they

This is a fantastic stats website to play around with team/player/opposition averages across A LOT of stats in 2022.

We’re actually 7th in the comp for I50 tackles, but you’d imagine a lot of that is tackles around the stoppages. We’re 16th in the comp for Oppo metres gained, so there’s no a lot of pressure going out defensively from our F50

Looking at some of the stats…

I wouldn’t worry too much about DE %, and Kicking Efficiency. Collingwood a kick away from a GF and were dead last in the comp this year for KE, and 2nd last DE

Some stats of ours that point to work rate, having a very young list, etc

Uncontested Possessions - 15th
Marks Inside 50 per entry - 15th
Marks on Lead - 17th
Intercept marks -18th
Oppo Inside 50’s - 14th
Oppo tackles in our D50 - 17th
Bounces - 18th (we avg 2.3 per game???)
Defensive 1-1 - 1st (meaning we leave our defenders exposed the most)
Centre Clearances - 14th
Metres gained - 14th

Our 1%, Pressure Acts, tackles, stoppage clearance, and even D50 1-1 loss rate stats are all pretty good. I’ve looked at these stats today and they tell me a few things.

We’re 18th for avg games played, and 18th for ave age, and a lot of the stats we’re not doing great in are stats that will improve with experience.

My main worries are:
  • Centre Clearances. Considering we’re doing well with stoppage clearances, it really points to ROB’s ruck craft at the bounce
  • Metres Gained, Bounces and uncontested possessions. Tells me we’re lacking in run all over the ground, both in terms of presenting options, work rate, and taking on the game itself, particularly from the HB. Dawson is great and pinpointing a pass, but it’s the likes of Hamill that we’re looking to in terms of generating run from the backline. We’re really missing this.
  • Oppo tackles inside our D50. Being 17th speaks to the amount of times it’s in there, but also general speed and cohesion on getting it out, and our players giving an option further up the ground to keep it out of our D50.
  • Intercept Marks. We’re dead last in the comp. The top teams? Melb, Pies, Geel, Richmond. We HAVE to start asking our players to use manic work rate to get to the contest, and to mark instead of spoiling. Bring the game back on our terms instead of continuous stoppages.

After watching finals, and after going through the season stats, I can see why we’re prioritising ‘defence first’ footy, promoting speed and two-way runners, but we still have a long way to go in terms of experience and getting that right repetitively. The game has turned into Speed, speed, speed, and we’re fairly slow at the moment.

because the stat is an absolute number and the context you are giving is relative - dont worry its mathematical
The more the ball is in our forward 50m, the more opportunity for tackles & vice versa.... don't worry, it's about interpreting statistics. ;)

Correct.

As someone who posts Fun Facts, this is definitely right. You can manipulate and cherry pick stats to suit your argument.

And the s**t hit the fan because we're getting someone
There’s lots of posters that see bias just because there’s a report about something we’ve stuffed up. But there is genuinely weird and inexplicable bias when it comes to us and trading. Somehow it seems only our job to facilitate easy trades out of our club by bending over and then pay whatever is being asked when acquiring.

Could it be a hangover from when we regularly sideways pineappled up with non-anchor, sell quick to move on to other stuff David Noble running trade week? Mid first and mid second for peak Danger is a hell of a benchmark to set.

Clearly we like to send numbers to the contest to make up for the fact we have a bunch of players who are poor one on one.

So even though this results in higher tackles, the increased contested situations allow the opposition to do the same and their superior ability results in them usually being more effective at tackling and usually winning the game

NAB AFL draft night 28th November and the 29th November
What prime time channel is covering that?

Or do you just mean you can find it in the AFLs app, if you click through?

How are they monetizing that? They might throw a few logos up to acknowledge NABs sponsorship of the AFL, but the additional ad revenue would be miniscule.

That's why basic stats are misleading.

Like how Thommo would get 40 touches every week but his opponent would usually be the best player on the ground.
That’s harsh on Thommo. It’s like saying any stats are misleading for elite mids that match up on each other as both could be in the top 2 players on the ground.

It is harsh as you could say the exact same about Laird.

I agree though that I don't think the numbers tell the story, but it's ultimately about the team that wins. This says those possessions were impactful and meant something.

Surely you don't think it's as simplistic as "Team A won so Team A's best midfielder was obviously more impactful than Team B's best Midfielder"

Thommo was pretty much the best in the business in that extraction role for a few years. There’s no doubt that he wasn’t as damaging as some mids on a per possession basis, but he surely played his role as well as could be expected. The question mark is over the importance of that role, but there’s no doubt that we assigned a high value to it. We tried to turn various outside types like Wigg and Grigg into Thommo clones in the 2s.

Without question, I hate football......BUT as a glutton for punishment I am back, hoping by miracle have we had some elite big bodied midfielder randomly request a trade to us over the weekend?

I've heard Darren Jarman is making a comeback.
Not quite sure that's the type of big body you mean though.

So we should make him the sub then?
DJ: "Mmmm. Sub."
