If the Pies pay say 300k to oust Grundy, that is a fair tap into the salary cap for other next few years with him and Treloar.

My fear would be us being dumb enough to go for it (get Grundy) because it isn't like we've been burnt by a FA we didn't get wanting to come to us a couple of years after.

Personally there's a few conditions I would do it..

  • must only take 650k of his contract with the rest paid by pies
  • ROB gets traded
  • remuneration for ROB is traded to pies for Grundy. No first round picks involved.
With where are list is right now, we have too much money, not enough draft capital and not enough high end talent.

Collingwood have a greater need for cap space than draft capital.

Why the hell would we try to save $350k we aren't spending to make the trade all about how much more draft capital we are willing to give up compared with other clubs (who don't have our cap space)?

Play to our competative advantage, or don't play at all.

You're dreaming...

If he goes it will be for a 1st round pick, likely a 2022 1st or at the very least a a 2023 1st. Richmond would be the most likely candidate with their aging midfield IMO.
Depends where he chooses to go and what they can offer.

Two early seconds is VERY fair for Hopper.

Too much. I think our 2nd this year, and some pick swaps would be enough.

they need salary relief and he’s not an A grader or all that young
I think a pick around 20 and some other pieces isn't that far off.

How do you know we aren't spending that salary?
Say we target JHF and Rankine with big offers than effectively swapping ROBs contract for Grundy makes sense.

We don't have the cattle. We are the youngest team in the league and have been signing both emerging and quality established players on longer term contracts (ie front loading).

In my opinion, signing JHF on a good package should be more of a priority than Grundy, but we probably have the cash for both.

If not, keep the draft capital unless Grundy decides he loves the Crows and won't play anywhere else. Then maybe 2 early 2nds will get it done.

Honest question as I have seen very little opposition games this season and I know he's been injured but would Grundy be an upgrade on ROB and would he help the development of our young mids?

At a guess I would say yes but is the contract worth it?

I think Hoppers injury and GWSs salary situation are going to impact his value more then what people think.

A soon to be 27 year old inside mid needing a knee arthroscope. It's not a deal breaker, but its certainly a red flag.

He will be 26 start of next year but I don’t think I would take him for one of our first rounders. We need our first this year to be a top 10-15 player in the league - and Hopper is no where near that (as good as he is)

Hopper is a gun underated because of the other midfielders around him and because of the team he plays for. He’s worth a first rounder but would rather we continue hitting the draft

Thankfully he should be playing VFL next weekend so we'll be able to get a look on how he can finish of the year. If he is fit, there is no doubt he will help the development. He is a smart footballer.

List management would want to get this one right as we don't want a Hannebery situation.

So a guess if you get virtually double the disposals, hitouts, marks, tackles per game (Rob v Draper) you are a lesser player. I know Draper kicked a good goal on the weekend but maintain some sense of reality about your opinions

I dont know the stats but every time i see draper he is a blood and guts player that plays physical no nonsense footy and he can kick a goal. I like him. ROB for a big guy that can mark, seems to not physically impose himself on games when he really could be.

Re possessions, i would not take them as the be all and end all as we could say matt crouch gets lots more touches than soligo but i'd rather soligo in the side

If Collingwood want to do a salary dump let’s lean into it. If we take Grundy’s entire contract will they give us a first rounder?

By the accepted wisdom then we’re getting both additional draft firepower to help in the future and we’re more competitive in the short term which Roo loves.

Win-win!

Frankly, that strikes me as not far off.

They pay 400k and we’ll swap RoB’s bad contract for Grundy’s straight up.

Maybe.
