Hope Nicks prepped Phillipou in what to say to Hawks recruiters to sound a flight risk, especially if a deal is ready to go should he slip to pick 10.

I think he will be gone to one of the Dons or Hawks before we can get involved

That's the way I see it playing out.

2 weeks ago I thought his slide was pushing him into the 12-15 range and a potential trade could eventuate. But just this week I've felt like his upside has seemingly gotten more clubs back on the hook. So much so that I think the Hawks is the latest he'll go.

I'm mentally preparing for that as the reality, and if it changes on draft night then i'll allow myself to hope.

If we are keen on Phillipou, why did we give up pick 5 so easily to Gold Coast? There wasn't even anything to suggest we were trying to keep it. Given Gold Coast gave up pick 7 and a player for nothing but salary cap relief, they can't have valued pick 5 that highly to not take our future 1st if we offered that instead. Which takes me back to thinking the Crows don't rate Phillipou and would prefer to keep the future 1st. Nicks talk might just be for the future and if Phillipou wants to come home.

Of course we rate him very highly but a certainty vs a possibility is what it comes down to...Born 4 days later and he's in the 2023 draft.

We were never a certainty to be able to get him at pick 5 and it's looking increasingly like Essendon along with the Hawks with early picks are the clubs most into him.

Which adds up.

If we kept 5 this year and gave away next year's first for Rankine - then didn't get our target this year because he was gone by pick 5, not good.

We kept next year's first, gave away 5 - then if we can get our target with a trade back in - all good ... if not we still have the highly rated 2023 pick.

Makes sense to me.

Thinking on this, I think the draft night might go like this

1. - GWS Cadman
2. - Brisbane Ashcroft
3. - North Wardlaw
4. - North Sheezel
5. - Essendon either Phillipou or Tsatsas
6. - Adelaide ?? either Phillipou or Tsatsas

Therefore had we kept 5 in that hypothetical scenario, we are getting either Phillipou or Tsatsas and both players would add greatly to our midfield for different reasons so it would have been a win either way.

Bailey Humphrey not Tsatas would be the other player we'd look at after Phillipou.

you don't think an elite projecting outside mid that can really rack them up would not be right up the top of the list?
Not Tsatas no, Humphrey far far more aggressive at the contest, a real aerial threat and a goalkicking mid.

Or we trade 5 on the night for future 1st or multiple late firsts this year etc

Saying we don't think he would be there at 5 so why bother shows a lack of imagination

Did Adam D'Aloia not come on as was expected he was being talked up big time as a junior?? Mutineer?
One dimensional inside mid, not quick and average disposal. Good at what he does if a team needs an inside mid that can win his own ball.

So we miss him and he gos to either, we at least had a horse in the race, and pick 5 if we missed out.

After all was said and done, Rankine was as good a certainty to leave GC don't you think?
