It's that time of the year where we're about to hit crazy season on the board.

In order to keep some order around the place, I've locked all threads except the standard ones that we have during the season - refer #5. Will leave the rate my preseason thread going until final lockout.

Any new threads that don't fit in to the standard structure will likely end up merged with either an existing suitable thread, or the General Chat thread as a catch-all.

Good luck to everyone - this is one of the toughest years to pick a starting side that I can remember.

I'm really struggling with:

Dylan Stephens & Will Brodie

vs

Jake Soligo & Mitch McGovern

Stephens JS doesn't fill me with confidence and I'm worried that Brodie's preseason is a false dawn. Admittedly I didn't follow Soligo during the pre-season so have no idea about his scoring capability or JS, so that's another spanner in the works. And McGovern could be playing a lockdown role tonight if Balta plays forward so might not be getting the intercepts that he did against Melbourne. Although you'd think that Carlton's system should lean itself to him being the interceptor.

I'm leaning towards Soligo & McGovern.

Thoughts?
I reckon Dyl Stephens job security is rock solid. They lost Hewett and Dawson, he walks straight into that team and doesn't leave it imo. Who else will take his place?

And even more annoying is that McGovern is the other option, who also plays tonight.

If Xerri doesn't make the final team not sure what I'll do. Might be forced in to Brodie at F4 - yuk.
CCJ is a decent forward, trash ruckman
Xerri is a decent ruckman, track forward
Goldy is Goldy
SouvaLarkey is also obviously playing

That works fine for a tall fwd/ruck squad

I'll put good money on Xerri being named. It's whether he gets enough ruck time to warrant the selection. I'm doing it, because the upside is too good to ignore. If he gets slaughtered in the ruck then I'm sure Goldy will get a heap of ruck time. But he's coming up against Reeves and/or Max Lynch, so Xerri has a chance to do well and secure his role as the #1 ruckman.

Zurhaar plays tall also.
Land of the giants..

A very West coke tall forward, ruck set up.

Wow.

People are going to use a non playing player to get a VC score of 132?

That is absolute madness.

I would not even do it for Petracca's score

It is all about the green dots this round.

Cash gen is king.
It’s not just a VC score, also get to loop a rookie score.

With a VC score that big I’d be trying to take it. Could set you off to a flyer.

I'm really torn on this one, love to get the rnd 1 flyer and a 163 as skipper is a great start.

Option a) Leave as planned, back Grundy with the C. 30 green dots.

Option b) Currently have Durdin as my F7 emergency, if he manages a 75+, then turn Baldwin into Martin (provided he isn't playing or sub) and get Durdin's 75+ + Trac 163. Hope that Martin gets a crack in the next few weeks.

Option c) Grundy to Preuss, play Hayes this week. upgrade to premo elsewhere.

Don't want to be too short-sighted, but Trac is only in 11% of sides, so it could be a big boost early.

In your shoes...

I would definately avoid option C. You are talking about restructuring your whole side for what is likely to be 30-40 odd points. Rucks (in my view) is also the position you should mess with least as the genuine options are far more limited that other positions (and the cash required to corrective trade is significant).

Out of a and b - a is much more likely to the best option with cash generation and overall points. Particularly in a year when rookies are relatively thin on the ground and the ones that are available are typically expensive, further limiting their cash generating potential. COVID also means loopholes are much more likely.

B can work in very specific circumstances. Those circumstances being that one of your lines doesn't have enough playing rookies anyway so a temporary donut/loophole (or structural overhaul) would have been required anyway or if a rookie that was otherwise going to be selected for Round 1 (and is basically a certainty for Round 2) misses this week for a temporary reason (such as gastro, concussion from last week, COVID protocols, etc.). Preferably this would come with an assurance from the coach the player is to return to the selected side.

Edit: I do like the idea of looping Durdin tonight to re-evaluate. He would have to go big (i.e. 100+) for me to think that selecting a non playing rookie would be worth the trade off (unless in the circumstances above)

That also means he is No22 in the team if picked. With Stringer and Snelling missing probably first to be dropped as well. I would prefer Dixon or Hayes at $102k

Allo kents. Totally missed last nights game but so glad we’re finally here. Analysis paralysis starting to kick in.

Off to a solid but common start.
4/454 Macrae(vc) Dunkley Oliver Gawn.

Rest of the week off work so looking forward to lots of footy…and a pissed off mrs lol

Macdonald appears to have a more complete game (currently) than the other two boys.
Has the most potential early days for scoring.

Job security is still up in the air.

Day, Impey, Breust and McEvoy are due to return over the next 1-4 weeks.
