Gold Coast Suns have some draft concessions stripped back by AFL

Gold Coast will be forced to match bids on a pair of promising academy prospects next year after the AFL stripped back some of its draft concessions.

However the Suns could yet retain their priority access to Darwin with the league deferring a call on whether Gold Coast will keep its preferential treatment in the NT capital.

Gold Coast received a host of concessions at the end of 2019, most notably being granted pick No. 1 in that year’s draft, allowing them to take both Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson.

Among the other allowances provided to the Suns was the ability to pre-list players from Darwin and their Queensland academy zone without needing to match bids on those players.

The likes of Malcolm Rosas jnr and Joel Jeffrey were recruited through that mechanism.

The AFL told clubs this week that the Suns would no longer be able to pre-list Queensland academy players.

That will mean that promising talls Jed Walter and Ethan Read, both eligible for next year’s draft and both of whom played in Saturday’s futures grand final curtain raiser at the MCG, will be subject to bids from rival clubs like northern academy players at other clubs.

But the status of Darwin product Beau Tedcastle, eligible for this year’s draft, remains up in the air. The league has committed to making a decision soon as to whether Gold Coast will have priority access to the forward.

The AFL has also told clubs that the Suns will retain their additional rookie list spots until the end of 2024 at least.

I’d be filthy with that as a Freo supporter.

I would as well, but... we don't have anything better to offer and his manager implied Freo can't really push it because we are on the bottom of the ladder, he hasn't exactly ran with the same Logue line of wanting a fair outcome.

I don't think Freo will cop the Lobb offer though, he is more valuable to them than a 2nd round pick.

Nah I'd definitely rather Bedford, but if that doesn't work out and we're looking to add another pressure small to the list then Zane Williams should be a consideration.
So better than Mahony? 🤣

In our list I'd take mckay over curnow.
We'd love the height and dominance.
Only reason curnow does so well is because Harry takes the best defender every week

He reminds me of Waite.

Would definitely be looking at Zane Williams. He's played most of his SANFL career as a small pressure forward but Geelong swung him down back and he looked great there in the second half of the VFL season.

I'd be bringing him in as a small forward but the versatility is nice and he's only 21.
You were big on him, Mass & El Dour for our MSD....

So when do you start as our Head Recruiter at the club?

Heard whispers about us having a crack at Dunkley?

We don’t have to draft capital. And tbh, though I don’t know the reason why he’s unhappy at the dogs, I’m not sure I’d be keen on him because he seems to always be looking for a better deal. Could be wrong, he could just hate being at the Dogs, but still I think a bit of buyer beware there. I definitely wouldn’t want to front end his contract.

Free agent. Just offer him 3 mil a year and the dogs will have to take compensation.

That's awesome.

Jed Walter Would be perfect for us, tough, powerful and physical full forward. In all likelihood he is probably going to go top 6-8 ever.

I am not sure why posters dont rate him as high as i do. Would walk into any team in the comp. Great strong mark for his size, tough as nails can plonk him anywhere on the field and he will more than do his job. He will be only 26 at the start of next year. In saying that like someone said would cost a lot to get and rightly so in my opinion. I would love him at North.

Would you be happy with Bevo as your coach?

Unless he is happy to go into the PSD I can't see us doing a trade, that is the major issue. We don't have the capital for it assuming we don't want to trade pick 1.
