This draft is very interesting, as in very even

Guys like Hotton, Burgiel could have similar output at the next level

Jefferson has more upside/growth than a Cadman to match future output

None of the highly ranked mids have high scoreboard impact

I wouldn't overreach in this draft
Who would you take@ pick 49?
Drury? Noble?

Most of the teams who finished above us last year are adding star power and improving their lists. Geelong looking like adding Bowes, Henry and Pick 7. Brisbane Ashcroft and Dunkley. Richmond Taranto and Hopper. Collingwood Hill and McStay plus a couple. I like Blake Acres but it feels like if that's all we do we are going backwards relatively. I would hope we left some flexibility in H's 7 year deal to back end it a bit. If so we can't be too far off a Bowes discussion especially if Dow and/or Setters move on. I will puke if Geelong, Hawthorn or even Essendon get a massive benefit from Suns ineptitude when it seems we were not too far off.
We don’t need any more players. This is the team now. Add some kids from the draft and it will either win us flags or not. Nothing is guaranteed. But this is the team. There won’t be anymore “star power” required

Do people think we have an infinite salary cap?

Think the aim will be to package Dow with a pick for a better pick.

Dow and 28 to GWS for 21.
Dow and 28 to Essendon for 22.
Dow and 49 to WB for 30.
Dow and 49 to North for 33 (if they get it from Port).

Think those would be the kinds of deals to chase.

GWS are losing some inside mids, so Dow could be a cheap replacement for them. They're also not a team overly fussed with defensive workrate.
Essendon are crying out for a dynamic mid, but the barrier is always Dodo. Could substitute Setterfield in this deal too, by the sounds of things.
WB losing Dunkley might be semi-interested, though their midfield is already stacked (if a little one-paced).
North probably need to do what we did early rebuild - bring in a handful of cheap former first rounders who haven't kicked on, and see if any can come good.

Cats are losing their greatest Captain, and arguably greatest ever player. How are we going backwards relatively?

Unfortunately we don’t have salary cap mobility , some outrageously generous contracts that were structured a few years back to Gov , Williams& Martin are coming back to haunt us and yes all the finalist have improved their lists and will be stronger. Imagine coming up against the Melbourne wing a fit Grundy / Gawn ruck team.
our elites Sam, Charlie & Harry combined restrict our position too.
How are we haunted by Gov and Martin's front-ended contracts? Gov has 1 more year, and Martin 2 at well below AFL average wage.

Wonder if we could do a future pick swap... Would love to get early in next year's draft.
e.g. Dow, 28 and F1 for either GWS or Norf F1

Those other clubs have been forced to act due to the age concerns and positional depth gaps of their list, whereas for us IMO a lot of that is in place and now the improvement must comes from within in the following ares:
- young guys on our list like Durdin, Motlop and Kemp (I’m less confident on Carroll and Philp)
- it’s also easy to forget Cerra and Walsh are not yet 22 and still have a lot of scope to improve
- H and TDK also have scope to improve given they are 24 years old and play in positions where it typically takes longer to mature
- getting a meaningful contribution from previously injury prone types like Gov, Marchy, Williams, Cunner and Martin will make a huge difference and put less pressure on playing the likes of Owies, Plowman etc
- I also think off the back of his finish to the year there is a chance Setts has a Kennedy-like jump in output in 2023
On the whole lots to be excited about IMO.

Agree with all that you have said. But if we can have all that AND improve our list as well, why wouldn't we want to do that? A few posters disagreeing with me, which is fine, but an opportunity like Bowes and #7 is a unicorn in a market in which it is just so tough to get a breakthrough advantage. As I said it feels like it might not be too far out of our reach. Whoever lands that deal gets a pretty big leg up on the other 17 I reckon.

Don’t think it’s fair to ask Cripps, Charlie, Harry, Walsh etc. to take unders only to bring in Bowes on 850k a season.

This is not 2019 where we have shed loads of cap space to spare.

If Bowes were willing to smooth that out over four or five seasons I have no doubt we’d throw our hat in the ring but there is no reason for him to do that. Good on him for getting what he’s owed.

I don't believe we should be blinked onto changing our current recruiting and trading philosophy because of what so called other clubs are doing.

Besides, there is hardly anyone else currently available worth trading for..

I am more confident than ever in our club's recruiting philosophy under Austin and Agresta.

The organic improvement of Motlop, Carroll and hopefully an injury free Kemp will make us much better than brining in another foot soldier from another club (which is what is left on the trade market it seems)

On the brighter side should Gov , Williams , Martin, Marchy & Cunners stay on the park for half a season together , Baggers Will playing finals 2023.

Bowes is an interesting one. Is he any better than Setterfield? I don't think so. It would be a big price to pay for a VFL player just to get pick 7
