Is there a chance that if we do, and free up $750-800K, we alter our stated strategy?

I mean we can't say from the beginning "we are after X", if we can't afford him without pushing players out. We do seem to be pretty keen to NOT keep either, which as you say, would appear to leave us a bit thin on depth.
I think Setters and Dow are far from a combined $750k.

And with your second point, I think that's where the challenge with shopping around depth lies. Realistically we want to keep just one of Dow/Setters but we don't care who (as long as we get the best trade for the other). While it's unknown which player that may be, we're left to awkwardly put them both up for a trade but also let them know they're valued players, as likely at least one of them will still be at the club next year.

If you delist a player, they become a free agent. We get nothing and the player chooses his club to play for, not a great move.
Ah yes you are correct, I meant leave uncontacted, whatever the mechanism is to grab a play through PSD, make * sweat, club shouldn't trade for magic beans or picks in the 60s

Wouldn’t be $750k, but wouldn’t be a lot short. I would estimate Setters to be sitting around $400k given that we grabbed him from GWS where they have paid big overs consistently on kid’s contracts. Dow was regarded as a young gun and re-signed early, absolutely would be on $200k, maybe better.

With a larger body of work, Will would command a second rounder, but no one is paying that when it is obvious we need either or both of him and Dow gone to create space and salary cap. If we move both, we will create almost half a million of cap space for player retention. I don’t want to see Setterfield gone, and am a bit “meh” either way for Dow, but it makes sense, and is more important than “winning the trade”.

Our top 28 or so picks itself, and with very few exceptions are there for the long haul. Many are due an incremental pay rise. We need to hit the draft for progression purposes and Total Player Payment management.

We would love to maintain top end depth, but realistically Will and Paddy will remain stuck in the twos with a fit list. Carroll is coming big time and will be best 22 ready next season. Docherty did an admirable job in the middle late in the year and Williams is capable, along with pinch hitters like Fisher and the returning Cuningham. Philp and Kemp may get their chances in the middle and a clearly contracted Fogarty is excellent value in the twos. I am sure JSOS would love some midfield minutes if we discontinue his ruck relief. We also have a handful of very capable VFL mids to fill the gaps at the lower level.

We will have room to accommodate the development a young draftee mid or two, so there is a real element that this short term pain will be a win.

Think you’re underestimating Dow’s figure. $300-$400K as pick#3 that was signed up early, wouldn’t have been for peanuts. The silent 1yr extension is the query for whose benefit & where the dollars are situated I.e. back ended / smoothed out to assist with TPP perhaps & the balloon is 2023.

Setters $400-$450K & contract/s would be looking a lot less favourable hence the uncontracted position he’s in as we try & rebalance on his output.

Kramer1 Stamos 2.37 - no contract offered. (no 180k contract offered)
Just so I know I'm doing it right...we don't believe Austin when it doesn't support our argument but we take him verbatim when it does?

It may be Setterfield's management said they won't entertain anything under two years...it may be we've asked him to wait until after the trade period to see what's left...it may be a dozen different scenarios.

The truly naive thing would be to believe that list managers haggle like used car salesman...perhaps Dodoro aside. Via his management any interested party would know exactly what Setters status is. It serves zero purpose to obfuscate and make false claims through the media.

All of which is getting away from my origunal point of course...which is that it would be unfortunate to lose Setterfield for nix. His value as midfield depth is not easy to replace.

Just admit you were wrong and move on.

You clearly made an effort to argue Setterfield was being offered a contract and the only evidence to the contrary was Austin stating he was a required player - which is list manager lingo 101 at this time of year.

The club isn’t under oath when it comes to making blanket statements about players and their value to the club, but a direct question was answered, which Austin verified. There is no confusion about Setterfield’s current contract situation.

Maybe the club will offer Setterfield a one-year minimum contract if he doesn’t find a new club, but that isn’t the case at the moment and stating otherwise is head-in-the-sand stuff.

Err...you're the one that weighed in here...

I claimed Setters finished the year well, performed well in our biggest games, and is undeniably AFL quality. I also highlighted the multiple endorsements Austin has given him.

You've blustered and flustered over every point along the way.

Keep on spinnin man...

Nice white flag.

I’d be embarrassed too if I made some non-existent claim, doubled down on it, and later got found out.

Strange one. Think they reached for him at draft time & was talked up pre-season as the one to watch but didn’t crack a game.
Geez, 2018 draftee, thought he was younger than that.
Ely Smith had huge stats in his U18 champs and TAC in the strongest draft year of recent times. Injuries have stuffed him at times along the way since then but Lions midfield is just so hard to break into. I don’t know what his story was this year but he didn’t dominate VFL or anything.

We should replace Setters and/or Dow with kids anyway.

Yep, looked at the squad & thought the same. Plus DC can float through, Philp was drafted as a mid (both have a point of difference with pace) & Martin was being groomed in the midfield 1 pre-season. Then there’s also Ed + Fog.

+ Plow down back, if needed.
Yep we have plenty of diverse midfield depth options and moves we can make, even after cutting some fringe players.

Acres is straight in plus youngsters Philp, Carroll and possibly our pick 10 if a mid should be pushing for opportunities next year along with our existing options.

???

Embarrassed?

You've been patently wrong in most things you've raised...happy to gift you a win on semantics if it makes for a better day.

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet...

Unreal... Setters + pick 10 for pick 6... lmao as if he's gonna jump us up 4 places at the pointy end of the draft

It should be mandatory for every trade proposed that the poster should also propose an alternative with us on the other side. For example, would we trade pick 10 to Fremantle for pick 13 and Blake Acres, who would otherwise be available for a future 3rd?

It’s irrelevant whether it’s 20 or 24. He’s not super damaging with his disposals and doesn’t do a whole lot throughout the course of a game.

You can say he’s still improving, but he’s had similar games in the past and chucking up 25 as the second choice inside midfielder should be an expectation. Why are we amazed at 24 playing purely on ball he’s hitting those numbers? He was also concurrently playing for his career at that point - it’s fairly clear why he had a decent end to the year by his standards.

The realty it he’s been at the club 4 years. He’s going to be going into his 7th year next year and has been pretty uninspiring save a few decent games in 2020 and a decent couple of games at the end of this year while attempting to convince the list management team he’s worthy of a list spot for next year.

No idea why you’re going out of your way to compare but 28 in a final is substantially more impressive than 24 in a Home & Away game. Acres had been building to that kind of form throughout the year and played well during the season, while Setterfield’s mild performance patch was comparably tiny.

It’s bizarre that other teams supporters can accept their failing fringe players value, but we are completely clueless about this? When you’re in your mid 20’s and showed very little across your career your value depreciates rapidly.

Saw similar rhetoric with SPS last year. You cop a junk pick and move on.
7th year, but he's missed two to ACL injuries.
