Not sure about this one at all. I am a fan of Setterfield and he could be transformative to Essendon which makes it even worse, for much cheaper.

Don't know what we are hoping to achieve with pick 62.

But the new regime hasn't yet done enough wrong to warrant any criticism so I'll refrain and just hope Austin knows what he is doing.

Though this is reminiscent of us culling all our key position depth a couple of years ago.

We have 6 notable contracts to maintain and safeguard our elites, Weitering , Walsh, Cripps, Curnow, Mckay , Saad , the yoke around our necks is Williams , hopefully his impact & contribution to the team improves in 2023..
So that’s 7 heavy commitments, whilst smarting from Gov and Martin contracts fading quickly finally. Hope they impact much better in 2023 too.
So we need to be astute & copious with salary management , mid and fringe range players are on notice , list needs another significant clean out, as we can’t afford a big mediocre list , given our contractual obligations.

Matt Rendell reckons we could get a 2nd round pick for Setters
Good luck trying to prise that from Dodoro.

Stamos came up with a trade scenario on the main board that could work. * actually receive extra points for their bids on the Daveys, and we receive a pick upgrade. Of course the trick in dealing with ol' mate Dodoro is to make him think he's won the trade.

We currently have picks 66 and 68 so fairly unlikely we'd use both anyway.

Could be something like #42 for Setterfield + #49 + #66
Points wise (and then picks wise) is better for you than trading #62, but we actually get something.

Funny how some people can see a game in isolation, or a handful of games, as irrefutable evidence to contradict multiple seasons worth of evidence to the contrary.
Yeah-it’s an interesting point you make. My hope for setters and Dow was that they were just taking longer to come on. Those at the club will have a far better idea.

Ultimately, we want to keep him but he is getting a better offer elsewhere. Good luck to him then, I reckon the vast majority would do the same in his situation.

Setterfied cost what, two second rounders in 2018? Shocking value for the club.

Hey, we got O'Dwyer as well, don't undersell it...

We gave up a pick in the early 40s (2018), and a future second (2019), which did admittedly look like it would be #19, given that Bolton's win-loss over the previous 18 months was 3-30...

GWS on-traded both of those picks, so value is hard to trace. The 2018 pick ended up being #45 (Dogs) after the trade period, they took mature-ager Ben Cavarra, who played 4 games in 3 years before being delisted at the end of 2021.

The 2019 pick ended up being #26 (thanks to Teague), and in the hands of the Swans. They took Gould, who has not yet played, although he is still contracted for 2023.

The most tangible output of GWS's on-trades is the upgraded 2019 second-rounder (#24) they used on Hill, who has played 41 games en route to Collingwood. (I was surprised to learn it was so many; I watch a fair bit of GWS and hadn't noticed him that often!)

If there's a "winner" out of all this, it's still probably us at this stage, with 50+ games out of Setterfield. GWS could argue that Hill has earned them a usable draft pick from Collingwood, whereas Setterfield probably won't do the same for us... but it seems like a low-stakes contest at this stage.

Rendell also thinks the Crows have the most dangerous forward line in the league.
Haven't listened to any trade radio this year and feel much better for it...
Every other year, I'd listen all day every day...

Though have been on the road a lot and listen to SEN which is just as bad... :cryv1:
Only positive is Whaetley is on leave...

Super sleuth! Interesting read. Cheers

All of which is getting away from my origunal point of course...which is that it would be unfortunate to lose Setterfield for nix. His value as midfield depth is not easy to replace
I think that's the issue atm.. With us, he is midfield depth. At Essendon, he probably starts in the middle.
Can't begrudge a footballer for wanting to football I suppose.

Great summary, B - think I might have been conflating this one with the McGovern trade

If it means the likes of Carroll/Kemp etc (even if they play a different position of sorts) get more game time in the seniors next year, I am pretty comfortable with Setters moving on
I like him, a good honest foot solider, but felt like he wasn't ever going to take his game to the next level.

I am still all in for giving more kids more quality and significant game time in our evolving list and game plan.

Oh for sure...and I'm not over thinking Setters value either. Good ordinary footballer...maybe scope for more. At 24 he needs opportunity.

I'm a bit...let's say alert not alarmed, with where we are at though. Jettisoned/jettisoning a fair whack of once highly rated youth, and exposing the next layer. We're banking on a reasonable amount of internal development, which to be fair, we've just never seen.

Plus we've lost a bit of ground to the Cats/Lions/Tigers and possibly Dees...at least on paper.

Reassure me dammit...

We catch up a lot of ground if we have some luck with injuries.

We're not as far behind as what it appears. In some ways I think we're ahead.

You can't bank entirely on health but surely we can be hopeful that it won't be that bad again
