I suspect Essendon are just about to offer him very large pay rise.
Let's be realistic.
Who else do they have to pay?
They must have a stack of free cap space.
So no way we could match that

Shiel is on a trashload. You’d assume they lose Heppell at least though

Yeah I have always liked Heppell as a player

Also think Essendons recent recruiting hasn't been bad.

Yeah haven’t paid too much attention but they got Wright for a packet of chips

I think we should be following the GWS fwds a little bit.

Cadman, Himmelberg, Hogan, Derksen and Riccardi can't all play together.
There is an argument that we should have been trading with GWS since their inception. However, I suspect the AFL ‘you can’t have everyone’ rule has made that impossible.

I've been been into big time Marshall since his Draft year.
Pretty sure he's from Albury.

That's right - he's a NSW boy and that's one reason why I've suggested him.

(I thought he was from Deniliquin and I just checked and that's right. Played TAC Cup for Murray Bushrangers.)

I’m pretty sure the name Paddy will be very much in the running. Assuming he has another successful (concussion free) year in defence.
I think you and I are the only two on here thats thinks this is a chance..
when you consider
  • Buddy is a 99% chance of retiring & Reid is a good chance of retiring
  • Logan needs support from a mature big man up forward.
  • Quality KPFs are very expensive (both picks and $$) to trade and take years to develop from the draft
We're in the window now. We have a former p1 KPF in Paddy already on the list. I reckon if there was a worry about his concussion, he wouldn't be playing footy. We know he can read the play, is a good mark and and a good kick, which gives me confidence that Paddy can be a very good KPF.
I also reckon that 2 x McCartin make our back 6 a bit slow (just my opinion).
If Paddy moves forward, that opens up an intercepting role for Blakey (creating an opening on half back - theres a few could fill that role) or Francis or Gould.

A lot will depend on the development of players like Francis, Gould, Edwards down back.. and Amartey, Mclean up forward. Also who we may trade.

Interesting times to watch the final pieces of our list build

Does anyone think that we might trade out Stephens?
He would get us a good pick. Kinnear suggested last trade period that we will be more active in '23. There are plenty of young crew looking for a game on the wing, the Swans bat deep with outside players.
I guess how much other clubs offer him will be a factor,, also what our trade plans might be?

Personally want him to stay.. and would be very happy picking up Himmelberg as a free agent, taking picks 18 & 19 to the draft and then drafting Cabor and Cleary from the academy

No. He's just locked in his spot in the team, why cash out now.

Because some people believe that picks are more valuable than established players.

Hint: These people are morons.

We paid Pick 5 for him anyway. It'd be stupid to trade him for less at this point, and nobody would offer more

Reid and Buddy gone.
Rampe plays taller than he actually is.
I just don't see Paddy making it as a key fwd.
I don't see McLean or Amartey making it although I think Amartey is still a chance.

Overall I think we need to recruit another tall KPP.

We haven't made any effort to Draft a KPP in the last two drafts so we now have absolutely no choice but to try and bring one in from another club which means paying big bucks.

I think a KPF is necessary next draft (or trade). Buddy and Reid will be gone (and Hick but that's not too relevant), and imo Amartey will be delisted. That leaves us just McLean, McDonald, with the only 3rd option being a resting ruck. That could work but we'd be better with a Fwd/Ruck like Reid than a Ruck/Fwd like Owen. Also even if it does work, we can't just have no KPF developing at VFL level, we'll get stomped. I haven't looked a lot into the 2023 draft class but I know there's always some tall ****ers in the late first round.

KPD can wait, the law firm are 23 & 26 plus there's Francis, Gould, and Edwards (and one more year of Melican).

Still remember him saying in an SEN interview last year that he doesn't want to go anywhere at the moment. Loving Sydney and his teammates around him, the culture is strong. Maybe he'll head off down the track when he becomes a free agent, but he took some big steps last year. He is on the verge of taking his game up a notch this year if he can consistently rack up the footy. Him and J Mac are our main two wingers for the future, hopefully Juzzy gets his 2021 form back this season.

McInerney would be up for trade before Stephens. But there are 10 others I'd chop before either of them.
