Pretty exciting to think that after all the dark years we finally enter a Finals campaign with a team capable of winning it all - with 6 current and former All Australians (2 backs, 2 mids and 2 forwards) including the reigning Brownlow medalist and last two players to win the Coleman - plus another 3 players who have had All-Australian caliber seasons (Newman, Weitering and Cerra) - so that makes 9 of our starting 22 real weapons. And we also finally have role players including multiple rookies who do the tough things well and make the team overall a defence minded one.

The premiers are usually one of the top four teams for points against and we ultimately finished 4th but only 50 points first place (or 2 behinds per game over the entire season). In our last 10 games we were by far the best defence and one of the highest scoring teams too.

Given where we were after 13 games we should be excited. But if we don’t beat the Swans it would have been almost for nothing.

Haven’t been this excited for a game in a decade. It’s going to be a long week leading into the game but I’m enjoying the buzz around the traps and the fact we’re relevant again.

The ins seem fairly straightforward to me - Cripps, Doc, Mots and Pitto. Boyd deserves to be in the mix too. There’s naturally a bit of debate around including Pitto given his limitations but the way I see it we need to lean into our strength which is stoppage dominance. Pitto to grind down Hickey and TDK to jump over him late.

The harder part is the outs. I don’t envy our MC. There will be a few blokes who miss out that have been integral to our turn around.

Percy is now in the North Fitzroy Arms. Not far from the Brunswick St tram. Get off at St Vinnie's hospital and walk to the G via the Fitzroy Gardens.
I never knew where and why Percy Jones gained his nickname until I googled it recently.
Might have originated in the showers at Princes Park?

While I am concerned with Fisher's defensive strength, think these comments are a tad over the top

Most sides have an attacking HB, who is less defensive

You need to weigh up all players in the back 7 and while someone like Cincotta is there to primarily shut down an opponent and is stronger defensively, he does lose his opponent far too often

I think it's more of a toss up between Cincotta and Fisher, which will come down to the sum of all parts as a defensive 7

I have Cincotta just ahead based on the last outing, but have Fisher ahead over the last month

Cincotta is the bigger bodied player and skills not much worse than Fisher. If I had to choose Id take Cinc.

I reckon Vossy will be wanting to go back to our one wood which is our physicality, which I think especially against the swans we will need. As much as hollands and dow have been amazing I don’t think they will stand up under the finals pressure and aren’t physical enough so I believe they make way for Cripps and pittonet who will sharpen our contested game. Motlop for durdin seems pretty straight forward. I’d be dropping fisher also as I think his way too attacking and leaves us vulnerable on defence. I’d be putting doch back behind the ball and let him play the newman quarterback role and bite off the hard kicks. Newman to do a Greene type role and lockdown papley.I’d also be rotating Walsh out on hollands wing along with cottrell to use his class on the outside. I’d be bringing in Kennedy as well. Perfect player to play for us in finals; nor will swans be expecting it. his physical, got a good set of hands and can push forward and got a good mark overhead. Coin toss between cunners and Fogarty for this one but I think Fogartys pressure just pips cunners as point of difference on the ball.

In: Cripps docherty pitt Motlop Kennedy
Out: durdin fisher dow cunners hollands

B: newman weiters McGovern
Doch Kemp saad
Walsh Cripps acres
Martin McKay Fogarty
TDK curnow owies
Pitt Cerra hewett
Motlop Kennedy cottrell cincotta

See you all at the G next Friday

as strong a 5th post as I can recall.........

I would roll the dice on Boyd runs straight hard and fast and kicks long.Has the speed to close space down allowing Saad a bit more freedom. He’s also hard and uncompromising in the contest. He is a quick decision maker I feel it’s a roll of the dice because he may not perform as well this game but will be better the further we go.
I won’t be unhappy with other options just gut feel
