Oh dear. You don't have "ongoing discussions" in that situation without the result being another contract. Well, just have to hope it's one year, minimum chips, and it's made very clear that he's depth (and the selectors live up to that).
- I mean, it's possible he's better next year, with more time since the ACL, but... I'm not as down on Sloane as some, but it's the taking a spot on the field that could be used for more player development that is the issue.

Minimal abseentism, hasn’t blown million$ on stupid side hustles, destroyed player culture, called members customers or agitators or blown 2 years of draft picks, so not the highest of bars.

I think he was 24 or 25 at that stage, he'd had a couple of leaner seasons than his best but that was an incredibly ballsy call at the time. They knew Chad was after a big pay day in his FA year which they didn't want to get caught up by. Did the same thing with Polec too, knew he wanted a big contract on a decent year and they told him to look elsewhere.
If there is something I admire about Ports list strategy is they will always put club before player, we do it sometimes to be fair but not with the same ferocity. Their abilty to identify they couldn't get Luko or Rankine but could get Rozee and still have a pick around the mark to get Butters was top notch, credit where it is due.
We should have been better prepared that year, we could have got Rozee that year and still have Rankine now
Seems this spilled over into concussion treatment as well.

Basically, what I was thinking. That was a big year. The AFL helped GCS out again in draft help and putting Rankine and Luko in a hard-to-get category.
I appeared to most that we put all our eggs in the get Rankine or Luko basket and were trying to do a deal to make it happen. PA on the other hand knew reality and also realized Rozee as a more than capable pick and they had something to bargain with.
Not sure what we could have done but wasn't that the Sloane new contract year.
Probably don't need to panic about emergency recruiting a defender.

Let’s not forget after Borlase and Keane we basically have no one else. We’re playing our entire KP defensive depth. We have Murray out for likely all of next year and we’re already delisting McAsey. We needed another KPD regardless. It is urgent even though these boys have proven to be up to it.
Far out, we might have to upgrade Borlase to the senior list now

Murray won’t play next year and likely takes 18 months to get back to the level he’s played at. McAsey already needs replacing. We will get another one. No doubt about that.
Out of the box target, if Crouch leaves - Worpel
Having a cracker season with the Hawks, and is a similar kind of clearance player to Matt, would pair well with Dawson I think
