Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Traded in WA players and 4 have gone back. Hill, Acres, Lobb, Hogan. Honestly WA guys are more open then Vics. Don’t forget Logue too.
Years ago, back in the Connolly & Schwab days, the philosophy was that by drafting Vic players, if they ever went home we could get WA players going back the other way.

Never panned out that way. As I said before, Melbourne is the centre of gravity. WA boy plays for Vic club, meets Vic girl, she doesn't want to go back to Perth. Or on the off chance she does, she either gets bored or they have a kid and she wants to be closer to family. Or the players get bored themselves, or sick of the fishbowl (see Hogan being able to live anonymously in Western Sydney).

Vice versa almost every girl from Perth loves Melbourne and would follow her football playing partner there in a heartbeat.

The only sustainable way for us is the draft.

I am just not sure with Henry. He is still not fit enough to play the wing and not strong enough for HBF.

I think he's another summer away. I would keep him.

His best football is on the wing, he just needs to play with more intensity

I want it, but I just don't see Henry finding that Walters type intensity.

I make this comparison because I have seen both skilled players make mistakes ... Walters will then put his life on the line to repay for his failing, while I have seen Henry still show a lack of intensity at a time when he needs to find it most.

If only Son Son could Mr Miyagi Henry I would be happy.

Considering Freo have torched themselves in the draft, and they're likely to persist with Longmuir for the next few years.

Is it time to farm off Cox and get two 1st round picks, so that we're prepared to be up and about when Tassie enter the comp?

Two first round picks for Cox?
Not sure what galaxy that is happening in but it’s certainly not ours.
I would say that Cox is worth about pick 15 in a trade.
Also - we would be dealing with Adelaide and port Adelaide.
Two clubs that have consistently been difficult to deal with in trades and have reamed us on numerous occasions in picks swaps in the recent past.
I’ll put it this way - if Adelaide were only willing to give the swans pick 18 for Jordan Dawson, what on earth do you think they would offer us for Cox?
I actually think we would do well to even get their first pick involved in any trade TBH.

Dawson was ooc and could’ve been picked up by Adelaide in the psd for nothing.

Not saying cox is worth anywhere close to two first rounders but it’s really not comparable to Dawson situation

Only know of one club silly enough to do that , And that club already has Cox

Ryan Daniels is right we need to focus on retention. Flicking off players for more draft picks is just stupidity.

Our issue this year is too many changes - 4 (Mundy, Acres, Lobb, Logue) that played best 22 and 2 solid depth (Tucker, Meek) and replaced with 2 regulars. Our 4 other replacements are either young inexperienced or depth (Corbett, Wagner).

We need to look at low cost trades to improve our depth and try to improve our draft hand.

We can take a leaf out of Melbourne’s book to improve Draft hand.

Some examples:
1. North second and F2 > pick 13-15 and later pick
2. Henry and Carlton 3rd (or F3) > pick around 29-33 (Henry would need to show a bit more in WAFL and AFL before end of season)
3. North 3rd and Carlton 3rd > 2nd round pick (with a club that needs points)

F1 should be off the table.

Could end up with something like:
14, 28, 38 and add a couple of decent depth players if we get clever.

Or skip 1 and just do 2/3 (with a Future involved for 2):
22, 29, 33
