Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Priority picks in general really make no sense. Team has been bottom 3 for years in a row, meaning they have access to top 3 players of the draft every year and they're still s**t. So let's give them even more access to the top 3 players every year because that will definitely make them less s**t.

Teams don't need priority picks they need better list managers

Pick #1 that they have to trade will be a wonderful way to stick it to Hawthorn and WC if they are tanking, then a team like Essendon trade a couple of players to North for pick #1, add the best talent and move on.
They would never ever give a team pick one as a PP and add a condition that they have to trade it. Not in a million years.
Especially this year where there seems to be an obvious pick 1. The AFL want that player to go to one of the 3 weak clubs.

I think there is no chance north get a priority pick 1. They might well finish 3rd last anyway.

Although that might tend to favour the bigger clubs with more resources, as they have a greater ability to sidestep the system and provide additional infrastructure to their list management team.

Cue the idea of a floating salary cap that factors in recent success, local player market size, F/S advantages etc etc. This could allow trading in more established talent to support the young talent coming in (and increased mobility for trading their additional picks).

It certainy makes no sense if they're just used to pick kids. If the problem is short term competitiveness, then they need mature age players, not kids.

If they do gift out PPs it only makes sense if they have to trade them for players, otherwise they lose the pick.

The kind of support I think clubs could get would include;
  • 2 senior players salaries outside the salary cap and outside the main list.
  • increase in the club's soft cap, targeted towards coaching and player development.
  • AFL to make available a fund for coach mentoring for rookie coaches.
  • for non Victorian clubs support for player development from their recruiting zones including additional rookie list positions

Any Carlton players we could target? Thier cap must be maxed out and if they miss/just make finals, they might go stupid and target some new players. Potentially squeezing a few out. Maybe they'll offer us a 1st for Henry?😂

It's also possible that North get nothing and then cease to exist when Tasmania comes online.

So start thinking if any of their current players would look good in our side from end of 2027...
In an ideal AFL world, it'd be new clubs only enter via dead man's boots. And that dead man should be from Victoria, given the unhealthy concentration of clubs there.

Never mind a new stadium, the task for Tassie to get a licence should've been to either successfully prosecute the case a Vic club be ejected or convince one to relocate there.

So you are saying this is an Afl plot to make Alastair Clarkson the first coach of The Tassie Roos.

I wouldn't say that, I think the next coach of the Roos might be their final coach at AFL level if their performances don't turn around drastically. I wouldn't expect Clarkson to last three seasons of winning once every ten games.

Just a question, if another team drafts your NGA player, why don’t the team that picks them swaps the equivalent points to the team affected. Eg if player A is picked at 10 by team B and is the NGA player of team A who’s next pick is at pick 16, team B gives team A the difference between pick 10 and pick 16 (328 points -about pick 46) as compensation? This Or something similar for NGA picks taking under 40. Above 40 the NGA can match as normal

A North Melbourne/Tassie merger makes a lot of sense.
The Tasmania team has to be a completely seperate entity imo however 'merging' North with another struggling Victorian club at the same time they're brought in would make sense imo.

It's be like the Brisbane/Fitzroy merger which only saw eight Fitzroy players go to Brisbane. In this case 7-8 go to the Victorian side so the two sides are 'merged'. The rest of North's list would be tradeable for Tasmania or could be placed on their list.

Tasmania would have it's VFL team from the season prior that has a bunch of AFL talents added to it end of 2027 with draft and trade - including the surplus North Melbourne free agents (the entire team to pick from) so even though six to eight of the Roos end up in Tasmania most just become spare talent for the rest of the competition as a compensation for the draft being compromised.

I wouldn't need Tasmania to have rights to those North players to trade them.

I was thinking more about what you'd do with players contracted to North Melbourne that are likely to sue the AFL.

I'd rather have Tasmania trade these guys to clubs they want to play for than have them join other clubs as DFAs.

North will be back in the finals by 2027. They have heaps of elite young talent despite how shit they are right now.
Potentially adding Harley Reid to that too this year.
I think it’s zero chance they will be folded.
If they can keep Ben Mckay it will be a decent side soon enough.
I would take their list any day over hawthorn and WC.

That’s 11 players that should be good solid AFL level players soon.

Then there is George Wardlaw and brayden George both highly touted that we haven’t seen yet. Paul Curtis as another young player I’ve liked the look of.

Plus all of this years draft picks including possibly Harley Reid.
They only need 3 or 4 of the guys to become guns to rise quickly. We have seen it before with Melbourne demons.

I hope they get Reid, I can't stand the thought of him at Eagles.

It's a hard field to plow though. Carlton's list was full of talent and high draft picks in 2019 too. Still have the splutters four years down the track.

Interesting take by some Eagles that if North get a priory pick due to their poor record over the last 3 years , maybe they should as well.
My question is isn't the Eagles predicament due to Covid, injuries and just plain bad luck ?
And their list at the start of the year was good enough to make the 8 according to many of them.

This time last year the Eagles won a flag three years more recently than we had played finals. It's one year on from there, it took the better part of a decade of missing the finals for Freo to turn it around and we got NOTHING from the AFL for it.

The Eagles won a flag in 2018. They played finals in 2019 and 2020.

They've got until at least 2027 of not playing finals until they should be getting any AFL assistance.
