Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Anyone else think we need a left footed midfielder?

Darcy our only one right now but so slow to get it to the boot that it doesn't really work

Noddy could theoretically go inside but I'm worried about him hitting his foot with that ball drop in traffic

Re the Yeo discussion here, apart from the stuff everyone else has touched on particularly about injuries, I feel like salary would make it difficult to get done. Looking at what Freo are doing with their extensions this year where seemingly every contract is a year or 2 longer than you'd think it should be, I can't help but feel that we're trying to save cap space to make a big move either this trade period or the next. Even on a reduced salary, idk if we commit to Yeo when Erasmus and Johnson for me are showing that they can be the big bodied mids of the future if they can get on the Nat Fyfe diet.

Apart from that, feel like Freo need to address depth issues. You look at the list past like the 30th man this season and it's guys who we either know aren't good enough or can't tell if they're good enough or not coz of limited opportunities.

Davies, Wilson, Emmett, Corbett, Hamling, Knobel, Colyer, Wagner, Draper, Benning, Worner, Reidy, Kuek, Williams, Stanley. Some of those are legit projects that Freo are right to commit to (Worner and Kuek have improved loads in their time here, and Stanley has an exciting combo of attributes). But these projects are undermined when they're surrounded by guys that can't threaten for spots when others in the team are in bad form. That's not even including guys in that top 30 who shouldn't be in the top 30 of a good team.

For the NBA fans here, feel like the issues with this team are comparable to those with my team last season, the Warriors (yes I'm a bandwagon fan, deal with it). When they won the ring in 2022 they had guys like Otto Porter Jr, Bjelica, GPII, a less broken Iguodala, hell even donkeys like Damion Lee and JTA that brought energy and gave it everything they had. Next year, that was replaced by rookies like PBJ and Rollins that contributed nothing, an Iggy that would break after every dunk attempt, and JaMychal Green (Donte was alright tho). That downgrade in depth + locker room issues took them from a championship team that got the 3rd seed with Steph, Klay and Draymond playing like 1 game together to a 6th seed that was a generational Steph game 7 away from losing in the first round to the Kings. Likewise, we've lost depth and don't quite know how to deal with it, even with a relatively clean bill of health (at least until last week when the injury gods rained fury on us).

Wouldn't mind Reece Torrent for a later pick. Plays hb, hf, wing. Excellent left foot skills.

That's why it doesn't make any sense unless they acknowledge his body is fully cooked

They could just pay him to lead the WAFL side at that point, they certainly aren't giving up picks, they'd only trade him for picks
They don't need cap space yet, they're gonna have like 15 or more players in their first or 2nd years where they are capped at a base contract.

Clubs don't do well when club champions are dominating the WAFL and the AFL side is getting spanked, then cutting the champion from the squad when his contract ends.

That's very bad for business. The Eagles will be in public relations mode for years.

Had a quick look at draft boards and a few have the Dees taking Nick Watson with our pick (small forward)

I'm sure that'll go down well with some on here haha
Watson is the exact sort of gun small forward we would want. Like Rankine or Rachelle but shorter so should slip a bit.

Tore WA to bits.

He is literally 170 cm. Small forwards are right in the thick of it so I don't see how it would work. Moir is my favourite small forward of the draft.

To add to the Yeo discussion, lets take Obeanie1's surprisingly reasonable trade price and look at risk / reward.
  • The general consensus regardless of what you think about the list is we have too many roleplayers
  • Yeo is a-grade if on the park
  • The vast majority of talent you get after pick like 45 (future 3rd for us with academies and what not every year) is a role player at best. Dont come at me with Darcy / Cox, calls, there is like 1-2 players drafted after pick 40 every year that are close to anything b-grade and above.

If we actually pay like 350k salary, are we more likely to get the higher level talent with a pick 45 or get Yeo on the park? I'll back Merriman to get make that an easy risk/reward choice
But what length would he have to sign him for? I reckon he’d look for a 3 year deal. To me that would be too much. He’s definitely not coming for less than 2

To be fair I think both can hit that target but it will be 2-3 years away with all going well.
Our best crumbing small forward after Walters is called Jye Amiss though and that’s a problem
I highest I see treacy is a 20 to 30 goal forward. Solid b grader.

Jackson lacks forward craft. I think he could be good on the wing, ruck position. But I doubt him as a forward.

I see Jackson very different tbh. For a guy that lacks forward craft he certainly seems to kick a lot of goals… especially when he’s spending 20-30% of the game playing as a ruck.

Has improved massively as a forward since last year.

Yep. He’s going at better than a goal a game this season, is only 21 and it’s his first year with us, and he’d have the best or 2nd best KPD on him each week.

He’s easily got 30 goals in him, and 40 in a couple of years - if he plays mostly forward.

Also Eagles trading players to Freo and vice versa won’t happen at least until WA3 comes into the competition. The virtually one-off rivalry is virtually unmatched throughout the competition except in South Australia. Each team has temporary rivalries which come and go but only one is ever consistent for the WA sides.

It’s like Liverpool transferring a player to Everton or Arsenal to Spurs in the Premier League.

I’m choosing to immediately forget any suggestion of trades between the two clubs tbh. It won’t happen.

Unfortunately both teams are 'cutting off their noses to spite their faces'.

We have handicapped ourselves and are handing yet another advantage to the Eastern sides who have no qualms about trading with each other.

And given players are reluctant to even consider a move West we really aren't acting professionally and letting emotion affect logical decisions.

It’s as much to do with the players as the clubs imo.

If you were to go from one club to the other you better be good straight away otherwise you’re public enemy no. 1 for both sets of fans and therefore the majority of WA.

As we saw for Dixon and Strnadica or the players that’ve recently transferred from Adelaide to Port no one really gives a **** if it’s an average player but players like Ballantyne, Yeo or Darling would have a target on their back from day one unless they performed really well.

I agree with what you're saying but Yeo? Mate come on.

Tim Kelly is the only one we should really be after but that's precisely why the Eagles won't let him go (especially not for a reasonable price) - he's not ****, washed up or broken.
