Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

For him to earn his money as a forward who rucks a bit, he needs to match or beat Charlie.

Agree, he could improve like Hawkins but I think that is unlikely. Happy to be wrong.

At the same age Charlie Dixon and Luke Jackson AFL Stats Comparison

The first year Charlie averaged above 1.1.

Charlie Dixon is such an important player for Port that they fall over when he isn't there for the long kick down the line.

Go figure huh

FWIW I think we have all pieces required to contend, too many of them are just too young right now, we’ve really missed Chapman this year, NOD has regressed and young has plateaued somewhat (perhaps being elevated to the leadership team too soon has affected him). Not sure what Cory has done to Brodie, but having 2022 Brodie back would solve a lot of our issues.
Switowski and Schultz have had a horrible last month (longer for Switowski) and Frederick is disrupted by injuries.
Once Johnson and Erasmus bulk up a bit and get to 50 games, we’ll have a much more cohesive group.
It’s never as good or as bad as it seems. I reckon we will win against Sydney this week.

Nah. Serong and Brayshaw are in there as well. they need to be held accountable. Maybe JOM is suffering because they are in there with him. Amazing how those two escape any criticism when our midfield often gets smashed when they are in there. We need to spend the next 6 weeks plus the preseason finding out who are genuinely the best in there and not just carry on with these failing preconceived ideas. If they turn out to be the best, great but looking at how we performed when Erasmus was in there and how well JOM and Aish did for 3 quarters, it may not be.
It's pretty obvious teams saw what Collingwood did to our midfield in the final last year and used it as a blueprint to beat us this year. Just about every mature big bodied midfield has beaten us when we have gone in with Brayshaw, Serong and Jaeger.
I think one of the reasons we are getting smashed in the midfield is because we don't have a midfield bull. It is laughable that we expect Brayshaw (185 cm), JOM (184 cm) and Serong (180 cm) to play that role. Brodie is literally that midfield bull we are missing. He should be prioritized ahead of JOM and Fyfe. Brodie can work on his other deficiencies in game.

Our midfield coaching is another issue. Look at our setup and ball movement around the contest...

Agree I think they get JOM training out on a wing in the summer. Brodie needs to be inside

JOM doesn't have the tank nor the speed. He could be a decent half forward though.
Nah JOM is the 'cherry on top' for the midfield and belongs in there but we can't leave Brodie out any longer. He is a clearence beast and will make a big difference. We can move one of the younger players like Ras to half forward or Brashaw to a wing which more suits his abilities.

Also Eagles trading players to Freo and vice versa won’t happen at least until WA3 comes into the competition. The virtually one-off rivalry is virtually unmatched throughout the competition except in South Australia. Each team has temporary rivalries which come and go but only one is ever consistent for the WA sides.

It’s like Liverpool transferring a player to Everton or Arsenal to Spurs in the Premier League.

I’m choosing to immediately forget any suggestion of trades between the two clubs tbh. It won’t happen.

The 2 teams would be really reluctant to trade a 22-23 year old to their neighbour in case he becomes a star. But if The Eagles traded Yeo to Freo and he goes on to play 40 pretty good games with Freo while the Eagles are rebuilding does it really matter? They need to get their older players on good $$$ off their books ASAP.

Mark Duffield said today freo should try young or Chapman in the midfield. Don’t hate it

In 2024 Erasmus and Johnson will have another summer under their belt and hopefully another 3 or 4 kilos added to their frame. Throw in a fit Fyfe and Brodie and the small midfield is hopefully just a 2023 problem.

We still needed to bring Mundy in last year, along with Brodie to stem the bleeding that occurred regularly, so just Brodie with Serong and Brayshaw probably isn't the answer either. It worked ok with Aish, JOM and Brayshaw in the first quarter, but then it fell away badly in the second. I would love to know why it went so wrong. But then we added Erasmus in the second half, and threw in Switta at times. Erasmus worked well and Switta played his best football for the game in that period and we pretty much matched Collywobbles from then.
Brayshaw is a good half forward and wing and would have more chance to use his running strength without his weakness being so exposed and being ground down against big bodies and tags all the time. What I don't understand is why it is so important to people that Brayshaw and Serong are in there at all. Why can't we just find what works best and take it from there.

Not really worried too much if we draft Clay Hall.
Kid is already 188cm and 85kg.
Turned 18 in May.
Inside/outside player and right under our noses.

Brodie needs to have some more accountability for his opponent.
Yes he does but that's not a good enough reason to leave him out imo. He was a huge reason why our midfield was dominant last year and allowed Brashaw to play to his strengths. Playing Ras in the side would make up for any short term defensive deficiencies.

I honestly can’t see why the midfield isn’t a strength?
We have a good ruck, and players to rotate if we desire.
To me it looks like a lack of vision to
spread the load.
JOM, Brayshaw and Serong is too much of the same.

We are getting physically bullied inside and outside.

And when we don't win clearances we have zero plan B. We don't seem to score well off turnover.

I am not overly confident Fyfe can come back from all his injury issues.

Has been a great player but looks a bit lost out there now and a mere shadow of his former self.

It's time to plan for life after Fyfe and take anything he can add over the next two years as a bonus.

Yeo is even more injury effected than Fyfe so just leave him at the Egos.

I agree but that appears to be a coaching issue at first, then injury or lack of depth second.
The lack of games to Erasmus, Brodie
Banfield dropped but was drafted as
an on baller.
Pre-season we never worked on contested ball, it was all on our terms.

I’m a big fan of Brayshaw and Serong but they are not true game breakers I don’t think, compared to the very very top mids in the game. To me, in a flag winning midfield they are great second or third bananas. There needs to be another big alpha dog in there to be the number one midfielder. Serong and Brayshaw are kinda like Jack Viney or Shane Edwards or cam Guthrie or Jack Mcrae. That’s three or four flag winning kids from recent premiers. Lots of all Australian awards between them.
But your Bontompelli, Fyfe, Martin, Dangerfield Petracca types are the ones that get you across the line on grand final day.
Of course we still have Fyfe but he’s a pale shadow of the real Nathan Fyfe.
One of MJ or Ras could become that player but not for 4-5 years. Or maybe Heath Chapman??
I think AB and Serong are slightly limited by their size and lack of goal scoring threat. This isn’t a criticism of either guy BTW. People like Viney and Mcrae are top top players.

Last year opposition clubs targeted Mundy's opponent and we made the most of that by him putting the ball onto the likes of Brodie to clear.

This year Brodie's man was the one they targeted for the clearing ball, letting him get lured to the contest then passing straight to his opponent who let him go.

See Brisbane game for expert tearing us up this way
