Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Think its the only way forward trading. Cant keep bringing in kids when your close to the window

We aren't really close to the window though. Likely to be 3 and even 5 years away as we need 50-100 games into Amiss and other youngsters on the sidelines. Kids we draft now can still contribute.

And even if you want to go to trading, we have given away valuable currency. Lots of us on here did not want to give up our 2023 1st for Jackson. Whether he turns into the messiah or not is irrelevant. He was an uncontracted and unproven player and you shouldn't pay top dollar. Better performed players have been traded for far less.

Yeah that's the glaring terror with Jackson if he doesn't become the player we think he will, not that we traded for him per se, just the price in draft and cap capital we paid.

Hogan and now Jackson. Kerry Packer famously said when Alan Bond paid him a million bucks for Channel Nine and subsequently it turned out it was worth about a quarter of that "you only get one Alan Bond in your lifetime". Melbourne might just have got more than one Fremantle in their lifetime.

Carr was the coach when our midfield got wiped out last year. Our defence made our mids look ok last year. Bit more leaky this year. Our structure around the ball is a fair bit worse this year though.
Oh yeah agree, it wasn’t perfect last year but this year is something else. If we could have broken even in centre clearance stats we would have won last night. Would, should, could of course. I grasping at straws trying to understand what my eyes have shown me the last fortnight!😳

Rotation with O'Meara better IMO.
I’d be happy with this setup actually. Much rather see JOM lining up a set shot that Switta that’s for sure. I live Switta but he’s completely unreliable kicking for goal.
We actually look most effective when Darcy rucks and Jackson roves - this should be our centre bounce setup, get Jackson to barrel around and smash players in close, also gives Darcy time to move in. Jackson is mobile enough to get to where he needs to be from there.

This whole period smacks of something not working as planned, and now we're struggling to fit the pieces together whilst maintaining our balance and structures, which in turn has impacted the players' knowledge of where they know (or trust) their teammates will be - the latter allows for fast fluid play, and without it, well just watch our last two games.

To quote Ross - "It's never as bad... etc", and a few posters have been bang on; Jackson isn't a million miles away, Darcy neither. If only those two (let alone the rest of the team) had held 50% of their marks, we win both games. In a way it's good they didn't as it highlights the structural issues we've created with the trade and repositioning of players. This is going to take a while to fix, but it is fixable. We're also a young team, and I think Ras and Johnson solve our 'too small' mid-problem over the next season or so. Honestly still think we're in OK shape for a 2025 run. This year's going to be painful though by the looks.
I agree to an extent but what is clear that Jackson and Darcy, as used the last 2 weekends, does not work.
Can LJ be our midfield bull until someone else develops or Fyfe goes back in there (unlikely)?
Our other kids are all too small or too light (Brodie), we have no big powerful mid like the top sides all do.

Lobb Ben King* Pickett*
Weller Hogan Crozier
Landgon Cerra Acres
Hill Logue Tucker
Blakely Collins Rivers*
Meek Neale Mccluggage*

That's the team of players we have traded away, including a couple drafts picks we traded away for McCarthy, Hogan and pick upgrade to get Henry.
That side alone would be competitive, without adding in 3-4 draft picks each year. Eg Players like Darcy, Serrong, Pearce Walters, fyfe etc

Nick Larkey was taken with pick 73 in the 2016 ND and has played 75 games and kicked 130 goals. Mitch Lewis was pick 75 in the same draft.
They were in the same stage back in 2019 As Josh Treacy is now and we’re both fringe players in the AFL then.
Both sets of fans have had frustrations with these guys but their clubs pushed through and both paid the 50 game development tax an a key forward. Either would easily be the number one KPF at Fremantle right now.
So all is not lost Joao when it comes to not having a first round pick next year.
However you have to play the likes of Amiss and Treacy for decent spells to accelerate their development IN THE AFL. There simply is no other way. Peel is not the answer.

Who would we have picked in the draft at the pick we handed Melbourne and who could we get this season as we currently stand?

We need to be patient with Jackson but handing over high draft picks and a bundle of money has never worked for Freo.

I have a feeling we'll miss a very good player in this year's draft.

Melbourne took Jefferson, a 195cm KPF. We could have taken him or Ed Allan.

This year there is Koltyn Tholstrup from Subiaco who I am very keen on. Explosive 188cm goal kicking forward who can play mid. A bit like De Goey or Heeney.

A terribly weak decision to get bent over in the Jackson trade.

It is definitely worse this year. Softer and even worse positionally.
I think the same about at the drop of the ball when we are forced up the line. If we could just win our share we would be a better team. We don't , never have anyone out the back of the contest and the opposition set up from back there all the time. I'm shocked we get so close to winning in some games tbh.

I agree
I'm happy to get Jackson but as he was out of contract why get bent over.

We really need a first round pick this year.

Unless we trade someone out we are looking at pick 25 or so being our first selection. But if the season goes as bad as it looks so far, we will need to move some players on for picks I reckon.

If they even have currency

Serious question - do people think Frederick will still be B22 in 12-24 months?

He has barely improved as a footballer since debut.

Being athletic and disciplined isn't enough.

Trading players out is not the solution. We have to move away from a culture of trying to trade our way to prosperity.
Unfortunately, its going to take 4-5 years to recover from the diabolically atrocious list management decisions made last year.
If we stick to avoiding trading 1st rnd draft picks and focus on developing the players on our list, we will be a better club for the next 30 years than we have been in the first 30.

100% correct.

If Treacy and Amiss don't develop we are truly ****ed, and the only way to do that is have them work through the good and the bad at AFL level. Sturt probably likewise.

You just have to cop the games where they don't get near it, like we did with Tabs early on.

Well he kind of has to otherwise that's another forward we need to go and find!

Both those guys have 3 and a bit years of games in 6 (and a tiny bit) years. Just like Treacy and amiss they didn’t spend the whole time in the firsts.

larkey played 29 games in first 4 years. 27 of those in years 3 and 4.

Lewis played 22 in his first 4 years. 20 of those in years 3 and 4.

ie both played 2 games each total in their first 2 seasons. Amiss and Treacy already well ahead of that.

Yeah, for all our issues, we were right in both games. I guess it’s the basics that are the real problem. Marking the ball. Accurate goal kicking. Positioning around contests, taking responsibility to have a shot rather than handball off and having a small “front and centre“ every now and again.
Who knows maybe They have too much instruction and JL needs to keep it simple. 🤷‍♂️
