Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Trading players out is not the solution. We have to move away from a culture of trying to trade our way to prosperity.
Unfortunately, its going to take 4-5 years to recover from the diabolically atrocious list management decisions made last year.
If we stick to avoiding trading 1st rnd draft picks and focus on developing the players on our list, we will be a better club for the next 30 years than we have been in the first 30.
Why would it take 4-5 years to recover from last year when we have already had 4-5 years of high draft picks before that??

If anyone wants to know the two real reasons why our first 30 years have been not so good, we were bent over by the AFL on initial draft concessions and also recruiting other AFL players at the time and the other one was the "Gerard Neesham" experiment. Watch the documentary on Stan about the Dolphins, their first priority was to get Wayne Bennett as the coach.

We aren't really close to the window though. Likely to be 3 and even 5 years away as we need 50-100 games into Amiss and other youngsters on the sidelines. Kids we draft now can still contribute.

And even if you want to go to trading, we have given away valuable currency. Lots of us on here did not want to give up our 2023 1st for Jackson. Whether he turns into the messiah or not is irrelevant. He was an uncontracted and unproven player and you shouldn't pay top dollar. Better performed players have been traded for far less.
When do we forever stop being 3-5 years away though??

Serious question - do people think Frederick will still be B22 in 12-24 months?

He has barely improved as a footballer since debut.

Being athletic and disciplined isn't enough.
The main thing that worries me about Freddy is that he is not a good mark one on one.

His speed and kicking are obviously positives but he needs to improve his marking to be a good player and I’m not sure if and when that will happen.

His marking isn't great, but I do get annoyed when players see him running into space and isntead of kicking it forward for him to run on to they kick it so he has to wrap back around and try to take the mark 1v1.

I remember when he couldn't mark, fumbled every possession and couldn't kick straight at goal. He has improved quite a bit.

Ask the Pies what sort of condition he came back to training in.

I would have smoked him in the time trial. We are talking Newman? getting beaten by Worsfold bad shape.
10 marks and 4 goals in the vfl

Yeah, and considering the Pies may have put him in the "going through the motions until end of the season" he might be quite cheap.

It's what attitude he brings with him that will define him
The attitude I like most is 10 marks and 4 goals in the VFL

His improvement isn't enough or consistent. His marking is still a coin toss and he definitely still fumbles. He's a culprit of handing the ball over in the middle of the ground because he doesn't know how to play contests and ground balls. Not a very smart footballer. There comes a point where he can't rely on having every ball given to him on a golden platter.

Move Sean Darcy on for a first rounder, make Luke Jackson first ruck.
Throw everything at Logan McDonald.

This is classic Freo, always looking afar and never developing our own.
McDonald would have to seek us out
and as a forward who would want to play in that system?
We were doing ok with the draft, if we
trade him it’s because we have rucks developing at Peel.

Frederick just needs to learn to do one thing and he would be unstoppable.

When he's running back towards goal his opponent is going hell for leather just to go with him. All he needs to do is stop, prop and give a short little lead back towards to ball carrier.

Will catch the defender out 100% of the time

Yep was frustrating to watch during the game. Clearly they are being coached to do that.

JVR or Treacy: who do you prefer?

That's the kind of trade I would be open to, but I'd lean towards Treacy going into next season with an additional 15+ games under his belt.
JVR hasn’t kicked a ball at AFL level yet.
Exactly what we don’t need - another unproven Hail Mary trade because he is from Perth. If the guy was born in Warrnambool or leongatha he wouldnt even be mentioned in this board as a potential solution to our problems.
That alone tells us why we shouldn’t chase him.

We are screwed if Jackson doesn’t come on aren’t we? We won’t be going near a first round pick this year with our first pick linked to the improving North Melbournes 2nd round pick 😩
