Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Wont be a popular idea, but Waterman is out of contract this year.
At least push his price up for WC.
After what happened with Logue it will be interesting.
He is no superstar, and gets dropped first, but he is the right age.

Cox trained part time forward last year, but when it came to it we decided to throw griff there instead for some reason.

Had we switched it up last year we would still have Logue, and we could try it again this year.

But it’s just not feasible to do it now with no griff to back him up.

Hamling in, Cox to CHF

Do remember certain people screaming for that at the time but Cox himself shut it down. Why was he down forward on the weekend? Does not inspire confidence.

Sending our best mark forward in the last 5 minutes of the game to try and make something out of nothing is not a bad tactic. Almost paid off. Wouldn’t have happened if one of Darcy or Jackson could take a single mark all game

Not arguing against the tactic in isolation but then it's a massive backpedal what does it say for JLs confidence in his own gameplan? Not that he should have any because it's ****ing shit but this wish-washy approach is not how you lead teams to success.

It says that his game plan is useless if none of his other KPPs can’t be trusted to mark the ball.

All the talk of draft fails is tiresome really. We aren’t any worse than many other teams and better than plenty when it comes to recruitment via the draft in recent years especially. Collingwood have burnt some horrendous draft capital in the last few years but no one is talking about that now. They future traded a F1 that ended up pick 3 for christs sake!! Burnt picks on Dayne Beams. Gave away a pick 6 in Stephenson for nothing basically. Lost Ollie Henry for a second rounder after taking him with 18 and developing him for 2 years.
Over an 8-10 year period most AFL sides come out about the same in terms of draft success. Yeah we could have drafted more forward talent i suppose as it’s easier to fix a hole in defence at the end of a rebuild than in the forward line, but overall it wasn’t too bad.
What happens after the players arrive that decides the Success of the club. The development. The coaching. The buy in from the group.
That’s where we should be looking for answers.

Brereton was correct on the commentary. Our goals were all scrappy breaks. There was no system. We don’t kick “easy” goals. Ones that have a repeatable method to them. Even last year, at our very best, I didn’t get the sense we were tagging on nice handy goals at any stage.

The best teams all load up on this and are able to score quickly and heavily when the opportunity presents.

These two are utter rubbish.

Ben King was seen as a KPD at the time, not a forward.

We were never within reach of McDonald. Ever.

That's not true on King. Read his draft profile:

Clearly could have been drafted as a KPF for a team in need of one.

yeah it’s garbage.

I watched Ben King play a belting game out of the goal square against WA

Again with the 'pay the farm for the forward' thing. At this point by my count we are about 0 from like 5 or 6.

Seriously pick a year;
  • 2017 - I can get on board with the gamble for Cerra. But I'll just leave this here. Naughton
  • 2018 - trade out 6 and an R2 for Hogan, trade more first round stuff for Lobb (1 good year), Shultz is positive. Miss B King (at our pick and everyone knew he was going be good) and those port smalls.
  • 2019 - draft 3 mids, overpay on Henry, miss Georgiades (from our back yard)
  • 2020 - Ok draft for us but we started with a poor hand. (Thanks Henry). Prior to the points correction we were within range of MacDonald
  • 2021 - Yay finally a R1 forward. But wait, selection committee time and... he's too young and green to play last year or this year.
I mean, we NEVER had any access to Logan mcdonald. Not ever, at any stage was it realistic to draft him, regardless of the Henry matched bid or not.
We also couldn’t get Georgiades unless we gave up Serong or young. That wasn’t going to happen and rightly so.

The hawks put Will Day into the guts this year and he’s getting rave reviews.
Heath Chapman is quite similar to Day - is it time?

Last year, we got a few goals out the back. Other than that, and a few pack marks from Lobb we struggled.

Problem is not too many KPFs can consistently clunk pack marks. Put it to the slight advantage of any decent KPF and they'll probably mark more than the opposition does. Not sure I saw Lobb take too many pack marks tbh - one on one, yea sure but pack marks.

If our game plan is relying on pack marks we could have the best forward line in the league and we'd still suck

If we had key forwards who marked half the balls kicked to them we would be fine to lose the stoppage battle if we had a dominant half back line, which we do. Just like the Hawks, Eagles around 2010 to 2016. Couldn't win a contested ball to save their lives but had dominant half back and half forward marking power.

It's why if you found a player 250cm tall who could run 12km a game and mark half the ball kicked on their head they would be worth $1,500,000 a season.

Alternatively, you can win the midfield stoppage battle. Particularly in the bounce where numbers are even and you can be sure at least nine opposition players aren't clogging up the fifty.

Agree, it is a weakness in the game plan, that we need to find a solution to.

Moving the ball quicker, and then hitting targets when open would solve it.

We actually had 3 or 4 chances to hit an open forward, and missed them all.

All in on Logan Mcdonald this year!!! Gotta admit Im really starting to question if it is gameplan over Personel

The five things we are missing from last year in order from least to most important.

5. The dare. The running. The NOD factor. The confidence we had last year. Noddy has to come back in.
4. Hate to admit it but Lobb. He was a target and so far looks a lot better than Jackson. I know Lobb is on the way out and Jackson on the way up (hopefully) but Lobb took marks and kicked goals. And more than anything he was a target.
3. Acres. The all rounder. This is the one we should have kept. He ran hard forward and back. Big body who was a fierce contributor. We could have given him the extra $$$
2. David Mundy. Just one more year would have been great. Compare him to JOM. There is no comparison. His big body and experience were so valuable. And, what a piercing and accurate kick.
1. Josh Carr. The guy is a gun. His effect on Port will be profound. He will be their senior coach after Ken. Our coaching, our ability to think on the run, organise and reorganise and have a plan b has been our biggest weakness. Carr is a jet. The mids loved him. When things dont work you have to make changes. We only made changes in the last five minutes of our second game. That is wayyyy too late.

Morning rant, as someone who has always been keen on Jackson and who is certain he's going to play for us at a very good level for 10 years, the price we paid was absolutely ridiculous at the time, and looking even more ridiculous now. How in the **** we had to pay more on top of the two first round picks is beyond me and reeks of arrogance from Bell. Most realistic fans on here over preseason had us half a chance of sliding back a bit this year either through injury, tougher draw or just non-linear progression and so how the club got bullied into not getting some currency back from two firsts (per like every other trade), but actually doing a 2nd to 3rd round swap in Melbournes favour is ridiculous for an out of contract player

Im actually scared it will be the worst contract in the AFL right now and its only 2 games in 😵

JL is way too conservative. Throwing things around and bring innovative is worth a try.
