Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

You write, Arsesmart, with conviction and eloquence on this whole process/outcome folderol. And you very nearly convince me. Hearing the Pavliches, Fyfes and Longmuirs of the world, who must go to sleep to the soothing tones of corporate self-help audio books, I am amazed at how deeply soul-crushing pop-psych management lingo and thought has seeped into the world of footy. They're all at it. Stepping through the process.

* that noise. I don't want that kind of leader. I want freaks who just really, really hate losing and would rather cut off their arm than do so. I want scarily intense weirdoes who don't give a flying * about completing an MBA at Harvard. They just look at a dude, see what that dude is good at and then get that dude to do it over and over, for him, for them, for each other, for w-i-n-n-i-n-g.

Leigh Matthews used to tell the Brissie boys over and over how it's a simple game. He'd tell them it isn't rocket science so often that a few of them named their group racehorse Rocket Science in his honour.

And it is a simple game. A territorial game that is played over great distances but won within centimetres. By want or dare.

You give a bloke like Josh Treacy too much to think about and he no longer has his best and most compelling asset - instinct.

Longmuir was there in 2006 when Belly led the charge to junk all the frou-frou Connolly had built into their game plan. He has personal experience of how inhibiting too many things to think about can be. Maybe not for him. But I can guarantee Matty "Mean Feet" Taberner struggles with more directions than "up," "back" and "hold".

Put Erasmus in the middle - because all the corporate speakers currently in there are wonderful chaps but they are all too similarly paced and polite - and then just tell everyone to play the kind of footy they love to play. Do what you're good at.

Early rumours for the year I've heard, I dont pretend any of this is 100% or gospel just the word of mouth around places. The only thing I can promise on any of this is that I havent made any of this up out of thin air:
Pickett: Right in the hunt and we've got an offer comparable or better to others
Naughton: Target number 1 though for obvious reasons it's hard to see how it gets done this year. Several different people (randoms, not people in the club or Naughton family) think he's a lock either this year or next. He doesnt have a problem with current Freo and I'd personally have him the most likely of the names here but still at like sub 20% (ie, dont get your hopes up too high).
Georgiades: Lock to go to WC supposedly
English: WC priority number 1 and they are pretty confident
McDonald & Warner: Very very happy in Sydney and will be incredibly difficult to ever pry out

West coast would win the trade week if they get a English and Georgidas.
English will cost significant picks. About Jackson range if not more

I dont see Dogs letting him go in contract regardless but they are supposedly very confident in getting him this year or next.

too late, already guessing what jumper number he picks

I'd shrug my shoulders at Georgiadies. Been saying for a while he's Mitch McGovern 2.0.

So hopefully west coast offer him a juicy contract

It's really hard to convey the appropriate level of scepticism on these things haha. These rumours get floated around everywhere all the time and even if someone can be a lock, something can change to completely change the outcome. Hell, Naughton himself could look me in the eye and tell me he's joining Freo and it could be a blatant lie. The only thing I'm confident in is that Naughton has been a massive target for us for a while and he's a possibility. For contrast, I'd say English, Georgiades, McDonald and Warner are no chance now, or in the future.

Pickett or Naughton? The thought of either one of them excites me no end.
Would love to know how we're going to get the trade capital for it. We'd have to be losing at least one best 22 player minimum to pony up wouldn't we?

I think Pickett we'd have the capital for since he's out of contract. A future 1st plus/minus whatever depending on where we finish. Naughton I dont see how it's possible unless Darcy wants to leave (and he supposedly loves it here) or Treacy has figures it all between now and the end of the year

Treacy is steak knives value really. Darcy, Cox and for lesser value Schultz are the three best 22 players in the right age profile who's contracts are expiring by 2024 that other clubs would come after. If we got Pickett we wouldn't even remember who Lachie Schultz was 6 months later but the other two we simply can't afford to lose

Oh yeah, he's worth nothing at the moment, would need to be a best 22 lock and kick like 20-30 goals by the end of the season, then you're getting to the stage where he's worth a late first maybe (20 year old KPFs kicking 30 goals are pretty valuable normally) and you can get something done. All this really to say that yeah, borderline impossible for Naughton this year

If Treacy is kicking 20-30 goals by the end of the year why would we WANT to let him go?

If he is most likely but still at sub 20% than you are suggesting that Pickett/Naughton are both <20% chance of coming over i.e. realistically none of the names are a chance?

No arguments here, the ideal situation really is that Treacy comes on and we get Pickett, just spitballing on having close to enough currency for Naughton

My percentages dont mean much, I'm throwing darts on rumours that come up but just want to keep expectations realistic. Basically nothing is certain at this stage of the year with player movement and anything can happen between now and the end of the year. For comparison, I was always extremely confident on Jackson but would have had him at like 50% this time last year

Cox we must keep, but I don't think Darcy is in the same boat based on the current appearance of Jackson's forward ability. We shouldn't be spending a huge chunk of the salary cap on 2 x rucks. Jackson + Darcy versus Jackson + Naughton is a no-brainer in favour of the latter. I would have preferred Darcy + Naughton over both options, but the powers that be decided to go all-in with Jackson.

Yeah I get it it. My worry from now on is always going to be are we trading a like for like or giving away capital to import a name that could possibly end up being a dud? Our recent big name trades haven't always brought success with them. Meanwhile , we have to watch on as the like for like we just traded away with some draft picks goes on to win a Coleman 2 or 3 years down the track.

Probably being kind, our big name trades have always been terrible without fail BUT as dumb as it sounds, I dont think you can just give up on big name trades despite our history. Pretty much every successful club has spent top 10 currency on bringing in a key piece for their flag, it's an important piece of the puzzle, we've just got to be better at picking and choosing who we bring in

Definitely agree Darcy + Naughton is looking the best of the three options if we had the choice. I am not sure Jackson looks like he'll ever be a premium ruckman, Hugh Greenwood was holding his own against him. It seems what we have with him is the archetypal impact player who will never actually be elite in any one position. That's why we have to keep Darcy IMO.

You're right Snuff, I was being kind.

And you are right about the other stuff too. I didn't want to mention it so early on but I didn't really want Jackson, not because I didn't think he was good enough, I just didn't know where he fit.

And for the record, I still believe Hogan would have worked out. We traded the wrong forward and we did it too early.

Is it true that Henry and Kossie are close mates? I know Liam is close with some indigenous boys around the league
