Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Logan McDonald is out of contract in 2024.

Currently out of contract players at Fremantle in 2024 (I'm excluding all recent draftees):
Sean Darcy (RFA)
Brennan Cox (RFA)
Matt Taberner (UFA)
Sam Switkowski
Will Brodie
Nathan O'Driscoll
Ethan Hughes (UFA)
Brandon Walker
Bailey Banfield

I'm not expecting to lose any of that group, but that's the most likely place to draw trade currency from if you really wanted to buy McDonald.

I'm more interested in Jesse Motlop, Shai Bolton

* that. If Jackson doesn't work up front, play big Onions there. He had a bit of a mare with his mitts back half of last year, but when he does clunk them he's one of the best set-shots in the game.

Darcy's forward craft and goal kicking are really overstated on here.

He is purely a stand and try outmark a smaller player, works on mismatch but not really otherwise

His goal kicking is good for a ruckman but overall not that impressive

Taberner believe it or not is one of the best set shots in the league, atleast over the past 3 years

We literally just did it with Jackson on potential tho
They're not really the same. Jackson has won a rising star, had a high profile appearance in a GF and his performance as a player is at least AFL standard even if he is still mostly potential. Logan would be playing VFL if he had been a second round pick rather number 4.

Let's take a deep dive on this.

In 2022 he kicked 10 goals.

Round 4 - GWS - 1 goal - free kick in the ruck outside the goal square, set shot goal

Round 5 - Ess - 2 goals - handball receive from Walters, snaps goals/ball turned over at half forward, leads to the fifty arc from i50, marks (opposed to McGrath), set shot goal

Round 6 - Carl - 1 goal - long kick to one on one with 201cm Lewis Young, too big too strong, mark, set shot goal

Round 8 - Roos - 1 goal - on the lead, kick going over his head, backs up hard into Goldstein, marks over his head, set shot goal

Round 9 - Suns - 1 goal - ruck contest, outbodies Chol, snaps and goals

Round 11 - Melb - 1 goal - floating forward from the centre bounce, marks unopposed inside fifty, set shot goal

Round 17 - StK - 2 goals - collects the fumble at the back of the pack, snaps from the pocket goals/works hard forward to be loose i50, marks unopposed, setshot goal

Round 22 - WCE - 1 goal - leads from deep i50 to mark 35m out, Nic Nat 4m behind the uncontested mark, set shot goal

Yeah he isn't leading out of the square for marks much at all, like Fyfe he is most damaging working to be the extra headache. Switching between Jackson and Darcy will bring about more of this.

Darcy has more tricks than a man his size should, marks well above his head and is a good set shot. We should target him more.

He’s probably the best KPF his age in the league if not second or third.

Some people seem to think if KPFs aren’t the next Pavlich in their first two seasons they’re spuds and others think first or second year talls can’t contribute at all. The reality is somewhere in between for the best young KPFs. McDonald is one of those imo.
He’s come out of probably the worst draft since 2012 at this stage. Granted it’s only 2 years in but I’d argue Heath Chapman has strong claims to be no 1 in a redraft and while I love Chappy he’s hardly a “franchise” player yet.
Very underwhelming crop so far In 2020 draft.
I’d take all of The King brothers, Georgiades, Amiss, Sam Darcy, JUH, before Logan at this stage. Thilthorpe hasn’t shown much for a pick 2 either.
Agree that it’s early days and they dont come good till 5 years or so in general but you normally see flashes of brilliance like JUH cutting loose against the premiers in July and kicking 5.
Logan has shown flashes to be fair but a lot of underwhelming efforts too. He kicked 3 goals there one night this year in a televised game against Richmond maybe (can’t remember) and looked very good so the potential is there. His status as a pick 4 has afforded him an extra 15 or so AFL games in his career he would not have got if he was pick 24 instead.
My issue is that I think he would cost the same or close in draft capital as Ben king or luke jackson but would not be the same level of player.
It’s kinda catch 22 really. If he’s cheap after year 3 or 4 it means he’s not very good and more Josh Schache than Josh Kennedy.
If he’s actually good, then he will start to show it next year and will be out of our price range completely.
Can’t win really 😩

I think you should add Darcy Fogerty into that list.
But it’s taken 4 years of development to show something.
People need to be patient with forwards.
Brander is the one with the ?
No amount of time is going to help his game.Absolute bust.

Awesome work Taylor - how did you do that? Must've taken ages.

I reckon Sam Taylor , although a Backman ,would be a better option. He has really great hands in marking and doesn't go missing, plays well very week.

I looked up which games he kicked goals in, pulled up the timeline for each game, noted the rough time the goals were scored then pulled up the match tape to watch it.

Probably took only about ten mins and I got to watch Freo doing really well for those patches. Tabs was absolutely dominant against Essendon

With Jackson playing higher up the ground, is there less requirement for Tabs to run huge distances each game?

Tabs and Amiss parked in the forward line will cause plenty of headaches for the opposition.

Tipping big year for tabs 40+ goals

They are training Tabs as a lead out forward to minimise injury

They've indicated that he will be playing the forward ruck role. I hope we get a bit of midfield time from him as well.

Forward-ruck needs to be about goals. Jackson still has a bit of work to do is n that regard.

I would like to see Taberner, Amiss and Treacy almost locked into our forward line, with some kind of rotation of Jackson.

We really need to be moving past Taberner asap.

Cheers Taylor, you very smart!

He'll help with that by getting injured for half the season no doubt.

I would love to rotate Treacy through the midfield instead of Jackson just like we used to do with Pav. The size and agression would be awesome to see on full display and surely help with our clearences.

The training regime under Ross, the new stadium, hasn’t helped Tabs cause.
When you look at other clubs forwards in comparison, even WC and you get a
clear picture.
Pearce, Logue, are in the same boat and it wasn’t till JLo took over that they
showed some continuity.
Tabs appears to be the type to overload, and even last year Treacy appeared
to me in the off season to have gone down that path.
What got Treacy drafted? In my eyes he is a power forward, that was our need.
The opposite happened with Medhurst, adding too much muscle, then we traded
him to the Pies.
If you need guidance Pavlich, Mundy, Walters, seemed to get the balance right for
their body types.
Fyfe is probably the exception, but if he doesn’t get more rat cunning, the younger
bulls will put him out to pasture.

Didn't the club come out and say Melb were using him wrong in the forwardline lol
