I've said elsewhere I'd get rid of them for a pack of twisties

You're not going to get anything for them. Gov is out of contract, Martin would get you a 3rd rounder at best and we'd pay half his salary and fisher maybe a 3rd rounder or 4th

Think there is a great storyline playing out in the NBA at the moment...two disciplined, workmanlike squads putting their glamorous, superstar led opponents to the sword in the conference finals.

There has been growing discourse over recent years that a lot of the highly rated juniors coming through have NFI how to be good team players. The top rookies have huge profiles from early on, huge social followings, arses kissed through college (the one or two years they may play college ball), sponsors lining up, max contracts spoken about from day one. But few clues about playing a winning brand of basketball.

They you look at a squad like the Heat...they have a couple of a graders in Jimmy and Bam, but they're not flash a graders, they are workers, a fat old PG known for his defense first and foremost, four guys that went totally undrafted and had to forge a career from the bottom up, and a few retreads that have bounced around the league.

But they have this revered culture that seems to get the very best out of their guys. The organisation never seems to bottom out and never (well, rarely - it is the NBA) seems to get seduced by style over substance. They have a bell clear understanding of what they stand for. They dedicate one of only 15 roster spots to a 42 year old that never takes the floor...because he is the embodiment of their culture.

Modern Carlton has never had that. When the shit hit the fan we pinned all our hops and dreams on a trio of #1 picks, and then pivoted to Judd, and then all eggs in the Malthouse basket, and then Cripps...and then, and then, and then. It's always magic beans.

Our club 'culture' is that of cop outs on and off the field. Always looking for the shortcut. The bail out. We never seem to serve beyond self interest...for any greater good. We're the ****ing Knicks.

I suppose what I am getting around to is I don't care who comes or goes...until such time as we start to put the right foundation stones in place it really doesn't matter.

Yep I don’t care if we pick them up from a country footy league. As long as they come in and star in their role no matter what’s in front of them then I’d be more than honoured to have them representing the jumper.

Cumberland and Ash Johnson. I'd chase these 2 hard
Johnson you'd imagine would be pretty settled at the Pies.

Cumberland definitely, and there are others I'd be targeting....off the top of my head, players such as Kai Lohmann, Joel Jeffrey, Jake Riccardi, Eddie Ford, and possibly even Dylan Stephens. Good role players that would complement our list that wouldn't cost the earth.

I don't think most Carlton supporters objectively look at our list. Coloured by the reputation of a handful of stars at the top.
By contrast, Collingwood have even depth acros the board...with fewer "stars". I think the difference between Carlton and Collingwood is best represented in the difference between Harry Mckay and Brodie Mihocek. Harry is the star. Brodie is the value. I'd trade star for dependable.
McGovern, Martin, Williams...flashy, but not dependable. We need a moneyball approach to the team.

Strange isn't it, that core Pies side finished 17th, 18 months ago

Players or system?

Going to throw this out there...we have an issue where we need a 3rd tall up front. Why not go for Jack Darling, 30 y/o premiership player. Won't cost much, could even trade Fish back to WA. Perfect 3rd tall, provides experience and will draw a decent defender.

Crushed the nail on the head.

yep, I'm over "potential"

We need another capable ruckman not a project, We need outside midfielders not contested ball winners but players always in and around the contest
We need a medium forward.

We need to stick with Voss, not point fingers and turn on our own.
Would rather find out now changes in the way we play and set up are needed to get to September rather than go through last year again.

End of year delistings:
Fogarty #8
Marchbank #22
Ed Curnow #35
Philip #34
Plowman #20
Honey #36
O'Brien #4

That number seems about right. I'd also add a trade or two, Dow is surely going to be traded given our resistance to play him despite doing well in the 2s. Would they also consider trading Martin and Gov?

I would love to know how people rated Collingwood’s list 18months ago, Geelong’s half way through last year and Richmond’s at the end of 2016.
I really don’t think our problems are as big as it’s being made out in regards to our list.
I agree. A Collingwood mate even when winning said he doesn’t rate their list and said they have too many spuds. Another Richmond mate at the time you mention felt pretty negative about the situation.

It’s not always about spuds and stars. Great coaching with the right system makes the difference.

Carlton does need a couple of new players added or even given another go. But it’s not that far away. It just looks worse the way we play currently. Hopefully it clicks soon

When you see the Geel list manager with Tom's brother and father watching our reserves game on the weekend, you have to think that's more than likely.
My question would be what can we get from Geel to make us better?
Geelong managed to obtain a high draft pick from Gold Coast last year for basically nothing, maybe they can get lucky again & on trade to us for TDK.
