I would offer west coast McGovern , fisher and Jack Martin for the number 1 pick to start with
They need experienced players , not a newbie who won't hang around for more than 2 years.

You can offer that but no-one is going to take it. That is a terrible deal for any other team. i mean, seriously.....
Maybe we wouldn't get a No.1 pick but I'd offer that up just to get those players off our list and free up cap space for someone who wants to play for the jumper. It's a good idea and West Coast would take it I reckon because they need players fast.

Yes I’ve said this for years. We needed to go after hodge, Breust, types.
I was thinking about the other day. A couple who fit that bill to me who are OOC this year are:
Pendlebury
Fyfe - if his body could hold up
Cotchin
Boak

If we had got Cook a year or so earlier, we could have targeted Selwood for a year or two and transitioned him into a coaching/development role but that boat has floated.

I don't think most Carlton supporters objectively look at our list. Coloured by the reputation of a handful of stars at the top.
By contrast, Collingwood have even depth acros the board...with fewer "stars". I think the difference between Carlton and Collingwood is best represented in the difference between Harry Mckay and Brodie Mihocek. Harry is the star. Brodie is the value. I'd trade star for dependable.
McGovern, Martin, Williams...flashy, but not dependable. We need a moneyball approach to the team.
100%. And the more flashy 'stars' eating up the cap imbalances the payments for the soldier types. If you want buy in you need hard-workers across the board with only 1 or 2 polished champs to finish off the hard work.

Until we player with good disposal by foot, our current Gameplan is not going to work becuase it largely involves isolating players on the run and hitting targets, both of which we are absolutely incapable of doing atm.

For the short term, we would be better dragging teams down to our level playing lock-down footy and keeping it down to a scrap, because 90% of the AFL sides now are playing a free flowing game that cuts us to pieces on the turnover.

I think we have plenty of good kicks.

Cerra, Saad, Weitering, Newman, Docherty, Kennedy, McGovern, Boyd, LOB, Hewett, Curnow, Kemp, Owies, Carroll, Cowan, Cincotta

All recruited to the club as above average users of the ball by foot.

Walsh, Owies, McKay, Honey, Fisher, Young

All recruited to the club as reasonable users of the ball by foot.

I’m not going to bother listing Williams, Cuningham or Martin as they are never available.

Carlton do draft classy and skilful players. For whatever reason we just can not get it to work for them at AFL level. And in fairness to Voss it’s been happening for the last decade. We have not played a generally skilful brand of football since Ratts and that was for a very short period of time.

LOB is not good by foot and Not many of those you have listed get forward of center, which is where we continually turn the ball over.
Williams IS a very good ball user, and I'll say it again, should be trialed as a Mid/Fwd.

I'm not picking on Voss, and our Gameplan is reasonable, but we simply cannot execute it at present.

Mental Demons, poor delivery in the forward line, knowing how to put the ball to the advantage of a leading forward (knowing how/where to lead into space!) or lack of effective tackling & pressure on the ball carrier, any or all of these things are a factor at present.

I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom like the rest of you .. we just have to insert some players with a bit of ticker that run and have half decent disposal .. high on the list for me with Austin is running capacity.
Feel like we missed the landscape a little of what AFL was Turing into.
I reckon SOS also identified this as a hole in our in his last stint as list manager. He went out and drafted Philp and Ramsay and Cotters to add some run to the list - you could probably even add Kemp to that to some extent. Unfortunately it hasn't worked out for Philp and Ramsay for various reasons - and we're still trying to work out where to best play Kemp.

We added Saad and Williams to the list for more run and carry - and last year added Ollie and Binns for the same reason. When you go back and look at the video from draft nite after we selected Binns, you see Austin turn to Vossy and say "you got that extra run you were after" - or something along those lines.

In 2024, we'll hopefully draft the Campo boys as well - so we'll be adding more run to the list.

I've said elsewhere I'd get rid of them for a pack of twisties

You're not going to get anything for them. Gov is out of contract, Martin would get you a 3rd rounder at best and we'd pay half his salary and fisher maybe a 3rd rounder or 4th

Disagree on LOB, he is actually elite by foot on his left, when he is playing with confidence.
Reckon he will be a big improver next year at the Aints, along with Dow and JSOS.

This isn’t the 70s and 80s….fringe Carlton players won’t be heading to a side one game out of the top 4

They would be lucky to get games at the WCE

Reckon SOS is licking his lips at the thought of picking up these players. Will cost stuff all and be valuable depth, at the very least.

Our kicking is poor all over the park. Not just in the forward half. And I don’t think it’s because we draft or recruit lesser ball users than other clubs.

Seeing Docherty running into an open forward 50 and bombing it over Harry’s head to two Collingwood defenders ruined me. He was a great kick and a great decision maker but is a shadow of his former self.

Smart and skillful players come into the club and slowly but surely have that developed out of them. Kills us from making any progress.

Watson, Wilson, Patton in the draft
Gresham and Florent via trade/FA
Cahill from VFL

Trade TDK, Fisher, Gov. All 3 aren't doing bugger all for us with the way our list is structured. One of Kennedy/Hewett if needed but should be fine to get it done with our picks next year and the other 3 to get more bites at the apple in this years draft.

Would love to know what happens at training where we let players slowly lose the whole reason we drafted them in the first place.

Ben Ainsworth and Fiorini from the suns would be a good get.
