I still think Gresham could be worth a punt if he's on modest coin and willing to buy into our team structure.

Looks to have finally gotten his body right which is a big tick.

I have sympathy for his situation. Yes, he's having a "bad" year, seems to burn his teammates regularly and looks checked out. But I'd be frustrated as well if I was playing as an attacker under their system in a contract year. They had their whole team behind the ball majority of the game.

He would be best 22 for us, with potential to be within our best 10 players.

Plays a position of need. Half forward flank and a proven goal scorer, or midfield in the second rotation to provide a bit of pace.

Costs no draft assets.

Fits the age profile perfectly.

If he doesn’t want overs in salary, and we are confident his form can be put down to being checked out and Ross Lyon, then he is a no brainer.

Like Cripps, McGovern, Martin, Docherty, Dow and countless others, it is dangerous to judge a player at their worst. All of the above would’ve been turfed for 3rd rounders at one point or another (Dow still might). AFL list managers will see value in a player like Gresham.

If WCE are interested in Fish, I'm tipping their list manager wouldn't have liked what he saw yesterday.

All of a sudden, their initial lowball offer of pick 53 steadily rose to their pick 38 by the end of the 1st quarter, then up to their pick 34 by half time....then pick 19 by three quarter time, then to Harley Reid by the end of the match!!!

He was sensational yesterday....easily the best game I've seen him play for the club.

Absolutely agree. Gresham has looked a complete shell of himself this year much like Weiters earlier in the season. Somethings not right with him at the moment and if the club is aware of what's going on and have faith he'll come good in a fresh environment then I'd back them to get him back to his best.

From what I've heard he can't stand Ross and Ross isn't a fan of him either. Can't tell you whether that's factual or not though as its second hand information.

Would he come cheap?

No idea, Saints fans think he'd be chasing a paycheque but his form this year has been putrid so can't imagine he'll be offered much.
You'd reckon right now he'd be happy with just a contract.

I still wouldn't be surprised if we weren't interested - particularly if we'd some type of commitment to him earlier in the year - but his value would definitely be dropping to the point that the Aints would be happy to get anything for him in compensation.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if we've cooled on him a fair bit. Think he ends up at Hawthorn.

Would be great if we can have a good run into finals, might get some players willing to take unders to come and try and nab a flag in the next few years.

Well if you want to be pedantic about it, we have to give up a player for any trade or draft pick, as we are already at (over) our maximum on the playing list. The point though is, that we are highly unlikely to be trading a player to St Kilda for Gresham. Our interest in him (if there is any) is that he is a free agent, and thus costs us nothing in draft capital or trade.
I think we should ignore the temptation to trade in more mature players and focus on the draft for another year at least, the playing list is solid and a nice age/experience demographic. Salary cap is tight and we've traded in Martin, Williams, Saad, Cerra, Hewett and Acres recently.
Might be time to reconsider trading away Dow, JSOS and Fish for SFA in order to accommodate the next bright/shiny thing.

Agree. Think focus on draft for the next couple of years makes sense.

After offering to purchase tickets for both Fisher and Dow to Perth in the game day thread after that Dow mark, handball to Fisher that he spilt at half back and resultant goal. Watching the game last night with luxury of a relaxed post win demeanour. They both worked their way into the game in their own way very well.

I have been critical of Fisher and his lack of defensive pressure but playing off half back yesterday he was v good both ways. If we run the mantra of rewarding form he stays in that half back role for next week. Dow as well if none of the other first string mids get up he stays. Would bring Boyd in as sub as more running cover.

100% hold onto Dow, Jack and Fish at minimal expense if we can. If you look at our retention rate over the past few years, it's clear to see the players don't jump ship much at all. Talk is they are all very happy together so we should hold what we can and go to the draft.

I would go the draft this year and next and the focus should be on bringing in more quality kids. Lets find the next Cripps along with speed, elite kicking and goal scoring. We need some kids with xfactor and a thirst for goals along with a key back.

Brian Cook says draft plus free agency. Seems to be sticking to all his other mantras..

Players left unsigned will all be offered unders by necessity. They may well field offers elsewhere and doubt the club would play hardball, except for Jack maybe. Unless there's a bidding war, can only see a string of 3rd rounders coming in (fingers crossed picks in the 30s). Shame as we won't replace them for that

Back to Brian Cook tho, maybe we can swing a Geelong somehow and keep everyone? And add first rounders and steel talent etc.

First world problems at this point

We can do both if we recruit a free agent. That is the pull of a player like Gresham who you wouldn’t otherwise look at.
Since we look finals bound and have some pretty big contracts, maybe not chasing a FA and only going to the draft might be a logical way forward for a year or 2 imo.

Now would be a good time to pull back if we can on spendings and invest in our youth and bring the cap back.

Tbh the only free agent next year I like is Hugh Mccluggage and tbh he may be surplus to our needs.

On SEN last week, Sam Edmund said that Dow desperately wants to stay at the club. He's of the view that he may get offered another short term contract, although ol' mate Jonny Ralph reckons that if another club offers him a multi year contract, we'll just facilitate a Setterfield type trade just to get him to a new home.

I would kind of hope that we may get something a little better than a pick in the 60's for him though. I don't mind the concept, but we're not a charity for the rest of the competition.

Seriously overrating Gresham. Best 10 players? The Saints board are screaming for the club to get rid of him. They don't care if they get nothing back.

He has been an inconsistent, flaky player his entire career. He's in really bad form this year but it's not like this is an outlier. He has as many clanger lowlights as he has highlights.

He offers nothing we don't already have. Durdin has had an injury interrupted year but I'm confident he'll be a better player than Gresham.

Possible 4th round pick was mentioned by Ralph on On The Couch, I’d rather keep him on a fair contract if he is still willing to stay than take that type of draft deal, he’s worth more to us than a pick in that range…

He has the potential to be in our best 10 players. We aren’t buying the Gresham of 2023. It’s a reasonable risk to take but not everyone will agree.

And who gives a shit what the Saints board says. Read our board on any random week over the last 15 years and it’ll show us shoving far better players than Gresham out the door for nothing.

Don't think Dow and Fish will want to stick around and play majority in the twos in the hops of injuries to break in. If they leave in search of more regular appearances at senior level, then they can't be begrudged. As for JSOS, he offers a point of difference in his versatility. I also prefer the JSOS / TDK combo than the Pitto / TDK combo.

Pass on Gresham from me as well.

I don’t see how he is a need for our team.

Owies motts durds fog cunners Martin ….we’ve got plenty that kick goals and get involved in scoring. They’re also providing a tonne of Pressure.

The way we’ve been playing I’d say we don’t really need mature players. Plenty of depth.

Focus on the draft as others have pointed out.
