2. NORTH MELBOURNE

Selections: Colby McKercher (2), Zane Duursma (4), Taylor Goad (20), Wil Dawson (22), Riley Hardeman (23). Rookie draft: Finnbar Maley (2)

Once they were out of the running to secure Harley Reid via West Coast’s first pick, the Roos refocused and landed five killer blows with their suite of first-round picks, beginning with a gun midfielder in McKercher and key forward in Duursma. Took line-breaking WA defender Hardeman, towering ruck Goad and key defender Dawson with their other selections.

Who was 1? Assuming gold coast?

NORTH MELBOURNE

Plenty of new faces at Arden Street. Pick 2 draftee Colby McKercher feels like a lock as perhaps the best pure midfielder in the draft, so Roos fans can look forward to seeing him line up alongside the likes of Luke Davies-Uniacke, Jy Simpkin and George Wardlaw. Pick 4 draftee Zane Duursma should be right in the mix too with a strong pre-season and offers them X-factor in the forward half where Alastair Clarkson’s side is still lacking. Riley Hardeman would be a good chance after playing league footy with Swan Districts and he generally seems to have a mature head on his shoulders that wouldn’t be phased by the bright lights. As for Taylor Goad and Will Dawson, they’re likely to spend most of the year in the VFL developing.

I also reckon we kinda restarted our rebuild again in 2023.
100%. Interestingly I feel this draft will put us on a fast track to improvement. I expect us to move out of the bottom 4 (finally!) next year and hopefully giving the top 8 a real push the year after? Is this pie in the sky stuff? Maybe, but the list suddenly looks to be really balanced and it’s just a matter of getting games into the young guys.
This trade and draft period is exactly what I was hoping for. All we’re lacking is that manic small forward, as has been mentioned, but i think that on paper a forward line with larkey, zurhaar, Curtis, duursma, sheeze (if they move him off half back) , Thomas and hell even steveo can cause some havoc.

I’m bullish about this side next season, and I can’t remember the last time I actually felt this way. Even when we got the ****ing deserter I knew we’d still be shit.

Left field option for the start of his career, McKercher?
If he can add that manic style pressure to his game, could be the final string to his bow, especially whilst he’s developing an afl ready body.

Pressures on the development team and coaches to make up the fact that we've lost what 1300+ games worth of experience this year.
Yes we've brought in exceptional players but also lost key positions in goldy and a lesser extent ziebs/logue down back.
Hope the kids are upto the challenge and we turn some of those close losses from 2023 into wins next year.
Pass mark is 6-8 wins with a fit xerri.

I honestly think he could be albeit undersized. With added muscle he could definitely play the Mihochek role but with a heap more talent.
Still has time to grow too.
Finbar might end up being that 2nd key forward and dursma an Oliver Henry type.

'Really balanced list' is probably pushing it a bit. We're one (rather likely) Comben injury away from yet another carry job from Larkey, and one Larkey injury away from a flat out forward crisis. LMac is probably our best small/medium defender in defensive terms, so unless K Dawson learns to plays that role to support, or Hardeman's defensive ability comes on in leaps and bounds, small/medium forwards will be licking their lips.

The rest of it is pretty sensible though. I agree we should see some exciting moments from most of our blokes, and it feels like we've shored up our depth more effectively than in previous years. The ceiling is higher than it's been and the floor is as low as ever until further notice

some of his highlights prompted the same thought from me; he roves the ball pretty well inside 50

If Larkey and Comben go down for the whole season...Clarko might have to be creative have the most mobile forward line in modern day football with no player over 190cm - might have to make the midfield smarter with their forward entries so instead of bombing it, look for the lead...just like early 90's footy.
Curtis, Zurhaar, RHJ
Sausage, Duursma, Sheez
Sleevo off the bench.
CCJ has to step up.
Maley thrown into the wolves

It would be worrying:oops:

Finbar plays, North takes players in the MSD.
It's not the end of the world

I expect us to be bottom four again. Yes, I think there'll be improvement but winning eight or nine games in 2024 seems a stretch, tbh.
