Pardon the intrusion.

You had Connor Downie training with you - and reading your trackwatchers reports, he was impressing.

Is the door closed for him now or is the SSP the target for him to join you guys?

He showed some skill at Hawthorn, but there were questions about his defensive and tackling parts of his game.
It seems he has worked at it with you guys, and worked hard.

SSP a chance for Downie?

I always like it when a player recognises his flaws, and works his socks off to turn it around and gets another chance.

Hopefully CD gets one

Cheers for any replies.

I'd say the likelihood of us picking him up in the SPP period has dramatically decreased. Mainly because of the acquisitions of Stephens, Fisher and McKercher who can all rotate through the wings.

He is still doing main training sessions with the senior side, so that's a positive for him as he has the chance to impress the coaching staff.

Both he and Tyler Sellers were discussed as potential options in the MSD last year too.

If Larkey and Comben go down for the whole season...Clarko might have to be creative have the most mobile forward line in modern day football with no player over 190cm - might have to make the midfield smarter with their forward entries so instead of bombing it, look for the lead...just like early 90's footy.
Curtis, Zurhaar, RHJ
Sausage, Duursma, Sheez
Sleevo off the bench.
CCJ has to step up.
Maley thrown into the wolves

It would be worrying:oops:
If Curnow & McKay go down for the season…
If Daniher & Hipwood go down for the season…
If Cameron & Hawkins go down for the season…

Every single team has issues if they lose their two key forwards. We survived most of the year without Comben and given he's likely playing back he shouldn't even be in the conversation.

On a more positive note what if it clicks for CCJ? What if Duursma kicks 30 – 40 goals? What if Zurhaar has an injury free season? What if Brayden George plays 12+ games? What if Ford has a break out year? What if Taryn Thomas has an AA FWD/MID year? What if Stevo has a consistent year?

The pessimism on this board is insufferable at times.

Or here...

I thought disappointing that in talking about our forward line next year Brady omitted to mention Eddy Ford. Every game he plays there has been so much improvement, has shown great contested marking, goal sense, impressive endurance capabilities and someone I see as a big part of our future. On top of that his last game for us he won the Rising Star nomination.

If not the forward line maybe they’re building him up for more of a wing role. Or maybe Brady’s just getting a bit forgetful.

Will Brown194cm87kgMidfielder/Tall ForwardSandringham DragonsUnique tall midfielder, uses his body well around the stoppages. Strong hands around the ground.
Geez, I reckon Brown was very unlucky. Skipper of premiership side & kicked 3 goals.
Maybe his pace cost him a spot.

I also reckon we kinda restarted our rebuild again in 2023.

* knows what the previous regime was doing. In hindsight, it's easy to judge but we were utterly useless. Spineless performances (from 2022 especially) should never, ever, EVER happen again. Our jumper means too much to be embarrassed so repeatedly like it was. That was a seriously insulting period to watch as a supporter. Especially from the stands when everyone around you just collectively drop their heads in disappointment as we get done by 10+ goals again. That's what hurts even more. They are not even mad, just so done it's become numb.

Don't let that happen again, North.
Perfectly summed up….

You just put into words the misery endured by every North supporter, especially those that turned up week in, week out over the last 4 years.

Numb…..

Had sung the song in victory after a game in Melbourne just a couple of times over 2-3 years. The embarrassment of this period compared to the 90s when I’d rock up each week knowing we were going to thump the opposition and we were going to witness arrogant, beautiful football is something I don’t want to have to experience again.

Here’s to new beginnings. Very excited about this list under Clarko.

It would be refreshing.

I worry that the Duursma/Sheezel/George combo will be squeezing him out. Hopefully not.

100%. Interestingly I feel this draft will put us on a fast track to improvement. I expect us to move out of the bottom 4 (finally!) next year and hopefully giving the top 8 a real push the year after? Is this pie in the sky stuff? Maybe, but the list suddenly looks to be really balanced and it’s just a matter of getting games into the young guys.
This trade and draft period is exactly what I was hoping for. All we’re lacking is that manic small forward, as has been mentioned, but i think that on paper a forward line with larkey, zurhaar, Curtis, duursma, sheeze (if they move him off half back) , Thomas and hell even steveo can cause some havoc.

I’m bullish about this side next season, and I can’t remember the last time I actually felt this way. Even when we got the ******* deserter I knew we’d still be s**t.

I reckon it’s now over to Clarko as psychologist. If he can teach them the winning habits (all the way from training to game day and to those key moments when the game is in the balance) we could rapidly jump up even next season. The talent is there and as we’ve seen in the past, both at North and other clubs, with high end talent they can often perform almost from day 1, even though they are still far from hitting their peak. Sure, blokes like Goad, Dawson II etc will take time but Wardlaw, Sheezel, McKercher, Duursma, Hardeman, Goater, Thomas, LDU, Simpkin, Larkey, Scott, Stevo, Corr, Fisher, Stephens, Zurhaar, Ford, Phillips, Powell, Curtis - right there is 20 blokes who could easily get a game in the finals team so we have plenty to work with.

Pace and kicking. I don't think he has enough skill to make it as a 195cm midfielder, but I don't mind his work as a key forward, particularly because he is good below his knees and knows how to use his body in the contest. Be interesting to see what path he goes down in the future.

Wasn't being overly pessimistic more matter of actually as l replied to a comment made what if Comben and Larkey went down and while it might be doom and gloom l posted that the midfield might actually look up and hit the leading forward because they don't have the luxury of dump kicking it to Larkey like they have for the last 4 years. CCJ has to step up and Maley has to play, all the forwards would need to step up if that scenario played out.
It's no different to how Collingwood's forward line operated during the GF?

Fair enough. Apologies, I didn't realise it was a reply as it didn't reference the original post.

Yeah some of his decision making in the heat of the midfield during some of his Claremont games was a bit like hot potato. Heard his manager pre draft saying he'd like to develop his midfied game, maybe a rebounder and at best on the wing but to try and make him in a Bont or Cripps, l don't see it either.

Anyway, good luck to him and if he does become a 50% mid and 50% KPP there will be two clubs that will rue that one got away from them.

I think now that we have the players in the door the question now turns to couple of things…

1. What is success/pass mark this year for the club?
I have it as near double wins 6ish, more importantly is quality of performance. We have lost BC, McKay, Ziebell, Hall and let’s not forget the most important cog Kayne. Huge turnover year for us. Only reason I don’t say 6 minimum.

2. What’s each individuals goals this year?

Warlord deserves the question and I would assume over 16 games and polling well in rising star
Sheezel is to back up last year and take more of a leadership role
Mckertcher 16-22 games
Duursma 12-16 games maybe less given role and time needed to develop
KPP in draft Dawson and Goad. Develop in the VFL and put together some good form maybe push for games
Hardaman could look to play games early…

Anyone else?

For 1, the pass mark for me is around where the Hawks were this year: 7 wins and about 80%. We're going to struggle to attract many good free agents if we are still that low though. I think 85% would signal that we're clearly on the rebound back up the ladder.

For 2, I just really want Chom, Wardlaw and Phillips to build consistency.

I personally think 12-18 maybe less. Hasn’t played senior footy ever, last time he played any footy well over 18 months. I think this year would be more developmental the. People hope for him.

Phillips?
Bearing in mind he was ready to go towards the end of last year but was deliberately held back. And hasn't had his aerobic preparation hampered by the arm injury. I reckon he'll be in from the start
