My view is (and has been since last year) no coach can make up for this type of stuff - no coach or game plan or ABCD derivation of swapping magnets this is ALL on the players on field peformance...

enjoy the watching...

Saba is usually spot on with his videos and I understand his frustration with the team and why he ended up making a meme-laced video.
However, if anyone's expecting any level of analysis like his usual videos, you'll be disappointed.

He did bring it on himself by wanting to stay.

Had every right to be looking for a move but didn't pursue it.

He knew this is what had been happening and could keep happening.

Obviously he accepted that scenario.
I thought he was still contracted for this year? I was under the impression we'd put him up for trade but there were very few suitors?

For those that look at Dow's history of playing ones he is listed as playing 4 games last year. In fact, 3 of those games he was sub. It's hard to do too much when you are sub. So under Voss he has played 1 senior game. That is all.

Our ones are playing garbage football. We are too predictable and too slow in the midfield. Dow is tearing it up in the twos and needs to be given a chance to refresh our midfield. It is disappointing that he is not selected. Who will run off Cripps this week?

Slight semantics but he was picked in the starting line up and played full games twice last season - in round 11 vs Collingwood and round 21 vs Brisbane - he played ok against the Pies but was pretty ordinary against the Lions.

If you have two of them in at all times you end up only giving Cerra and Walsh 50% midfield time which imo they are the two we actually need in there the most.
Well that's just wrong.

Walsh spends a lot of time as the HFF to run in as an extra. I think this is an idiotic tactic, but that's how Voss does it.

I'm all for discussion but you keep shifting the goalposts every time you're shown to be incorrect. Poor form. Poor form.

No room for Dow?

Collingwood - 4 inside mids + the two daicos.
Bulldogs - 5+ inside mids.... They have room for Treloar on top of them all too.
etc etc
Carlton - Cripps, Kennedy (who isn't even playing 'inside') and before this round Hewett. That is it. All other clubs use their Cerra and walsh types as first receivers away from the contest. Their Docherty types off half back and then rotate the extra contested mids through.

Think the main 'issue' for Dow is - yeah - he doesn't fit because we don't rotate. Just look at other clubs though, contested midfield is a brutal spot, they need to rotate in game. Pretty much every other club has that figured out...

There’s just no way we can put Jack in the middle against big Max & Grundy after the mauling he copped against the pies.

Get ready H, time to step up.

Good call.
It’s suicide playing Silvagni in the ruck.
Can’t believe they’d even be considering it against Gawn and Grundy … or anyone really …

That kind of stuff on display is UNANALYSABLE which is why he asked people for help - it is inexplicably bad like so so bad...but the set shot kicking takes the cake...nothing a coach can do if your star forwards are missing set shots like that...it is all in the year's stats quoted previously - not rocket science.

Good points.

actually, why not start him there?

We should at least try and take advantage of no Oliver for Melbourne (least early) and if we still struggle to score after about 15 mins, then throw Cripps forward, although his set shot kicking at goal leaves a lot to be desired.

Been a problem at Carlton for years.

We play break even rucks at best & it’s killing us.

Go spend a quid EOS & get a decent one.

If the Dees can take on a million dollar 2nd ruck, surely the penny has dropped.

TDK gets another chance to seize the #1 ruck role for himself over the next 2 weeks.

If he can't do it it's on him and he can go looking for another club at the end of season if he wants but it will change nothing.

There are no clubs in the AFL who don't have another ruck at least as good as Pitto whom he'll need supplant to play guaranteed regular footy.

Kennedy doesn’t get a stat for his most selfless & valuable role - the crash test dummy. When we are playing well he invariably becomes the link player who gets absolutely smashed by hospital handballs/kicks - he still gets an effective disposal & carry’s on. You get bang for buck with his disposals, he loses very few contests & his tackles stick - none of that appears in the stat sheet.
We are just using him very very poorly - he’s mid/fwd not mid/back
Agree I've never seen anyone receive as many hospital passes as him. It's like there's a bet internally around who can get him hit the hardest this week.

As for the tackling... he only averages 3 a game for his career. It's not really a strength. Even in a career best season last yr playing mid all season it was 4. He's not exactly a tackler. Doesn't seem right given his reputation as this crash and bash inside mid, but he also only averages single digit contest possessions and below 4 clearances a game.

I do like his disposal and marking though. Its almost like his skill set is more outside mid but his physical ability says he should be inside.

He was rated as above average in almost every statistical category playing on ball last year. This year he is playing as a backman - difficult to rack up stats when you're lining up on Mihocek (yes, that happened).
One year as above average for his career, every other would be average or below. There's a reason he's been shifted back and it's not because he was playing so well on ball.

He definitely shouldn't be back though whoever thought that was a good idea needs a spell. He's got to be on ball.

Tipped a conservative selection week and they didn't disappoint. Only one I got wrong was Ed Curnow with Young coming back instead.
That's not new. He's always gone the conservative route with experience and the guys he knows more than youth and something different, even dating back to his Brisbane days it was his m.o.

I'm disappointed it hasn't changed.

Cripps should be playing more time up forward.

Plenty examples over the years of successful teams pushing their gun onballer forward for positive impact.
His goal kicking, especially set shot is sub par. So hey, why not throw him forward and see if he can kick 0.4 just like the rest.

Sigh.....

It improved last year (kicked 20.9) - but the key for Cripps is pushing himself forward from the stoppage and therefore making a smaller player defend him - a matchup he can take advantage of. When he starts a centre bounce in the f50 it doesn't work because he can get in the way of other forwards and gets into wrestling matches too often.

Not sure if in the Welcome Dow or game preview thread.

He’s played two games in the guts so far this year with an average of 24. That’s above average again. He also played an influential role in our best win of the season. He also finished top 10 in the JNM playing midfield last year. To suggest that he’s been shifted back due to poor form is wrong imo.

As far as I’m concerned, he has more than enough runs on the board to get significant inside mid minutes.

The more I see him lining up in defence, the more I lose faith in this coaching group. Simple as that.
