28 touches and six clearances. Grew into the game as did the team.

Some hard taskmasters on here (or alternatively people who have a perception and are not prepared to change it).
I think it was more that there were contests that he should have gone in for and decided to run away/corral for a run and carry - problem being that there was no Carlton player at the contest, which means Fish ideally had to go in. I thought there were times where he didn’t want contact at all.

Might have been different at the game.

Nice to win and all of that.

But they were basically missing their backline and their best key forward played injured all game.

Last year we were too attacking that defensively we had problems. This year, we’ve overcorrected. Last year we dominated in the centre, this year we are losing Centre clearances.

I’m hoping Voss can fix this on the run. No one should be getting too excited with that win.
Dragon, Walsh, Bam Bam and Acres will auto correct the centre clearance issue

Re hollands attending centre square, i think that was accidental. Docherty came off bench but didnt make it so he started wing and hollands in the middle.

However we saw the value of a player that can spread. Crippa got clearance and handed to Ollie who ran to his right and kicked ball forward. One of cleaner clearances.
Breakaway speed is the key ingredient our midfield lacks at the moment, once we get that sorted we will have a much better balance in there.

Walsh certainly helps but another 1 or 2 silky options would be great.

He gets paid by another club - he can’t be seen to be a Carlton fanboy in public. What do you think happens if St Kilda is having a bad run and the press can get photos of him in a Carlton scarf celebrating with Carlton royalty? SOS is, above all else, a professional - but if you think he’s not enjoying seeing his son kick a goal, take a speccy or turn himself inside out for the navy blue (whilst sitting next to his smoking wife) you are dreaming.
Just hoping he’s not scouting his boy for the Saints list…

Got berrated in here suggesting that vosswagen selecting Honey off the back of 5 possessions in the 2s was NOT an example of selection integrity.

Guess I was right. 9 possessions 0 tackles.

Now, lets reward players in the 2s who actually do their job.

Dow 31 2goals 5 tackles

Binns 18 2 goals 3 tackles

Kemp again busy with plenty of touches.

Nice to win, but we have a few passengers that need to be weeded out

No one is a passenger.
Some just contribute less than others and some play roles.
They are all our team. Go baggers.

Kept a close eye on LOB all day, sadly he just doesn’t have any poise. If I was to quantify him, deer in headlights is what I’d say fits best.

He is not or will ever be in a best 22 premiership side. Time to look elsewhere on the list where his role in the team is now.
There was a chance for him to smother a goal in the last and it was one of those moments where the optics is pretty bad. The great thing is he got down there to near the square but once he's there he ends to impact, which too often he doesn't.

Fisher does position himself as a receiver on the outside of contests - however sometimes when it is your turn to go you go in and make a contest, my eyes show me that he too often avoids that and when he does go he gets brushed off like dandruff. In every game I could do a clip and show multiple instances of this occurring and it isn't a positive - this has to be balanced against his ok link work - calling for a receive is also an issue- where he demands the ball in a bad position and then puts teammates under pressure because he shouldn't have got the ball in the first place. He is a work in progress atm - six years in.

I suspect Hollands will be a mid in a few years and Binns will have his wing spot.

I agree. I’ve been super critical of him over the years but I thought he was terrific yesterday. For the role he plays those numbers are elite and watching him he did pretty everything you’d want from someone playing that role. I’m not sure what more people criticising him for yesterdays performance expect from him.

It's nice that a positional need player fell to our pick. Once we have Walsh and Holland in the same squad, those wings will be covered nicely. Cowan is another recruit that just suits our needs nicely, tough and with kicking skills. Hopefully he will allow the likes of Saad and Doch to be played further up the ground.
Both will only become more influential as they grow into their frames and gain more experience.

Owies, Walsh, Martin, Kennedy, Acres, Boyd... Those are some names that may join our team from todays effort, which will be nice to see. You need a solid list of 26-28 players and Carlton are slowly getting there, our bottom six is becoming less of a liability. The two kids are playing important roles and in 3-5 years time they will transition into a more expansive role.
I'd probably add Cottrell to that list. As well as speed he has a defensive side to his game and can stick a tackle, which is something both LOB and Fisher struggle with. Martin has the talent, but does he have the application?

If possible, I feel that the two ruck set up works the best, even if I'd love to see TDK the main man, Pitt is tough and bangs the opposition rucks nicely.
I'd be a lot happier if they both brought the attitude they did against the Cats every week. Very aggressive at the ball and contest, which sets the tone for the midfield.

JSOS - He's slightly concerning with his position and role.
LOB - He really needs confidence to get his best and he seems down on it at the moment.
Honey - I may be wrong in my assessment of his chances at AFL level, just a step off the pace.
JSOS needs the midfield to be at least somewhat effective if he's to play that Tom Lynch (Ade) transition link role. It wasn't any accident that he came into the game once midfield found its mojo in the 2nd half.

With regards to LOB hopefully other choices will soon return from injury.

I think your assessment of Honey is spot on.

Not sure I love the midfield of Hewett, Cripps, Curnow and Cerra.... Just a little same same, really need the likes of a Walsh, Fish or Doch to chop out from time to time to inject a player that spreads from the contest nicely.
I have less of an issue with our personnel/talent/sameness than I do about the method when it comes stoppages. Too many sides simply plonk their midfielders dead in front of ours and shield them from access to the ball. By doing this:
  • They take our players run and access to/at the ball. Did you notice how many frees we gave away at stoppages trying to gain access to the ball?
  • Deny our mids space while creating space for their own to not only gain exclusive access to the ball, but waltz away unimpeded from the contest. Gold Coast are another side that implement this well against us as did the 'Orrible Hawks in their day and they were as slow as treacle. I mean watching Goldstein, who is 2957 years old, just amble out of a centre square stoppage unimpeded for 25-30m because their mids created enough space for him to do so does raise some questions.
  • If by some chance we did win the ball our mids were shut down quickly, because there was no one providing a shepherd, block or taking an opponent's run.
Given we have the reigning Brownlow Medalist, to say we lack genuine midfield craft sounds ridiculous, but we do. Until we develop a genuine plan about how we go about our midfield work and a method to execute we will remain a middling side around the fringes of the eight.

The one thing I did find heartening was that Voss mentioned our midfield issues and the way we finished the game at the presser.

Good thoughtful post LemmingMaster

I would have loved to see him come on and be a great player …. He was a pick 10 ffs so none of us want to see such a high pick wasted.

With regret after yesterday’s effort, unless we have a swathe of injuries, I just don’t see him in the side again. Yesterday was his chance and simply put he blew it. To be fair he did one or two ok things but he was ridiculously bad in the first half every time he touched the ball or was near the play. Couldn’t do a thing right, was like watching a train wreck.

It was obvious yesterday that players were avoiding passing to him due to his early efforts as they had no confidence in his ability to contribute successfully.

I’m not trying to bash the guy here as I’d give two pints of blood for him to have had an awesome game yesterday but I think yesterday was his last chance and he blew it.

It's true that we csn't get the best read with a few best players out.
We can read that we aren't our best without them, which means our depth of replacement is lacking, or we aren't picking replacements wisely.
I was shattered by ourc1st half of play as many others were too. Half time commentary backed up everything we were worried about.
Credit to the team for turning it around.
When Crippa was asked about it, he didn't confirm it was Vossy who led that.
So Sherlocking a bit, I can imagine that Prez or similar had a word and/or Captains had some suggestions....Vossy said " we felt we were playing a bit safe and needed to add some flair."
I hope 2nd half is what Vossy is hoping for but am sure 1st half style was a directive and not just a result if ' midfield issues'.

The lifted arm isn't being paid anymore. Zurhaar lifted his arm like he was asking his third grade teacher to go to the toilet.

On SM-F926B using BigFooty.com mobile app
If it wasn’t a free to Zurhaar, then it should have been a holding the ball free to us…

Footy gods evened it up the kicked a goal from the next play…

I don't think a player has to be bad to be dropped if we have a better replacement. Good position to be in.

I don't think Owies comes back in. Walsh will replace honey and we will revert to having a resting mid play high half forward like last year.
A little stiff, he was probably our best performed small prior to injury & was building alongside Durdin & Motlop.
I'd have Fish or JSOS out of the forwardline ahead of him & push Kennedy forward, interchanging Cripps, balances out a bit better IMO.

HF Kennedy Charlie Motlop
FF Owies Harry Durdin

Yes agree on Cottrell. Hard runner and puts on pressure. Solid role player. We need runners!!!

Any chance we can make Cotters a run with/enforcer type player ?

Thinking he could be the stopper we need to put the clamps on Nick Daicos when we play the Filth

Watch the last quarter of last week. Fisher arguably went in hardest.
He is not beyond critique but it’s reasonable to show examples of where he shines. Inconsistent would be the term I’d use.
