Its not the fact that we lost. Its how we lost. Top 4-6 teams don’t get belted by 10 goals
19 and 27 May 1995 probably made a few people think about what lay ahead. BTW, I didn't think at beginning of year we'd be top 4 at end of year. Not that we shouldn't aim for that. Aim at the moment is top 8...

Actually, a lot of people have been concerned with Voss since mid last year when his lack of creativity and conservative approach started to reveal itself. Think there was more tolerance bc he’d only had the one preseason.
I didn't like our choice of coach at the time(it is what it is now), but still hopeful that Voss might learn and utilize more of our playing list. Our form has been mostly underwhelming since about half way through 2022.
There's still plenty of time, but it's going to require some thinking out of the square to compete with the teams we are about to face.

I'm looking forward to it.

i agree and I was hoping the preseason just gone would have fixed some of our issues that came to light second half of 2022.

id like to know what we practiced during trainings since.

I’d also like to know how we review the games and what sort of an action plan comes out of them.

The writing is on the wall we need to rebuild the list on the run, through the draft. This incudes putting up some players with currency for trade, and hope Austin has identified some 2nd and 3rd round specials. Here are some names for you
Mcgovern
De konig
Silvagni
Fisher

These players can be good but we need to change our mix and for all mcgovern's positives, his fitness and age means i would test the market.
The bit that is missing for me is our ground ball work. Our talls mark it - we kick goals. Our talls don't mark it - we don't kick anywhere near enough goals. Amazingly, we don't even look like creating opportunities when the ball hits the ground. We don't get free from our opponent, there is no blocking going on, we're just one dimensional it seems.

I'd like to see Fish/Owies/Honey/Durdin and Motlop be able to be 'released' goal side from their opponents but AFTER working out how to get to the big guys feet. Time and time again this season I've seen our big blokes bring the ball to ground and the opposition whisk the ball away resulting in at least a scoring opportunity. It's the turn overs out of our back 50 that seems (without looking at stats) to hurt us badly.

We need a system that doesn't just rely on two Coleman medalists to be freakish. Without those two, not even sure we'd kick anything approaching a decent score.

Everyone slotting Plow and Weiters.....

Games are won or lost in the midfield. As it was last night (noted, some poor defensive efforts too).

Our centre square work has gone from being #1 in the comp. to #18.....

Same cattle.

Gotta get your hands on the pill, first and foremost, to even begin to have a chance of winning.

Then comes smart ball use, leg speed etc.

Our mids went missing last night - again, it looks systemic, so presumably fixable.

Hewett - there's something not right there presently....he's not THAT slow normally.

Up to the leaders to lead now - Cripps, Walsh, Weiters, Harry, Charlie, even Kennedy and Hewett are de facto leaders.....

Is Guv out for a stretch? Saad?

Need a few players dunped too - send a bloody message.....

Last night was unacceptable.
Gov will play next week I reckon. I think they pulled him out as a precaution

We need more goals from the midfield. They are not kicking straight. Cripps has kicked 0-4. Far different than last season

Hopefully Vossy had his eyes opened to a few blokes limitations. I know I did.
I also hope they give Austin free reign to dump some of the duds on the list, including the perennially injured.
Agreed, however we didn't have the skill and manpower in the final third to capitalise.

It was long high bombs to H or Charlie or bust. Our biggest deficiency is method going inside 50 and options aside from the big 2.

More goals from midfield and more goals from forwards not named Charlie or Harry.

If it weren't for those 2 we'd struggle to kick 40 points a game.

Geez the Crows get overrated quickly. They've beaten us (wooppee doo!), Port and Freo...all travelling poorly. Played 4 on the trot at the Adelaide Oval. And now, according to a bunch of commentators, they're world beaters and contenders for the flag.

They're an ordinary side. Have a handful of decent players...but any good side with a semblance of a system (which we don't) should be able to handle them without too much difficulty.
I don’t entirely agree, they can make the 8 and will be hard to beat at AO this year.

What is really annoying is that both these clubs played the same teams in the first 2 rounds:

- Crows lost to GWS away (Kelly and Whitfield both injured in that game!), yet we beat GWS same ground just 2 rounds later (GWS had Kelly and Whitfield too)

- Crows lost to Tigs, at their AO fortress, in Rd 2, the next week after we drew with them. Tigs led by a million at 1/2 time, bolted home by 6 goals in the end.

Squaring this with how we performed last night just does your head in, but no doubt losing backline leader Doch and Gov pre game was a major hurdle. Sam had 25 touches but was way below his best, to be expected of course.

I see this game as a bit of an aberration, still plenty of improvement from our group to come.

Without trying to sound basic it starts with the basics.

We are an extremely low IQ football team. This sits with the coaches. If they can’t instil the basics as a default in these players then there’s no chance.

It’s a lack of discipline that appears to be supported by a lack of consequence.

The easiest thing in the world is to monkey point after a game like last night, there’s going to be a myriad of examples to make. It’d be too easy. But I’m going to. Because from my perspective the below sets the tone for the rest of the match.

Everyone knew prior to the game that Adelaide were going to come hard and early, that the best chance to exploit us was to run and carry, play up-tempo, spread football. Our best chance was to absorb that, create contest and grind them down.

So one of the first entries into our defensive 50 comes a highball to a contest 20m out 3m from the boundary. One of our most experienced players attempts to climb the back of the opposition player to mark the ball, doesn’t mark it as it spills to the front of the contest to be hanballed to the unmarked most dangerous forward in the game for a snapped goal.

How does this happen? How does Saad not kill that ball to the boundary so that we can set-up for a stoppage? You know, like playing to the game plan that you‘d believe was instilled into the players all week?

How?

It was a horrid example to the group of what not to do. There simply has to be consequence for this.

Jake Lever would have torn him to shreds, because in a team that implements and expects standards this simply wasn’t good enough. Unfortunately, it was an example that was followed and repeated for the rest of the night.

But I’d love to sit on the review of tape of the first two minutes and ask the simplest question to gauge the response - Why didn’t we adhere to the basics?

And when the same bullshit answers that obviously come back week after week are expressed when clearly the basics weren’t followed I’d be handing out “you don’t play next week” cards like Oprah hands out cars.
The Hewett 50 came at a shocking stage too - it was no way to kill the momentum they already had!

Yep, there is the problem.right there in the presser. He.was proud that.we didn't let it blow

Did you hear his press conference. He was quite happy apart from the first quarter and last 15 mins. He's not going to be having a go at any player. WEAK.
oh dear god, I can just see what the Saints are going to do to us, might be over at qtr time again

Right from the first bounce Crippa was getting crunched by 2 sometimes 3 Crows players in the middle.Hewett still looked injured and had no go in him.Motop missed out on a couple of free kicks around goals in the first few minutes along with the dissaray in the backline, losing Gov in the warm up,just stunk of it wasn't going to be our day.
Besides the above i just cant fathom why teams like us and Brisbane etc
struggle playing interstate so much? Its been going on for years.
I turned the tv off after the first quarter.
Kudos to the Crows, they performed on their big stage when they needed too.
Saints will steam roll us next week too with their speed if the same team that turned up yesterday rocks up.
Oh an i love Ollie Hollands, digs in all day,not too much phase's him and he's always supporting his team mates at stoppages with a pat on the back,he's a keeper.

We should impose a ban the use of the phrase Top 4 together with Carlton here and now. Proper Top 4 sides do not allow or tolerate what occurred last night.

Voss and his coaching group really need to lead the way now and lay down clear and functional strategies.
It’s a dogs dinner atm and a road to nowhere.
This playing group just doesn’t have it in them naturally to deliver the necessary off their own bat.
A starting point is selection.
It’s 2023 now and somehow we’ve found our way back to Curnow and Plowman.
Draw the line now … it’s got to be over and done with, they can’t help us be what we need to be.
Kemp and Dow are performing in the reserves.
Give them their chance this season, they either take it or we can then comfortably move them on too.
Austin has his work to do at seasons end but in the meantime, Voss and his coaches have to find a way as what’s being served up atm is cannon fodder for any half competent opponent …
