If we were to trade for Oliver and assuming he has some significant baggage as rumoured, my offer would be pick 3 for Oliver with pick 13 coming back to us plus Melbourne pays 300k of his contract.

Picks 3 and 6 is enough for Melbourne to get the deal done for pick 1 and we still hold pick 2 to secure McKercher. Plus we get another KPP in the 1st round.
Eagles and North worked well last year in the super trade, if you add in GCS and Melbournes Freo pick; There’s genuine room to make things happen.
For instance would people be happy here if we dropped back a couple of spots in the draft knowing we walked away with Sanders/Watson and Oliver?

All we have to do is move from 2,3 to 5 and 6?

Melbourne are prepared to trade their most important player at 26 whilst in the middle of a premiership window, and some aren't seeing the issue here?

Good God.

The issue is partly Melbourne too isn't it? There have been red flags about Goodwin since before they won the flag.

Its a high risk/high reward situation but we need to be able to understand the extent of the risk before we can manage it.

Hello again Shinboners.

Anyone know where this Darling talk is coming from? We have an ex mod on our board who has North links and he says the Darling stuff isn't crap. No reason not to take it at face value.

I just don't see either side benefitting from it. He's an undersized tall forward. Larkey does need some help, sure, but Jack Darling?

Conversely he has his flaws but he's a useful and respected senior player, if a bit frustrating. The talk is salary dumping.

Does anyone of you actually want this?

I can guarantee that none of us want this. It's silly season and rumours are going to be thrown around willy nilly. We have our Molotov cocktails at the ready for when something stupid happens, but I don't see this particular silly thing happening
If we are a chance to get Harley Reid within a West Coast salary dump for Darling, then there are probably more people here ready to man the water cannons to deal with you and your molotov cocktails.

No, but not a fan of his

Sure. But when I hear about an isolated rumour regarding North interest in a West Coast has-been, I don't immediately jump to the conclusion that West Coast are looking to get rid of pick 1 in the same deal

Everyone see's the issue.

But it's risk vs reward isn't it?

For every Ben Cousins there's Dustin Martin and Jordan De Goey.
Ben Cousins won his side a flag as well as having an incredible career at a side that had very little interest in his long term welfare. Maybe if they'd done a better job with him they'd have won another flag or two.

Wrong..

For all his off field behavior he's one of the absolute best and most fanatical trainers in the AFL.

He would run rings around anyone at our football club from a fitness, preparation and recovery standpoint.

Part of his bust up and the rumors around Adelaide are him wanting to hook up with Darren Burgess again.

He checked himself out of the hospital early with his foot so he could go on a 10km run.

This is not some Harley Bennell situation.

This is more akin to Wayne Carey - notoriously one of the best trainers ever, that partied just as hard.
lol please, they're not looking to ship him off because he's "too dedicated". He's got some SERIOUS issues that they clearly think outweigh his star power.

I never said that.

My point is, he can simultaneously be one of the best and most professional trainers in the AFL and a party animal.

We should know, we had the best example ever during our last flag tilt.

I’d be happy with darling short term assuming we aren’t giving up anything.

I’ve long suspected that a genuine second kpf would improve us. And getting darling allows less pressure on comben and any young kpf we draft.

I think part of the reason we'd look at Darling is because Comben is going back to replace McKays

Melbourne's desperation to get to the very pointy end of the draft should be a huge tell for our Club.

Little wonder when two top 4 picks were a major catalyst for their 2021 success.

We're sitting on an absolute goldmine with picks 2 and 3 if Band 1 compo comes through.

If we're smart, and I mean Barassi and Pagan type smart, we'll see off all this silliness and take those picks to the Draft.

To pick up 4 top 4 kids accross successive drafts is bordering on insane.

It will set this Club up for the next 10 years.

Swap him for Sheezel Y or N ?

And therein lies the answer to why we should or shouldn’t give up the planet for a single footballer.

Unless he’s a Carey type
Sheezel could be a Carey type.

Dunno about Oliver.

Either way, comben staying fit and healthy and playing plenty of footy in 2024 is surely the goal. Whether back or forward we can’t expect much from him.

Agreed.

League is ****ed if Essendon can get Gresham, McKay, Oliver all in one trade period. Can’t see them as a viable destination

Edmund said on the radio earlier other clubs believe Olivers contract to be one of the largest, if not the largest contract in the league because of it's commercial terms.

He's on around $1m per season at the moment, but has a clause in it to specifically compound the CBA % increases as they come into effect. It's not a common clause, especially on that size deal.

He could be on $1.4m per season for the back half of the 7 years.

I suspect part of this may be Melbourne trying to shed a contract that might have gotten out of control once the AFL finalised the new CBA wage increases.

Happy to agree to disagree on this front.

Also I haven't compared him to Harley Bennell. The comparison that I'd make is Dan Hannebery in his last couple years at Sydney. Dan is one of the most obsessive trainers you will ever meet. Unfortunately he was unable to control his off-field behaviour and his body deteriorated.

Not questioning how hard he works once on the track. That isn't my concern. My concern is his off-field behavior & our clubs inability to manage someone with that baggage.
