Geez Rick you are showing your age. Did you ever bump into Hojuman or Horace buying a bag of nails on a Sunday morning?
Lol those blokes flew past me when I was hitchhiking up the Maroondah Hwy 🙃

Why do you say that?

What's the problem with

Bonar Corr McDonald

Bergman Dawson Fisher

?
Ouch!

It's bad but it doesn't need to be that bad.

At this stage the depth chart would be looking like

B Bergman Corr Goater
HB Scott Dawson Reid/Sheezal

I imagine what we saw in the last game v GC - lot's of run, more emphasis on skills - will be what we go with in the back half in '24.

Big opposition forwards who get fast delivery into their 50 will kill us if we only have Corr and Dawson to cope with them. Hence the need to get a big guy back there is essential - we can try Comben back there but he has to get on the park consistently. I expect the short-term answer will be looking at bigger bodied defenders in the VFL. Not a great outcome but we still have time to look.

As for Lukey Mac I know he has 3 years left on his contract but he just can't be let anywhere near the defensive 50 - at any level of the game.

Looking at last year's trade GWS gave up picks 3, 12 and 40 to get pick 1 so on face value trading 2 and 14 seems about right for pick 1 this year. But, GWS were.taking someone we didn't want so I don't think it's that simple or cheap if we want pick 1 this year. I don't think we would have taken that deal in isolation for pick 1 last year

Backs are a concern. Bigger thing that has been an issue for our team then backs is structural issues on turnover. Backs will get beaten often when the ball comes in fast and low. If we improve team defence up the ground backline will improve even with weaker personal.
Corr hate is slightly unfair. Still has one of the best 1:1 win % in the league. McDonald is playing out of position. He is not lockdown (disposal has been horrendous this year though). Goater and Bergman we are hopeful develop.
Even if we draft Curtin, Sully or Murphy it’s 3 years befor they are playing against the top 2 forward. Honestly Sully and Murphy prob longer then Curtin as they don’t have assets outside of 1:1 unlike Curtin.
This all meaning we will get a mature KPD at some stage for at least a season (team may back Bonar?) until Logue gets back… also I like Dawson and hopeful he has a great year.

Best VFL Key Defender + Haynes + draft - Curtin/Murphy/Dawson

Need to add atleast 2 but likely three KPD during trade draft period.

Having said that, I don’t mind us going small and mobile down back. We’ll lose more one on ones but we should be able to run the ball out of there and get a bit more creative with ball movement out of our back half.

He kicks sideways 20m or long up the line to a contest ...

That's the reason people put too much credit on DE at times as all efficient disposals aren't equal.
Spot on - DE is very limited - there's no degree of difficulty factored in or risk/reward measure.

Don't know the answer but better off letting the Champion Data kids rank the risk-reward from 1-3 or something.

So player has 14 disposals at low risk/low reward - 100% DE; 2 disposals medium risk at 50%; 2 disposals high risk at 0%. Under the current system looks good but actually isn't.

I’d give ruscoe a go - plays the third tall in defence role and has done it well when given the opportunity.
Just got pushed out by Maynard / Murphy
Can play a role for a few years
I haven’t watched enough VFL but in the seniors he was an occasional and underwhelming bit player forward and back. He was never a regular to be pushed out, just never good enough to take a spot. He’s big and not useless but would need to come for free and coaches would have to see how he could step up.

Only if it helps our draft hand and they pay some of his wage (how much they pay in $ depends on how much they give back in draft capital).

No reason not to, if we have salary space.

I would try to get a draft asset as part of the deal but I wouldn't be expecting to get a high pick.
Obviously goes against "getting a high pick" but do you think Haynes + 2024 1st for our 2024 PP 19 would be a possibility? Probably only a 3-5 pick slide for GWS and we get another favoured death ride.

With L-Mac I honestly don't think he's a 1 on 1 defender. I feel like when he's played his best football has been as a defensive winger/sweeper and can also drift down as a spare in defense as well as he actually reads the flight of the ball quite well. He's too slow/not physically strong enough to be an actual defender as he gets beaten on the lead as he's a yard short of pace and also not strong enough to hold his ground or overwhelm his opponent physically so he's always going to get caught out and look in no mans land.
