We should absolutely be on the phone to Jack Payne right now. Already left out of a GF team and I don't think they're adding Doedee to play VFL finals (when fit).

Agreed, but they'd be dumb to get rid of him. Andrews + Doedee + Payne is an elite KPD unit.

I still think Gardiner is a great shout if he's up for relocating.

With what?
No first pick for 2024, maybe future 2025

We have 3 early picks in DGB, Ward and Mackenzie who have yet to really even get started (Wardy has shown a few glimpses) so there is plenty of early picks/talent waiting in the wings.

If we need to be creative and use future selections to get in a star or two, now is the time to get creative.

I love Bailey Smith as a player and I'd be stoked if we did end up getting him, but we'd almost certainly have to trade out an existing midfielder to make room in there (after wheeling out Tom and JOM last year for this exact reason).

Hypothetically if we did land him without moving someone, we would have:

Locks for bulk mid mins:
Newc, Smith, Day

Really should only play mid roles if playing:
Worpel, Amon (wing), Nash, Maginness (become fwd tag?)

Ideal to get some solid mid time to continue development:
Cmac, Cmac (surely not a perma-HFF), Ward (surely not a perma-wing)

Lucky to get sighted at this point:
Hustwaite, Stephens... draftees?
Which part do you disagree with, Strapping Young Lad? I'm not saying I want to push someone out, I just don't think it's ideal to play any more than 6-7 of these in the same team and the others would have to play for Box Hill. Smith is obviously a huge upgrade, of course.

Looks like being a great trade period for the Hawks. Based on these journos today it appears as though we are giving up pick 3 for Bailey Smith and at the same time giving up pick 3 again for Harley Reid. Great bit of work if they can pull it off. Not sure how we ended up with pick 3 twice but I'll take it.

Undrafted players and draft picks are so overrated on this board.

So we are ok with giving pick 3 and a future 1st (likely at top 6 pick) and a young player for Ried. But not pick 3 for Smith.

I mean how many current players in the league would actually be worth pick 3, top 6 pick and a young player. Then how many of those players were actually the no 1 pick?

Would you trade that package now for Jason Horne Francis after a couple years in the system?

It's all happening! But then Smith would be out. Which one is it?
The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive since we're firstly offering F1 for Smith.
But if it helps to believe both involving pick 3 (and you probably should), think of one as a back-up plan if the other fails.

I'll leave it up to you to decide which is the primary plan.

We are not getting Reid without both pick 3 and F1. And we are not getting Smith without at least one of them.

Reid vs Smith in a vacuum is easily Reid

but that's not the question here at all. The question is

Reid vs Smith + Watson/Duursma

(hypothetically of course, assuming both of these are possibilities)
What about Reid and Smith? GC and Geelong's first rounders are up for grabs and l'm still thinking GWS would part with pick 6 with a Haynes trade if they got something back.
Not sure how the Hawks could get it done but if the Hawks could land GC'S 4 or the Cats pick 7 as it sits now it could ramp up the conversations.

Hawks get in Reid, Smith, Haynes and possibly Chol.
