Mates with Darcy Parish

And a Saints supporter 🤪🤪🤪

He once kicked “about 26 goals” in a school game against new outfit Lutheran College, albeit with his underprepared opponents wearing runners instead of boots.

That mega bag contained no behinds with Parish winning “about 100 touches in the middle and bombing it down my throat in the goalsquare”.

Mathieson’s endurance results at the combine weren’t flash but he excelled in the clean hands test and as Turner says: “He’s a natural footballer. He might test average but he doesn’t play average”.

The kid with swagger has excelled at every level he’s played, averaging 25 TAC Cup disposals this year and winning 17 touches and seven clearances in a VFL appearance for Geelong.

Mathieson’s mum represented Australia in cricket while the Saints fan contacted last year’s No. 1 pick and former teammate Paddy McCartin recently for advice.

“Paddy said it’s all pretty cruisy if you work hard enough and you’ll be right and get treated pretty well,” Mathieson said.

time to move on. it didnt work.

we have enough younger talent to come through.
We took him from HBF to midfield, and he was OK there, in a lesser way to Jack Steele, or Brad Crouch, maybe similar to Gresham, but now we have Windhager, Owens, and Bytel and Byrnes looking better, he seems to be injured a lot and not really contributing much.

Gringo's Battlers that could be his team

Delist for sure:

Jones - on 600+ so would be nice to move him on, given his best isn’t quite up to it anyway (see Richmond semi final 2021) and we never see his best. Get a kid in his spot. Opens up no 3 too which would like pretty nice on our Juddhager.

Connelly - hasn’t come on quickly enough at sandy, see how he goes playing some midfield mins but let’s get another gun kid in his spot now we have a seemingly decent recruiting setup.

Tom Highmore - Kicking is not improving after a long go at it. I like him but too many others ahead of him for the rebounding third tall defender.

Other than those guys there’s no one else I’d offload in a hurry.

Campbell is probably in his prime at the moment and provides great, cheap backup. Keep him on.

McKenzie’s Calf looks to have won the war sadly but I think he’s got another year to go.

Bytel would want to take his next afl chance by the horns as it may be his last.

Suddenly list is looking in good shape. Amazing what a great coach can do.. feel sorry for the guys responsible for building it, who copped enormous heat from the media and now it’s chugging along, there’s no ohhhh yeah sorry about all that.. turns out we were wrong. and the media are still crying for Ratten when it’s clear now that he was the problem not the list.

I dont think Dow brings anything that Bytel and even Byrnes dont have.

Brian Taylor said during the game last night that Gubby Allan had been up North for a few days looking at games & players. I wonder who we are interested in up there? Someone earlier mentioned Ben Ainsworth from GCS but I dont think he brings much. The Lions have a dominant VFL team, I wonder if we are looking at someone there Noah Answerth perhaps?

I still think (and hope) Billings can be a solid contributor for us.

We are praising the difference Ross Lyon has made to the current players in the best 22, got to assume that Billings can lift his game also. We haven’t seen what that looks like yet.

At the very least he could be a very strong depth player for us. Just so long as his contract ask is reasonable.

Fair to say Zac’s playing for his career..the fact he isn’t currently playing is a problem for him!
It's a different case with Zac and Dmac as they're proven players. From what l can tell the only guys on the list with questions over their ability are Highmore, Allison and Leo, so you'd expect it starts there.

I hope all our players can get up and going and have a good season - it would be great all round for the club. It would create pressure on spots in the AFL side and have Sandringham up and flying and a chance to do some serious damage in the finals. If you look at the sucessful clubs in recent years they have all had great depth and a strong VFL side. The state of our list has been so poor in recent times we havent had a competitive VFL side for years. Hence the development has been restricted.

As others have mentioned we simply can't keep carrying perenially injured players eg Jones, McKenzie etc. We cant remain in a state of flux with these players, they take up list spots and important salary cap. If they cant get going and play some decent footy we will need to make some tough decisions. Jones has only averaged 14 games per season (Saints), McKenzie averages 10 games per season. Admittedly DMac may have been in and out of the side due to form, but unfortunately it looks like his body is failing in a similiar mode to Hannebery. I dont know what their contract status is but they should be concerned if they expire this year.

The other up side of having fit players in good sides, is it increases their trade value if that's the path the club wants to take.

Agreed but the entire list needs to be available to create that pressure and we just havent been any where near that. For years our injury list has been one of the worst in competition, the club/s simply cant build momentum when this occurs. Some how this needs to be addressed by a review of the fitness and medical teams or culling the perenially injured players or both.

Freo about to go 1-3 today I reckon, look to be the big struggler of the year so far compared to expectations. Only just ran over the top of West Coast last week who had about 4 senior players injured on game day and were left with no rotations. Now to face Adelaide at home who looked pretty good last week.

And to top it off, traded out their first round pick this year. I will enjoy watching this space this year...

I believe Jones and DMac contract finishes this year. Would delist them if they cannot come back and play very good footy.
Even though Alison has one more year, if be cant come back and show the club something i would pay him out.

If we could get a second rounder for Billings I would be happy. If TC was happy just to be back up, I'd be happy to keep him. Tom Highmore. I don't know I just remember his first and he was good, and I don't understand what happened

Highmore, Connelly and Allison - delist

McKenzie’s body possibly not up to it - rookie, find him new home or delist.

Jones’ body and mind not up to it - rookie or delist.

Coffield, Bytel and Billings maybe struggle to get opportunities and therefore after more game time - consider trade but I’d prefer to keep as depth.
