Wasn’t the rumour that Harley Reid told west coast he’d go home. I think west coast has essentially ruled him out so pick 1/2 didn’t matter to either north or west coast.

West Coast won’t take him and North won’t miss him.

With the Camma/Hayes down back thing. I don’t mind it but I think it’s gotta be Camma, Hayes is pretty slow from memory defenders need at least some closing speed. Wilkie, Camma and Battle might be undersized but they’re all scrappy and have great hands.
If west coast pass on Reid because of that - then they are beyond stupid.

Even holding him for a year gets them better offers from Melbourne clubs than trading down.

Can’t pretend I know them yet.

Tend to do my draft analysis after trade time when I know confidently what we are playing with.

Saves me falling in love with LDU and watch him slowly but surely go from around our pick to the pointy end of the draft
Only know them from twomeys form guide. But at least 1 first round draft mid plus another high pick on a defender instead of hoping a pick in the 60s comes along would be a pretty positive outcome.

Fair enough.

I still think we have a chance at the suns pick if we clear enough dead wood.

Old positions in footy are irrelevant now. Half forwards play as extra wings. Those two attacking half back flanks move right up into the midfield and even your KPFs have to be able to move up the ground to provide transition options.

Yes, but no. The High Half Forwards have to be able to get forward quickly and so generally do not run as deep defensively.
Ideally as you win the ball you want to have a chain of players to move the ball quickly. So each needs to run to different spots.

But yes HHF, Wings and HBs all run much more distance that they used to.

A player like Wood varies how much he pushes forward depending on the state of the game.

Keep Coffield if he gets his body right, he’s a genuinely good player. Also rate Highmore and if anyone thinks Jimmy Webster is better than both of them you are SRS delusional

Webster plays a different role than Highmore, or Coffield. He mainly takes smalls forwards and normally the best small forward, but is also ok on mediums and some talls. He has good pace and is also very good defensively in spoiling .

So I must be delusional then in thinking that Webster goes ok on small forwards, whereas both Coffield and Highmore would be given a bath by small forwards.

F/S is dwarfed by Academies, but I love it A Diacos, Silvagni, a Burke, Harvey or Reiwoldt should be running around at the club their father did

I'd prefer a system that doesn't keep us down through the accident of past players' inability to sire sons. For any level of success to be reliant on past players having sons (rather than daughters) is illogical on any level.

And by the way, if the Riewoldt boys (who are the football, the AFL is Lucy and the St Kilda Football Club is Charlie Brown) play for another team, it would have no effect on my mood or my love for my football club. I'd rather the system was fair for everyone.

Bulldogs, Lions sniff around luckless Saint Nick Coffield

A second club – the Western Bulldogs – has expressed interest in hard-luck St Kilda defender Nick Coffield, one of a number of Saints whose future is in limbo.

Brisbane also inquired about the out-of-contract Coffield, the No.8 pick in the 2017 draft who has not played at AFL level since 2021 due to an ACL setback and then persistent calf issues.

The 23-year-old made it back for four VFL games late in the season, averaging 23 disposals, six marks and eight rebound 50s, and is one of a number of out-of-contract players on the Bulldogs’ radar, including promising Lion Kai Lohmann.

Rivals believe fellow Saints Hunter Clark and the contracted Jack Billings (2025) and Dougal Howard (2024) are also attainable. St Kilda are keen to invest in the draft, but none of this group is likely to score them a high-end selection.

Billings – who coach Ross Lyon views as a forward only – has mild interest elsewhere and would ideally like to move on after playing only three senior games this season, but key defender Howard seems more likely to stay.

Zak Jones, Jimmy Webster, Daniel McKenzie, Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes are also without a deal beyond this year. Restricted free agent Jade Gresham’s future is also uncertain, particularly given it is highly unlikely the Saints would receive first-round compensation for him.

Gresham has been linked to Essendon for some time, and The Age confirmed on Monday they are in the hunt for the talented forward. He is keen to play for a big club, according to sources familiar with his intentions.

Got a few options with pick 12 in the draft;

1. Ollie Murphy-if we want a KP, will take time to develop though, due to a slight frame.
2. Caleb Windsor-wing- might end up the most talented in this draft class.
3. Darcy Wilson-goalkicking speedy midfielder/forward
4. James Leake- Clever & athletic utility

Smokies for 1st pick, on a needs basis & maybe with 2nd pick;

1. Harry De Mattia- 184cm Burst speedy mid.
2. Lance Collard- dynamic medium forward.
3. Charlie Edwards- 190cm Burst speedy mid.

Later Picks;

1. Jack Callinan- small midfield/forward
2. Lachie Charleson- small midfield/forward

NGA & Sandy Dragons;

1. Josh Docking-mid.
2. Will Nish-mid.
3. Harvey Johnstone-wing
4. Tarkyn O'Leary-small forward, played a few games for the Zebs & was lively.

Twomey has dropped his September draft.
Looking through it this morning, and discounting our #1 by all the academy and F/S picks, I think it ends up being #18 or thereabouts.
Very unimpressive options thereabouts for our needs.
Maybe DiMattia, who is a few picks lower.
Given the majority of his list this year are defenders, did anyone kick a goal in 2023?

Demattia is a great option or Windsor or Wilson if they drift out a bit further than he thinks. There will be some good players around that mark. He's guessing outside the top 10 or so usually. There is always a few surprises.

This year is turning out to be the biggest Flamingo migration in history with birds coming from all corners of the globe to pluck this trade period within an inch of its life .
With that being said get too it pink necks and may the best bird win

Watch them play, they are just wingmen these days, true wingmen are hybrid HBF/wings. Not just us either, every side in footy has the same set up.

Wood would be having to be a much more defence focussed player sometimes depending on his direct opponent. Like after 2021 Langdon never gets as much time and space because coaches have made him play on a player rather than run free, Wood is probably having to play on someone some weeks. When he's left free he moves all over the ground. No point dragging your player inside attacking 50 and block up your own space.

No luck recently with developing tall defenders. Clavarino now Adams.

Talls we've taken in the national draft recently:

2022 #31: Van Es
2022 #44: Keeler
2021 #51: Adams
2020 #26: Allison
2020 #45: Highmore
2019
2018 #4: King
2017 #35: Clavarino
2016 #39: Battle
2015
2014 #1: McCartin
2014 #21: Goddard
2013
2012 #25: White
2012 #75: Pierce
2011 #60: Lever
2011 #68: Maister

2 hits out of 14 taken, with 2 of those still pending.

**** taking talls in the draft, you can't pick enough of them to let the law of averages work in your favour.

Van Es will be on notice too!
I think it will all come down to self belief for big Van Es, he doesn't have the confidence yet. He is physically ready, huge frame and massive leap. We really need him to come on

He just turned 19 in his first year. We can be harsh on these kids at times. Jack Payne for Brisbane is a good example of reward for patience. Having a breakout season in his 6th season. Battled for years with form and injuries.
