Yes but we still got him after 40.

Motlop doesn't look amazing so far anyway. Think the lack of speed holds him back a little.
No I'm talking about Owens. He was matched before 40+. It was still 20+ in 2021 with Motlop the only exception because he was "metro indignenous" or some shit like that.

I stand corrected. In my head he went at 40+.
Went pick 27 from memory.
I agree with you he’s not a player that would add much more to our smalls than the guys we already have.

I’d love to see us take a risk on Ashton Moir if he’s available. He’s got obvious talent that would fit well amongst our predominantly honest battler but limited forward line. Back the coaches in to get the best out of him.

I forgot we held an early second round pick this year, so maybe the draft isn't quite as irrelevant for us as I thought. So here's my top 30 for anyone interested...

I still have a lot of questions over this draft. Particularly around the KPPs - other than Jed Walter. I think it'll really open up once the picks are into the teens, which is probably good for us considering where our picks are.

One good thing is that I don't think it's a great draft for West Coast to be rebuilding in. I'm really not sure what I'd do if I was them. Maybe aim for Edwards and Curtin as talls, I wouldn't drop too far though - the next tier of WA guys probably aren't the types that you build a team around.

For us? I'd love Jack Delean as a genuine x factor small forward. I'd steal Lance Collard from West Coast too, although I do rank him higher than most. Riley Hardeman, Kolsytn Tholstrup and Clay Hall will all likely be around that mark too. And I wouldn't rule out Ashton Moir being available either.

I agree with you Chris that Jack Delean seems like a perfect fit for us and one of the few that I thought got front and centre to kick goals but also did run down tackles and took marks (and kicked goals) on a lead. If he was there at our early second round pick then he would be very high on my list, but I expect him to be gone before then. I previously mentioned Collard but I think watching him a bit more that he would take a lot of time and I think he would suffer from our approach with small forwards. I am still keen on Hardeman as well as another outside runner with some skill by foot and Sanchez is a handy half forward as players around our first.

I agree with you that Moir has some super talent no doubt, but I would be nervous about taking him based upon what he has said in some of the publicly available interviews; and if he rings alarm bells for me then I think he will do so with a number of recruiters. Same to a lesser extent with Tholstrup; I could almost buy it with Tholstrup if he is there at our second pick but I think again he could be crucified in a team that values players meeting training standards.

With the early pick, West Coast should probably do the most obvious thing; bid on Walters (whom I reckon is the best in this year's class - I would take him first if he was free market and I think he is an Eagles fan as well?) and then take Reid and play him as a HBF before graduating to the midfield over time. More importantly they need to clean out the list of players that don't train well and meet performance standards (they may need to do it in two batches) and they need to draft a layer of players that will commit to meeting standards off the field. Which probably means they shouldn't go players like Tholstrup (or Moir), even if it fits their modus operandi, because it will mean a longer drought. I think Edwards and Curtin will fall in no man's space for them, and I am not sure that Curtin is the key back that they are looking for anyway. Demattia, Sanders (if either are still there) and Hardeman would fit well with what they need as well in the early second round. I think they can get Livingstone (I don't think he will be taken before 40) but is he too similar to Jack Williams? They are probably better searching for a "true" ruck with a late/rookie pick.

West Coast already have a few Swan Districts "almost" players on their list. Trew, Bazzo, Hewitt. Hardeman is a good kid, terrific runner and looks good on the three or four occasions he gets loose for a trot down the paddock, but has limited impact on the contest.

Specialist half back flankers, for mine, need something special. Hardeman can mark, is a decent kick, is athletic - but special?

That said, we'll probably pick him now I have damned the poor bugger with faint praise. Mark Duffield is a good judge of footy cattle and he rates Hardeman.

I personally like Koen Sanchez. He's a terrific runner, good by foot both sides, finds the goals - doesn't have size but definitely has speed and skills and is, of course, fresh off the East Fremantle Assembly Line of Champions.

He'll be thereabouts for us and I say yes.

I stand corrected. In my head he went at 40+.

Everyone should remember this as another time the AFL looked after their own because Victorian clubs were the reason the NGA came into existence, the Victorian clubs were the reason the bid matching limits were put in place (both for fear of WA/SA Indigenous talent coming through AND securing their own with top picks) and the Victorian clubs were the last ones to feel that restriction come into effect.

St Kilda landed an elite talent matching a bid in a draft pick range we weren't able to access our own in.

It was probably a trade-off for us having access to metro NGA's after 40

It was, it was also offered by the WA/SA clubs as a compromise for including the metro Indigenous young men with the country Indigenous young men - which was requested by the local elders for the benefits it was giving.

Even looks a little like Balla. 😜
I certainly miss the niggle Crowley and Balla dished out.
We really don’t have anyone that is
Feisty or a pest.

There’s no NGAs from freo this year I assume in the range? What about next year?

I think it entirely depends on whether someone can ensure Mitch Edwards both has blisters on his feet for the combine AND still completes the athletic testing. Should he test quite poorly for speed and endurance he will slip.

It would make our draft plans quite interesting if we were to have available a keyforward/ruck like Edwards with a pick post #39 (because we currently hold pick #40 and wouldn't be selecting our own academy player with it if we can just get them for free matching the very next bid.

Do we like N Watson a bit more now? Would you spend pick #7 to pick the shortest player on our list?

He is a very good small (171cm) forward; I still wouldn't spend a top 5 pick but 7 is probably okay. Gets a lot of his goals from marks on a lead rather than front and centre but is still good in that role when the opportunity presents.

Still think Delean with a pick around 20 would be better value than Nick Watson with a pick around 10.

Got to go with Moir.

Most of our forwards are small though, we need the Zurhaar type to bully oppo backs.
Sounds like Emmett is that type? Problem is Sonny has two years if we are lucky.
Switta doesn’t hit the scoreboard and Shultz is the only offensive/defensive
Small forward.
They have tried Banfield, Fyfe, Sturt, and still we are no closer who to play.
