Noticed Hamish's article stated we could move up or back

Wonder if North pull the bolter, Tauru at 2, we might look to trade back to 6 and gain future capital, draft Draper 6

My guess is if we stay at 4 we go Langford, if we trade up we go Jagga, if we trade down we go Draper
Would only be if Richmond really, really wants Langford. Sounds like they’d be happy with either him or Smillie

The ‘best player available’ line is such an overused cliche. If the best player available to us at 4 on draft night was KPF or KPD, you’re saying we take them over a mid?
I think needs should play a part if the available players are close in talent. But if the players aren't close, you should trade up or down to get in the right range for the player type you need.

Generally, if you take best available at the higher picks and go for needs at the back end of picks, you should be fairly balanced for type. Trade where it gets too out of whack. You can then go best available again next time around.

North are a good example of having focused on mids and now have an imbalance to address. Ideally they could trade down to get in the right range, but looks tough this year.

We didn't reach for mids, but took them late and traded for more (our 3 best mids), but can now take best available with our talls locked in.

Labelling players as "potential whipping boys" before they're even drafted?

Never change, Big Footy.
It's such an Adelaide thing to do ......this time last year people could only dream of Draper .....just do a search to confirm the discourse

With Draper, concentrate to what he can do, not what he can't .....personally, I feel, after coming back from some injuries, it would be expected Drapers skills would not be razor sharp

I'm not worried about Draper in the slightest

With you on this one

Clearly has more pro’s than con’s, and frankly I think his most popular con is not exactly a ‘con’, just average

Is also mitigated by being more handball-prone, where he is more often accurate

Jeffcrowe have a listen to this well respected podcaster, Dylan Alexander .....just talks needs all thru the video

Does he mentioned kangas need a key back at pick 2 or a key forward at pick 2 to support Larkey ?

Goes both ways

Edit - Actually just listened and enjoyed that , goes too show there could be a few surprises still Tomoz . The manages pick is a classic talent v needs pick so will be interesting to see how it goes re Tauru v FOS

I'll guarantee you ....Clubs will magically find players in this Draft that will meet their needs .....spooky that, if what you were saying was true

Just hark back to the Gallucci v English Draft discussion .....did the Crows select on talent, or the need for speed with Gallucci
Hopefully Nicks doesn't interfere with the list manager/recruiting team like Don Pyke did on that occasion.....WCE not all enarmored with Pyke again sticking his beak in and trading out their pick 3 this year either.

Probably a bit of Fagan/Gibbs about it - ‘get a deal done or else’ re: Baker - once the Hawks traded that pick to Carlton, their hands were tied by their own CEO

Are we able to draft a player in the upcoming mid season draft? Or are we still out of list spots? Surely there should be some gems missing out this draft?
If we have a player with a LTI I'm sure we can.

If we have a player who suffers a season-ending injury then we can put them on the Inactive List. This then allows us to make a selection in the MSD - much as we did when we picked Turray after putting Sloane on the Inactive List this year.

History says that the likelihood of having at least one season-ending injury before the MSD is high to very-high.

Further to my previous reply...

Schedule 4 Section 11 of the AFL and AFLW Collective Bargaining Agreement details the Termination Payment payable to delisted players. Players who had one or more years to run on their existing contract (i.e. Burgess & Schoenberg) are entitled to the base payment for each year following the year in which the AFL Player was delisted (i.e. their 2025 base payments), plus "a further number of Match Payments in respect of the AFL Competition calculated at the rate applicable to the relevant competition in which the AFL Player last played".

Section 28.22 of the Australian Football League Rules (23 February 2024) states that:

There are other clauses which modify this if they're added to another Club's list (via any mechanism) - but that's what happens if they don't end up on an AFL Club's list. What you suggest is simply not possible.
We should be able to afford to pay someone like Burgess this year. Someone like Smith would be on too much.

Can we sack next season before the mid-season draft & pick up a player? Surely this would be an option for Strachan if he can't still run out a game.

I think it’s more a case of, when clubs are picking their talent order, sometimes if there is a glaring need on the list, there’s an element of bias that comes into play
... when there isn't much between the players.

Same with home state factor.

But need to pick player you clearly think is more talented than the next available.

I'm sure it was just badly worded, but it sounded like Haggis said we will have two picks AND have enough points to add Welsh as well.

That's certainly how it's worded on the AFC.com.au article:

“We will probably use two picks, (and) we’ve got enough points out the back to hopefully cover and bring Tyler (Welsh) in as well,” Ogilvie said.

That's certainly not how I understood the state of play. Unless he's literally referring to a rookie upgrade as "using a pick".

You have been extremely patient! At this stage, why don't you stop repeating yourself for the nth time and put your feet up? ;)
No because there’s still important unanswered questions like can we split our pick and take Dodson, welsh and someone else.

We'd wet our pants with excitement
