Opinion 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 & 2, from 7pm AEST

People were adamant all year that 3 tall forwards don't work yet draft picks that suggest we're moving away from that are the end of the world? It's strange.

Granted, I'll admit I haven't followed much at all.

My main concern (outside of playing three talls in the forward line) is that the cupboard is bare IRT developing KPFs.

Unless you count Hamling I suppose...

Looking at his highlights he gives me Hayward vibes and also that Brisbane kid that killed us in the first qtr of the Grand Final.

He might be a really nice pick in hindsight. Yes, we need talls. But we also need some decent FWD depth as we basically had nobody in the 2's other than Wicks!

I'll say what I said in 2022 when we neglected to get any talls, I'm sure the smaller forward we got will be good, but it's just mind boggling strategy.

Failure to address needs with the first and then gone a very speculative medium fwd when several others are much more proven.

Still, I'm sure highlights reels will get some memberships, if not premierships.

I still highly rated Sheldrick, he just needs to stay fit.
Roberts is a similar range to the picks from tonight.
Not many players drafted after Logan are going better from the 2020 draft.
Rowbottom was also a mid 20's pick in 2018.
Tom McCartin early 30's.

These were two picks in the 20's not early firsts, and our recruiters and staff have done a brilliant job developing a list that can get to grand finals... Just that last part isn't there (and it's not for talent).

From all records Dattoli is a competitive beast and hard trainer, I look forward to him carving out a great career with the Swans.

I don't know Ned Bowman, but hell I am getting behind these two boys and supporting them.

Only Sheldrick of the ones you listed were first round

Meanwhile we have our great Dean Towers picks lol

It isn't though. Smart recruiting wins premierships.
Really?
So your assumption is they haven't recruited smart is based on your emotions with literally no understanding or appreciation of their list plan for 3-5 years down the track.

Cause let's be honest. You don't have a flying clue what the swans list will look like in 2027.

They do.

What if McCartin gets a concussion next year and misses 2 months (which happened a few years ago)?

Who comes into the side? We will have Melican as our number 1 key defender and what else? Will Longmire have Rampe play tall, something he could do 8 years ago but can't do now? Will he bring in another key defender, and if so who?

We did address two needs- I got my small forward and you got your medium lol

Alright then. McCartin gets injured next year. What happens next?

Ned was 30 in Twomey’s rankings.

Why is everyone melting that he was a reach?

Personally, I’m quite pleased with our selections - we’ve been whinging all year about not having a pressure small forward and a Lohmann-style exciting medium forward.

We could have just found both.
He wasn't anywhere near his rankings, nor most all year, until he obviously got some late mail.

If we didn't already have a bunch of small forward options and had gone a medium with a much better record, then sure.

Because everyone is convinced our current crop of KP forwards can't take us all the way.

I get this, and you have to draft one eventually, but was any key forward we drafted now going to make a huge difference in our immediate window? To me it doesn't sound like any were rated highly enough to be at particularly high odds to offer more than our current 3 in the next 2-3 years.

Granted you could point to Morris at the Lions but outside of his involvement in the GF drubbing he was just as impotent as our key forwards throughout the finals.

The 89 ranking was from Champion Data's ratings rather than the Phantom Draft. I know we bag CD a bit but it doesn't give a lot of confidence that he's actually a star.

More crucially while I think our small forward group could be better it wasn't the reason why the 2024 GF happened.
Champion Data says it all.
Might as well as have used his potential SuperCoach score.

No draftee tonight will change the grand final result.
