The comp obviously needs a lot more time to develop, and I’ve broadly enjoyed the finals series.

But a GF with one goal across the second and third quarters after some of the low scoring games we had across the season is a difficult sell.

Kudos to north though, have been clearly the best team all season and look home and hosed now.

It comes down to two things. 1: the quality of the umpiring. They let far too much go which results in a scrap. Pay the frees and watch the game open up

Secondly - what can't really be controlled - the evenness of the quality in players.
The majority are of a similar pace, with similar skills, so it's much more difficult to break a game open with 1 or 2 big moments.
This is a problem in most women's sport, and not exclusively an AFLW problem

Completely agree with point one. I’ve only been to a few games this season but the umpiring has been atrocious every time. It confuses the players and supporters, and hinders the ball movement.

I can’t say I agree with the second point. I agree that there are more “average” AFLW players as they haven’t had the benefit of proper youth development pathways and professionalism at the highest level to separate themselves, but it feels imo (at least this year) that coaching plays a big part here. Even in the GF a coach has hamstrung his players with his approach - Starcevich has had a nightmare. Not backing your team in is an atrocious way to approach a GF.

I watch a fair bit of WNBA and there is nothing wrong with most of that. There are clear differences and separation between the average players and the stars, and there are a decent amount of the latter.

Hopefully the AFLW improves and it’s just that it’s in its infancy.

I just hate that you can't have a reasoned conversation about the competition. Everything is so polarised.

Like it is possible that the skills have improved massively, but still have a long way to go. Both of those statements can be true.

The comp has to go full time professional and play a full season with full length matches.

It's one of those topics where the supporters are so sensitive that they can't take any sort of criticism and plenty of people that don't watch the game just come on and say how terrible it is.

Skills and fundamentals 100% need to improve (a huge amount of players can't handball properly) but the game improves year on year and the top teams play a pretty good brand of football.

Perhaps increasing the capped hours of the players and increasing salaries for support coaches would help. Assistant coaches earn a pittance compared to the amount of work they must put it.
