AFLW 2024 AFLW season - Geelong & the greater league...

There is a lot to like about that game. Geelong clearly the better side, north had everything go their way. 2 x disallowed goals, twice the ball bounced directly on its point when it was heading through for a goal. No love at all from the umps. Would have been travesty if we lost that game.

It only needs a few things to turn and we will be right in this season. Midfield was dominant, defence was very solid.

Scheer and kearns back in (and a fit Georgie) would make a big difference.

Keep the faith, we are a very dangerous team.

Agreed.

To fight back from 3 goals down against a team that has always had our measure and just took the reigning premiers to the cleaners was great to see.

I thought we were the more dominant team, but North had the experience and with that the ability to execute more efficiently when they had the chance.

Anna-Rose Kennedy showed at times that should could be a great addition to our defence. Played a similar role to what Rankin has over the years and already looks like an upgrade.

Featherstone’s best game for the club. Building her confidence nicely in a role that while she seems undersized for, gives her the chance to compete and stay involved.

Love the competitive nature of the 2 Moloneys. Darcy can get distracted when things don’t go her way, but when she’s focused that drive and will to win is a great asset.
Aishling on the other doesn’t drop her head when things aren’t working and pushes through to get better and make a difference. Key factor we got back in the match was her turnaround performance in the 2nd half.

The ruck spot is still a major concern. Darby is a fantastic competitor but more suited to a 2nd ruck/forward role. Pierce can’t get a look in even though she’s our only bona fide ruck doesn’t bode well.

Hopefully get Kearns back this week, and I would like to see what Pierce can offer the team.

Don’t forget Scheer.

With the territory advantage we had yesterday, if we had another dangerous forward it would have made a massive difference.

Our only real weakness is in the ruck, we are betting that our other strength will counteract that weakness.

Gunjaca is stiff - thought she was really important in defence

Surely the clutch goal wins this weeks nomination

Good batch there.

I'm not really across Hawthorn's Gilroy (they'll play a couple of games up here in Cairns over the next couple of seasons I believe, so I will get to know them for better or worse) - but you I haven't seen too many of the W girls slot it from 50 so effortlessly. Impressive.

And I love me some Gemma Houghton action, she is awesome, been one of my favourite W players since she was at Freo.

Bowen has had a rock solid start to 2024, clutch goal and all. Two really solid games.

Opposition Analysis | AFLW Week 3

The key stats to watch as Geelong takes on Carlton at IKON Park this Saturday

The Cats head to IKON Park in Week 3 for a clash with Carlton, searching for their first win of the AFLW season.

Geelong put in a strong performance against the Kangaroos last Sunday, but the two teams could not be separated as the Cats recorded their first points of the year in a draw.

Carlton have split their opening two games, falling to Hawthorn by 38 points in Week 1 before securing their first win of the season in a one point victory over Gold Coast last Sunday.

The Cats and Blues have not faced each other in nearly three years, with the last meeting coming back in round two of the 2022 AFLW season (Season 6).

Geelong: 15th (0-1-1)

Points For
Carlton - 67
Geelong - 76

Points Against

Abbie v Amy: An Electric Midfield Battle

Week 3 will see two of the competition’s top midfielders go head to head, with Geelong’s Amy McDonald and Carlton’s Abbie McKay set to do battle on Saturday.

McKay has made a strong start to the 2024 season, ranking among the AFLW’s top players for disposals (sixth), clearances (fifth) and contested possessions (third).

Amy McDonald has been a dominant force for Geelong in the opening two weeks, rated first in the competition for clearances, while also sitting in the AFLW’s top ten for inside 50’s (second), contested possessions (seventh) and disposals (eighth).

This is set to be an incredible matchup between two players who will have a significant impact in Saturday’s clash.

Nullifying the Blues Handball Heavy Style

Across the opening two weeks, Carlton have shown a desire to link up through handballs and it has proven to be their primary ball movement tactic.

In Week 1, 46% of the Blues disposals were handballs recording +11 more than Hawthorn, and in Week 2 that number rose to 47% while recording +30 more than Gold Coast.

Abbie McKay and Mimi Hill are key drivers of Carlton’s handball game, with McKay first in the competition for handballs and Hill ranked fourth.

Forcing Turnovers

Carlton were very susceptible to turnovers in Week 1, recording 81 turnovers against Hawthorn which was 24 more than their opponent and was a significant contributor to their 38 point loss.

In Week 2 the Blues were able to clean up that area, recording 68 turnovers which was only four more than their opponent and helped them secure their first win of the season.

Geelong have a number of players who can apply plenty of pressure, something they will need to do this week to force Carlton into making mistakes and turning the ball over.

Good luck to Jordan, but didn't realise she was still on a list
I also had to look this up - She was delisted by Melbourne, leader on Collingwoods VFLW list, I think has been part of Geelong's pre-season, was elevated to Collingwoods AFLW list last week, and is now debuting
