AFLW 2024 Awards

May have said it the past few years, but this would now be the best final 3 that we've had. Was looking like it'd be a dull field halfway through the season, but they pulled off some good ones down the stretch.

Having both Houghton and Berry in the final 3 is a bit dumb. Pick one, and then have something different for the 3rd choice rather than another snap from the boundary.

It's an individual award. Not a team award.
Hawthorn had bugger all players in the AA side from 2013-15 despite having the most potential offence and defence
And that has bugger all to do with what I wrote.

I'd only vote for Breed's mark but I think Scholz edges it narrowly in quality. It's a good year based on those 3.

I'd choose Munyard's goal but I'm not sure how far she ran? I agree that all those listed are way too similar.

Surely it has to be Kearns for MOTY and Munyard for GOTY.

All three GOTY contenders were similar shots, but Munyard's included an extra run hugging the boundary line to get past a player as well. And Kearns' mark was the best I've seen in AFLW. Maaaybe Chloe Scheer minutes before doing her ACL in the 2019 GF rivals it.

Edit: No, just went back and watched it and Kearns' was definitely better.

Nnnnah it was a nice jump by Kearns but ultimately a chest mark. Scholz grabbed the ball clean with arms fully stretched overhead, took it out of the air from 4+ metres, much higher degree of difficulty.

Scholz wins mark of the year IMO.
As for the goal of the year, i don't think any of the goals nominated were the best goal I saw this year, but I'd probably go for Munyard.

1. Rebecca Beeson (41 votes)
2. Zarlie Goldsworthy (35)
3. Katherine Smith (31)
=4. Alyce Parker (30)
=4. Eilish O'Dowd (30)
6. Madison Brazendale (26)
7. Tarni Evans (25)
8. Pepa Randall (24)
9. Georgia Garnett (23)
10. Alicia Eva (21)

GWS coaching staff haven't got a clue, and Parker finishing 4th is the extra proof we didn't need.

Huntington 9 games and Srhoj 8 games this year probably makes for a misleading top 10 as well.

Katherine Smith records her highest finish in a B&F count, her previous best being 4th in 2018 for Melbourne.

Lowest club B&F finishes for leading disposal-getters
7th: Molly Eastman (Syd, 2022 S7)
6th: Sarah Hosking (Carl, 2018)
5th: Karen Paxman (Melb, 2022 S6)
5th: Georgia Patrikios (StK, 2022 S7)
4th: Alyce Parker (GWS, 2024)
4th: Olivia Purcell (Melb, 2023)
4th: Madison Prespakis (Carl, 2021)
4th: Emma Swanson (WCE, 2023)

No real theme with the quality of teams there. Some really good, some really bad, some mediocre.

But definitely a theme with a lot of the players there. That is, they hated their coaches and/or their coaches hated them.

Nina Morrison has finished 3rd twice and 2nd once at Geel, but is yet to win one.
2024 Geelong Cats AFLW Best and Fairest Top 10
1. Nina Morrison – 138 votes
2. Aishling Moloney – 98 votes
3. Georgie Prespakis – 74 votes
4. Rebecca Webster – 59 votes
5. Rachel Kearns – 48 votes
6. Jackie Parry – 42 votes
7. Amy McDonald – 40 votes
8. Mikayla Bowen – 38 votes
9. Julia Crockett-Grills – 37 votes
10. Anna-Rose Kennedy – 22 votes

Moloney adds to that group of Irish players with a 2nd place finish.

Although Amy McDonald had quite a run from 2021 to 2023, finishing 1st 1st 1st 3rd, her string of top 5s has been outlasted by Rebecca Webster who has gone 3rd 2nd 4th 5th 4th.

Julia Crockett-Grills recorded her first confirmed top 10 placing since 2020 (it's possible she finished 6th-10th in 2021, but GFC only published a top 5 that year, to my knowledge).

TBF, A Mac missed a few games this year otherwise her run of top five would have continued.

Yeah 4.5 games. The .5 being the 3rd and 4th quarters vs Hawthorn, a game which Geelong led at HT and would have otherwise won.

Applying the same if-not-for-injuries logic, Nina would have just had her 7th straight top 3 finish!

Every year Jas and Ash either take votes off each other or are missed by the Umps altogether. Jas should have a least one B&F, and I think Ash may have just missed out on one as well a few seasons back.

I just had a look, it actually wasn't directly the reason (in the votes) why either one of them beat Ebony Marinoff with the above leaderboard.

There were a couple of matches where

- Riddell got 3 and Garner 1 (Riddell didn't stop Garner from getting 2 votes)

- Garner 2 and Riddell 1 (None of them got 3 votes)

- Garner 3 and Riddell 2. (Garner stopped Riddell from a couple of extra votes).
WOW! You're one of those type of people. Very frustrating talking to people like you who either nitpick or take everything very literal.

It was a generalisation based on about 4 or 5 seasons of football where Jas and Ash have been near the top of the leaderboard each year but either just missed out, or in the case of Jas, have been totally ignored by the Umpires despite being voted the best player by the coaches and players.

A surprisingly close finish here.

Swanson the only player there who was in West Coast's top 10 in their first season (2020).

Drennan has gone 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 5th and 5th to make it 5 top 5 finishes in a row (the first four being at Gold Coast).

AFL.com.au AFLW Player of the Year

24 votes – Ebony Marinoff (Adelaide), Ash Riddell (Kangaroos)
19 votes – Jasmine Garner (Kangaroos), Monique Conti (Richmond)
18 votes – Eliza West (Hawthorn)
15 votes – Charlie Rowbottom (Gold Coast)
13 votes – Georgia Nanscawen (Essendon), Aisling McCarthy (Fremantle), Alyce Parker (GWS Giants), Laura Gardiner (Sydney)

AFL.com.au didn't have McDonald, Molloy and Whitfort in their top 10 last year, and they all finished equal-second (with Riddell) in the official count.

This year I think Nanscawen and McCarthy will wildly exceed votes given by the AFL website, based on the AFLW umpires' time-honoured creed: if in doubt, go with the blonde or long-sleeve-wearer.

I also doubt they can pick out Eliza West, Emily Bates, Mattea Breed and Jasmine Fleming from a lineup, so that could make Hawthorn's votes rather interesting.

Question is whether somebody from that list will win AFLPA Best First Year Player, which hasn't gone to a teenager since 2022 S6 (Rowbottom).

The threat: 26-year-old Eilish O'Dowd, who averaged 15.3 disposals and 16.1 hitouts from 11 games for GWS. Very strong debut season. HOWEVER, clubs can only nominate one player... so the Giants might go with Srhoj, which would throw it wide open.
GWS did in fact go with Srhoj over O'Dowd:

GWS did in fact go with Srhoj over O'Dowd:

I'm surprised North have a nominee this season, none of our rookies got a game this season.
