I would not discount Clark. Things happen when he is on the ball.

Hopefully he can his 2025 fully fit and unhampered fora change.
Have him rotating with Macrae. It'd feel wrong to leave him out of our best 22 considering his strengths

He just needs a full pre-season - praying for it to happen. Increase his disposal average from 19 to 24+ and we have a very impactful contributor

The push to recruit choirboys was an over correction from the nude pic/school girl/dwarf scandals.

People always ignore the fact that 2013 was ground zero in the rebuild which started with a draft of 3 kids they expected to be our future midfield.

2014 was the ‘get your spine sorted’ draft.

It didn’t work out & the guys who made those calls are long gone.

Real question, and something we may need to get our head around..

What do we do if the draft goes like this...

1. RIC - Lalor
2. NM - FOS
3. CAR - Draper
4. ADE - Smith
5. MEL - Langford
6. RIC - Smillie

Because I legitimately don't know, and I would be pretty bitter.
Very good question....

Reckon Reid and Tauru

That would be devastating. Made even worse knowing Melbourne and Carlton managed to snake in.
Reid and allen/hotton and then trash the club for the next 15 years for not trading up.

First we go back to cursing Jack Higgins for a few minutes. Then we get excited watching viking highlights.

Tauru and split pick 8 for Hotton and Hynes imo. Hotton is about on par with the top mids on talent so we'd have to get him if we miss out on the rest

Other option is to trade up to pick 6 with our F1 to guarantee Smillie and get another pick in whether it be 2024 or futures

Kick stuff. Then watch clubs desperately try to trade up. Make the most of it. Perhaps take slide back with 7 for a club to take Armstrong (I’m sure they would know or verbally agree). Take Tauru at 8, BPA at 11-ish and who we can get at the free pick.
Or insert Travaglia, Lindsay or your drink of choice. I say Tauru only because in that scenario maybe we at least plug one of the other gaping holes.

A big question with that scenario is why on earth would North Melbourne take another mid when they need to fix the key positions?

This would only really be a worry if they traded their 2 to another club who wanted an elite mid. I don't even know who else has the currency that would make that worthwhile trade. Demons? But that doesn't change anything for us, unless they wanted to use both top ten picks on midfielders, and they slid, their 9 and change up to 2, but I see them more going for a mid and a tall.

Exactly take Tauru, then split the 8 for a couple of teens and go with the best mids there.

This is the one draft where you can pick up real gold class 200 game mids later in the first round and even in the second and third round, even if they are not elite.

I think Lalor or FOS give great flexibility early on with forward half capability. Could easily see them being able to integrate them at AFL level.

Also, because they are the better talent than Tauru / Armstrong.

Again, echo chamber stuff. All our posted thoughts on the matter have assumed North (or someone) go tall because it's in Saints best interest.

I'm here to question that, and I think rightfully so in planning for every circumstance and challenging status quo.

Reid and Lindsey, would be available, but Armstrong and Tauru would both be wanted by Nth, Tigers and Melbourne and regarded as picks in the 5 to 10 range. All three of those clubs have significantly greater need for key position players than mids.

Don’t be surprised if Melbourne try to trade up the draft

I heard a player manager talking about it yesterday
Not sure I see how - they've already spent next year's first so they can't trade future picks and they have picks 5 and 9 in an even draft.

The 2021-2024 draft hitting strategy then free agents and trade in for end of 2025 Sounds like a nice sales pitch. But 2022 is looking like 1 player only from that draft making it.

2022 is the question mark.

Phillipou
Van Es - 31
Hotton - 35 ?
Keeler - 44 ?
Rookie - McLennan (NGA) ?

Hotton is doubtful.
Keeler is possible but he needs to get a wriggle on. McLennan shows promise but is still uncertain.

We need two of Hotton, Keeler and McLennan to make it to stay on track.

If Collard makes it then I think 2023 is a slam dunk with the exception of Bonner who was from the PSD.

Nailing a slam dunk in 2024 might offset the misses in 2022. But this year is a very important draft for the club.

I'd forgotten Keeler was taken in 22, feels like he's been around longer for some reason, in my mind he was already approaching write off territory lol

We all whinge and moan about other clubs getting leg ups for father sons etc, but how lucky were we grabbing Caminiti a couple of seasons ago for zip. If we hadn't of found Hammer we would be having to give up an early pick hunting for a key tall etc, last year or this. Then we collected Windhager, Owens, McLennan as NGA's and are looking at another possible 3 players this year.

There is no doubt with a more professional admin/club our luck is changing.

If Phillipou is as good a player as we project he will be, the years drafting will be a success. Everything else will be a bonus.
Having said that, I’m bullish on Keeler
