Northern states clubs have pushed back on the AFL’s plans to introduce a mid-season trade period for next year.

But this masthead can reveal Brisbane and GWS Giants are among the clubs who have made it clear to league headquarters they strongly oppose the concept.

Midseason trade period kills the midseason draft IMO.

All it would mean is clubs like us lose players mid year rather than just at the end of the year, and Victorian clubs swap players amongst themselves.

There would be nothing positive about a midseason trade period or any NSW or QLD team.

I have never sent corro to the Lions before (eg sending an email to the club on a particular issue), but will be for this. I think this could be an absolute disaster for the four Northern clubs and will make it that much more difficult to win a flag. This will only largely benefit the VFL clubs for the reasons stated in that article (and others). Also a bit of a double whammy with the AFL also stripping back our ability to draft homegrown talent.

I’d suggest you write to the swans if you’re as concerned. It’s an absolute dogshit idea.

Player A goes down for the season. Club needs to pickup a ruck but you've only got 1 list spot.

Previously the club would go to the MSD and take the best ruck running around in the lower leagues. Now the club will go after the ruck who is not getting game time somewhere else.

Or the ruck they pick up is an excellent player in an average team.

And if he has 2 options. Is the ruck going to move interstate or is he going to go a club that is 5 minutes down the road?

The link to Harry Perryman as a "watch" is interesting

EDIT: Clip from show

Has 5 year offer from the Giants, but is more likely to go than to stay
