Am I the only one who thinks the media are going absolutely nuts this year even more so then previous?

Morris has been repeatably embarrassed with going hard at stories that have either no truth to them (Marshall) or are so preliminary that they wouldn't normally get off the ground (the Merrett story). It seems obvious to me he's got a chip on his shoulder about the club and is actively trying to dig up any sort of dirt possible.

Discussion around our compensation pick being obviously approached from a vindictive point of view and not really logically. Barrett being a two faced slimeball saying we dont deserve pick 8, Ralph Clarke pushing a questioning narrative as if we dont etc..

Dustin Martin moving to the Gold Coast. Theres been absolutely no inkling of word from Martin or anyone else involved that this was ever a serious consideration yet theres been a massive amount of coverage and discussion based on a rumour.

Huge amount of discussion about Melbourne and all the upset thats really not been elaborated on or even really commented on by the club themselves but the media are reporting that everything is on fire and Petracca/Oliver are leaving then not leaving etc.. I just dont buy that either player is that fed up or that the issues are that bad as to be legitimately seeking trades that would be nearly impossible to actually make happen.

Trade talk/gettable etc.. is just chock full of the absolute vaguest rumours that seem to be purely based on player management inquiries rather then any serious discussions and are then parroted across all the other media people until they start to gain legs.

The discussion of late around academies/FS has been highly disingenuous with a lot of people in the media purposely ignoring obvious points and very emotively defending the status quo based on personal interests.

I could go on for another hour listing out shit but basically its doing my head in. I enjoy reading/listening to AFL related media like everyone else but the general lack of integrity amongst nearly everyone in the general media community is become really dire. This is a mild rant for sure but its legitimately harming our game in my opinion.
US sports have been this way for years, the NRL is sunilar too, albeit both those sports effectively have an all year open trade window.

I suspect the media machine is just upping to report on more and more managers bullshit

Looking at it objectively, we’re an easy target for a variety of reasons probably made worse with how Rat’s departure and RTB’s arrival was dealt with, we’ve also underperformed this year with a younger core finding their feet, then the saga with Taryn probably didn’t help affairs either.

Personally, I think some of it gets overblown but that’s just the reality with the media landscape and some of the fan base who’ve become disillusioned.

Not gonna pretend I'm an expert on the media industry but it does seem like it's had a fairly significant amount of upheaval this year so maybe these guys are trying to pull stories out of thin air to justify their jobs?
Media today is about engagement and clicks for ads.

Add in that this nation on the whole has some of the most trash news companies in the world (News corp, Fairfax, channel 7).

Between us not inviting battle and our presidents comments we have appeared to triggered most of the AFL
Only because it's the saints.

If it was the bombers or filth it would be a different story, a story of standing up for what is right.

Yeah its over the top. I used to be excited come trade week but now I'm preeety keen to stay away from the media and just flick to the most liked posts in this thread....or the trade thread.

I stopped engaging in my AFL media ages ago. They are hypocrites and sell their soul for anything. The AFL media has been horrid for a long time. Desperately digging up dirt on players away from the game behind closed doors, putting it on front pages for all to see and then screaming that the players are role models and should think about the kids. Honestly, which kids would see them in a bathroom or a nightclub at 1am without the help of the media! Whores, the lot of them!

Mostly giving up media was the one of the happiest non-Saints AFL days of my life. Along with quitting dream team / supercoach!

the more i think about the more i reckon we probably should just read out the nuke codes when it comes to this on field equalisation bullshit with compromised drafts, free agency and the salary cap not being as clear as it used too.

we have no real point of difference to the other clubs. we have no father sons. we don't have academies producing guns like sydney/gws/gc. we dont have the onfield advantage or corporate likes to make free agency a go like say Geelong/Pies/Tigers/Hawks/Essendon/Carlton. we don't have a glorified state academy like WCE/Freo/Port/Crows where they have a 50% chance to secure any talent coming home, we on the other hand compete with 10 other clubs (see free agency).

so how do we get out of this mess? what strength do we have?

honestly, over the 150 years our biggest strength has been to survive. i don't think other clubs have this quality. in fact i think their position requires the AFL to ensure they have mechanisms to ensure they are always competitive on field, at the detriment of other clubs (see GWS/Sydney/GC/Brisbane). the draft and salary cap is exploited to do this. on one hand they constrain the rich clubs only then to give advantages to the clubs they want to prop up. see COLA. see the northern academies. dont get me started on the rules that are bent for geelong when it came to future trading and the inside info on bowes.

so i think our only path way out of this mess is too literally threaten to blow it all up. try an implement measures that whilst it will hurt us, will hurt the strategy of the AFL more. the easiest way to do that IMO is to just give up on the draft and salary cap and any equalisation measures. just give it open slather. take away the advantages the northern clubs get and see how the AFL react. create instability on the entire comp. it can't be stable for 14/18 of it. it has to be stable for all.

so honestly i'd just threaten to challenge the salary cap and draft in court as restraint of trade. let the rich clubs go back to dominating. the clubs immediately impacted by this will be GWS/GC/Lions/Sydney. we will survive, we'd have no chance at a flag but i don't think we have one now unless things considerably change.

maybe after a period of utter turmoil the AFL will come back to a place of needing serious onfield equalisation similar to the 70s/80s that saw the introduction of both.

What do Melbourne ask for from Geelong in the Oliver trade? By pushing him out they have lost any bargaining power, but I would be still asking Geelong to give up a player plus in the trade eg De Koning, Jake Kolodjashnij, Brad Close.

I noticed after the game while the Bris players were lost in their euphoria, Joe seemed to be one of the first to get around the Sydney boys and shake their hands. Strikes me as that sort of dude.
Interesting guy.
Laconic as hell. Loping around like a baby giraffe.
Chewing his “baccy” when playing. Never overly concerned when he missed those sitters - which was often.
Frustrating as anything to supporters ( and even neutral watchers) at times.
But jeez, his game in the prelim, and then fill in rucking in the Granny.

Got to take your hat off to him.
A very good career and leaving at the top of his game when he clearly could continue.

Add Clarry & Smith to the mix and what could possibly go wrong?

You know if it was one of ours, the headline would have been… “St Kilda player interviewed over “alleged” sex assault”.
