It's just a costume, nothing more. It's neither a smart choice, or a dumb choice. The AFL are only acting on it, because people like you make a big deal out of things like this.

People like me, fmd. My "outrage" as you've called it was at the stupidity of the choice of costume three weeks after all the fines and suspensions given out to the Giants for something similar. And yes, plainly it was a dumb choice as he has been suspended and now has his mug all over the press for reasons he'd rather not. I couldn't give a flying fork what these knobs do in their own time but to suggest this was anything but a poor decision at an AFL function in the current climate (of suspensions) is ludicrous.

I think that if anyone can overcome their limitations through sheer determination to improve, he can. Or even Garcia. They both seem to have a huge hunger to get better.

So I was trying to think. Which players (preferably from other clubs to avoid Saints bias, but whatever) that we thought weren't really tracking to become a good midfielder went on to become one through determination and improvement? Steele is someone already mentioned who really improved from seemingly being just a tagger to having a couple of seasons amongst the top mids in the game. Who else?

While they continue to corrupt the competition, favour their northern vanity projects, do back deals and are completely unaccountable, but think they are the arbitators of societal standards.

I think Elliot Yeo tbh.
Fair enough he’s athletic but it was really his competitiveness that did it.


He was a super competitor who was a tough nut HB and just went in and was a menace on ball.

Some really good calls. I think there's good reason to still hold out hope that Marcus or Garcia will hold their own as quality, ball winning midfielders. It's up to them really. Would be a great help to our future list mgmt decisions.

Truly weird how the Billings/Sinclair story turned out and a really good example as they're a similar size and speed. One had the hunger and determination to keep getting better, and to have a crack wherever he was put.

I think it was even as recently as 2020/21 he was talking about being on the outer and worried about his career. Its really one of the reasons why I cant agree with the way people write off players, theres just too many examples of them coming good eventually.

I think the broader point is whether you personally are offended by it or not its very evident from numerous recent examples that its not socially acceptable anymore and you will be sanctioned for it.

Like it or not, those are the facts, its a dumb choice because the outcome of it is known.

I get it, I’m old by comparison to the players, but seriously it seems so juvenile.

Youve gotta think that from next year on they will do away with dressing up and skits.

Honestly the dressing up thing is juvenile but the skits is even more bizarre to me. Bunch of athletes with a passion for amateur theater.

Their acting practise increases their free kick count. Never forget who the captain of Geelong was for so long. Best actor in the league, statistically most free kicks by a country mile. Skits are good mate!

We're not the target, but realistically; you're at a work function, that work might have international representations to consider and you rock up as a dead terrorist in fancy dress under the brief of "celebrity of the 2000's". Good decision or not?

When you then work with kids and this gets reported, how do you think the parents would act if you came out all "it's just a costume bro, chill"?

It goes deeper than that. People who invest in these flimsy concepts naturally become more defensive about their beliefs, and ego takes control generating it into assertive behaviours which creates a positive feedback loop until the individual or group become completely full of shit. Once headed down that path people remove themselves from differing opinions and cocoon into an echo chamber further entrenching the feedback loop. That's why the best friends are the ones who tell you when you're full of it.

There’s a lot of assumptions in your take but in any event it doesn’t really matter whether you think it hurts no one or not (I’d bet Jarryd Haynes alleged victim didn’t enjoy the dress up the GWS guys did). Let’s call them “distasteful” dress ups got sanctioned pretty hard 3 weeks before this umpire did the exact same thing.

If you’re going to stare an event THAT recent in the eye, knowing full well what the outcome was then, and still do the same thing, you’re an idiot and you’ve made a dumb choice.
