AFL drafts are tricky to get right at the best of times. There are so many players who rise and fall based on the final year of U18s. It's the year where players who might have been out of position to facilitate the previous year's draftees move back into their preferred roles, it's the year where a lot of kids show massive amounts of physical development and the others that developed earlier fall back to the pack. Even with the benefit of that last U18 year there are picks which don't turn out right.Speaking of strange stuff, what on earth happened to Will Phillips?
Outstanding player at the Chargers - alongside Rowell and Anderson if you don't mind - and now looking to be delisted by all accounts.
What on earth happened to this former Pick 3 with such a reportedly high ceiling?
I know he had Glandular Fever, but that should be well and truly behind him surely.
The concensus on the Norf board is that he is unmotivated, unfit and really hasn't had a fair shot under Clarkson - not getting a run of games.
That does sound a bit familiar - Clarkson and his favourites - but delisting the guy seems a bit extreme.
That's the word though.
Not suggesting we pick him up, but this seems a stratospheric fall from grace for a guy touted as a genuine star mid at one point.
Thoughts?
got drafted to North who havent really been able to develop guys. The currant guys like Sheezel and Wardlaw look good but they have had a lot of those guys over the years that just become good role players. They also made the wrong pick, should of taken Logan McDonaldSpeaking of strange stuff, what on earth happened to Will Phillips?

Exactly. And all we have to do is look back 10 years where our squad depth literally gave us the opportunity to win the flag. He’s behind a few IN THIS MOMENT, just like Finn, Watson and others.
There is no need for pragmatism as you call it, because there is no issue.
We are in the mode of collecting talent and adding to the list to build depth, because depth wins flags.
If he’s still playing VFL in 2026 his value will be zero though. It really comes down to whether we think the player that we can get at our first pick will be better than Ward. If yes, then you’d think about trading ward for baz. If no, then you trade our first for baz. He's played less than 50 games of AFL/VFL football, let's just let him improve his craft.
If he's still playing VFL in 2026, then this conversation becomes more valid. If we want to win premierships we need a deep midfield. If he's playing VFL, it's a positive sign for how strong our midfield is becoming. I see this as a positive.
The club knows his value and the potential player he can become.
People forget Shiels Hodge Sewell Lewis Hill Burgoyne Smith Rioli Mitchell and even a young Punky all played in our GF winning side to start our 3 peat and all at some stage could run through the middle for patches.
Anyone worrying that Ward may not break in or be given a chance in the middle need to relax.
I'd say of that list only Shiels, Sewell, Lewis and Mitch were centre square mids during 3 peat. Hodge and Burgoyne mostly half back, Rioli and bruest forwards, and Hill and Smith were specialist wingman.People forget Shiels Hodge Sewell Lewis Hill Burgoyne Smith Rioli Mitchell and even a young Punky all played in our GF winning side to start our 3 peat and all at some stage could run through the middle for patches.

His manager would never let that happen.I had a bad feeling Geelong would be right into Nash as a FA but glad the talks are happening. Good to get them locked in so we can move onto adding to what we have got.

GWS are your stupidly-rich friend - they were given the best of the best; the best education, the best toys, the best access to Centrelink..GWS's list management model has been to retain their top half-dozen or so players at just about any cost - see Coniglio, Whitfield, Taylor, Greene, Kelly etc - and to then pad the list around these pillars. Cameron is really the only one who they weren't able to convince to stay with a blank cheque.
I don't think they'll kick up too much of a fuss about Perryman leaving. They'll consider him replaceable.
As for Perryman himself, he is very much a utility player. I've watched him semi-closely over the years from a fantasy prospect perspective, and he's been played as a half-back, wing, tagger, and a few times as a ball-winning midfielder, and is / was comfortably AFL standard in all of those roles IMO. I'd suggest that Mitch would love that kind of versatility.
Ive watched him play for North a few times... i dont think he's that bad.. here is something to work with. I think North for a long time have had player development issues.AFL drafts are tricky to get right at the best of times. There are so many players who rise and fall based on the final year of U18s. Will is a combination of a kid who was very well developed for his age, despite not being super tall, and a kid who missed pretty much that entire final year of U18s due to the pandemic, and in an overall weak draft.
You'd take him for next to nothing but I don't think there's some vast pool of unearthed potential there.
North happened. They have an ability to improve any players they have.Speaking of strange stuff, what on earth happened to Will Phillips?

Option 1Just following up on this, the benefit of having so much cap space, as we do over the next couple of years, is that we can pay him more initially so it doesn’t kill us down the line.
If we signed him for 6 years averaging $800k, totals around $4.8m. We would likely knock half off in the first 2 years.
We then have a very good player in his peak on an average salary for 4 years while we’re competing to win flags.
Getting Perryman and/or Battle on $800k each will not stop us from signing other players in any way, I have no idea why anyone would be against signing immediate improvements to our team for nothing.
I agree with you, but are we doing the right thing by the lad? If we get Baz it only compounds the situation. Let alone Phillips (just saying).
The Ward situation is a big List Management issue.
I've heard that too.
Tricky trade to value with all the baggage he carries. Could MFC get a first and future first?
How bad would things have to get at Melbourne that even Oliver wants outImpossible to evaluate at this point in time. Imagine the coverage if he does request a trade.
